How much does the Lego Store mark up the set to at your location?
I'll have to look, but when they had the SW sale on May 4th, the Shuttle was priced at $290. This is Hawaii; most stuff in physical stores are marked up.

Yeah, this is why I agree with those who say it'll be back next October.
I hope so but not going to take chances. Aren't there rare pieces in the decor that would be inefficient to hold in inventory just for Halloween?

Not that I can tell. I think most pieces are rather common in it. It is just the volume of green pieces that is rare I think. Someone else will know.

I've been designing my own modular in LDD based on the Medieval Market Village. Even with sourcing pieces from Log Cabin, Seaside House, and whatever loose bricks I already have, I still need to Bricklink a considerable amount of pieces.

This hobby is expensive.
very nice, and tell me about it, buying the pieces for the millennium falcon. ;))

Anyone have architecture sets? Looking at the following and would like impressions:
-farnsworth house
- falling water
- villa savoye

They're on sale at the moment on amazon so not as overpriced as they usually are.

Holy crap - I've been watching an auction for the Minecraft set on the NZ equivalent of ebay and it's just sold for $160NZD, against the rather high NZP RRP of $59.99. And a few hours ago I got my shipping notification for the two sets I'm buying :)

how does amazon ship the really large sets like tower bridge or the death star? I hope not like walmart where they just put shipping labels on to the original box.

well I got my tower bridge properly packed from amazon (EU)
first time round the box was however seriously damaged, they exchanged it without any hassle though!

It really annoys me when amazon lies about prices. This is something I've seen becoming only more common recently.

Just one of many examples you can find is LEGO City set 4203: Excavator Transport.

Pricing claim:
List Price: $59.99
Price: $36.65 Eligible for free shipping with Amazon Prime.
You Save: $23.34 (39%)

Pricing reality:
List price is $39.99 pretty much everywhere.

I am of course only talking about products sold and shipped directly from amazon themselves, not a third party.

To a seasoned LEGO fan it's easy to spot these false claims because you can pretty much tell what the MSRP of a set *should* be based on the piece count, license of the set and by the number of strange/large/unique pieces in the box. Still irritates me.

My lord. I'm sorry, my American brethren, but USPS is such a piece of shit when it comes to international shipping. I ordered the B-Wing off eBay from a lovely seller who promptly posted it that same day, but it's still bloody processing 4 days later! It hurts.

USPS can be misleading. I sell a lot of camera equipment on eBay and use USPS Priority Mail and occasionally it will be delivered while the tracking app still says processing. It's by far the least accurate of FedEx, UPS, USPS, etc.

However, they seem to a better job not smashing boxes than the others.

I have a 7 month old daughter and I am so fucking excited to buy Lego for her when she is older. Do they make girl Lego?

They have the Friends range which is more designed towards girls, with an emphasis on role play. but of course your daughter may grow up to like all sorts - mine is getting either the Dino set or Ninjago dragon for christmas :)

Yup. It's nice that LEGO have a range specifically aimed at young girls, but I think it's a little bit narrow-minded and patronising. My nine-year-old loves the "proper" LEGO sets, and is happily collecting the Dino range (along with individual horses from Bricklink, natch ;-) )

It may be a while before she can safely play with the Friends line, but in the meantime you could get her some Duplo sets. I have a 2 year old girl who has fun with her Duplo (they even have Disney Princess ones) and it is perfect training wheels for Lego when she is old enough. :)

...not to mention that her Duplo should be interoperable with any LEGO she gets when she's older (unlike, say Mega-Bloks et al).

All the sets you list are usually pretty fairly priced in the PPB ratio. Also, it looks like Amazon has the wrong MSRP on Vila Savoy on their site, because the one store I have seen the set in always has it for $70.

EDIT: Crap, forgot you are UK. Not sure what the mark up is on these sets are then.

Nicoga and a few others have Fallingwater, and in general that is an extremely well regarded set. Farnsworth House is kind of middle of the road for me. I bought it, and in the end it didnt look as cool as it did on the box. There are quite a few neat micro scale interior details that you cannot see on the box, and I really liked those. Also, if you want TONS of white 1x1 and 2x2 tiles for MOCs, then Farnsworth is a steal. Vila Savoy is too new. I am tempted by it, as it looks like a really neat build to put together.

If you are wanting to go super crazy, Robie House is well liked (Nicoga loved it from what I remember, but he also got it for a great price). And the White House set is a very nice set. The only issue some on here had with White House is the sheer number of 1x1 plates that you stack together and getting them lined up right. But the set itself is really cool looking when done. And also much larger than I anticipated based on the box.

If you, and anyone else on here, have not tried any Friends sets yet, you should. The few I picked up have some really neat details and flourishes to them, and also come with lots of great pieces for MOCing with. They are great gateway sets for girls (and it seems your girl doesnt need a gateway set, but still) and are not dumbed down in any way. They are proper Lego sets that just happen to feature pastel colors.

Fallingwater is the main one I'm interested in. I'd also like to try and build it in minecraft, and having a real model to reference would be useful. I already built a farnsworth-like building which was fun. Price is £56 instead of £74, so 25% off.

I jut popped onto rebrickable and according to them, I'm only missing 23 pieces from my collection to make fallingwater, so might try that first

I also just got the brick Friday letter from lego - 10% off if you spend £100 (plus 5% VIP points), and the nice Christmas set.

Look closer at the instructions for Fallingwater. If you are only missing 23 pieces, you may have them in different colors and could be able to hide them inside the main structure of the building. The Architecture sets never use off color pieces for markers like Star Wars and other sets do, so you may be able to cheat your way to already having the pieces.

Hm. Perhaps I'm being a bit unfair on them?

HA! :-D

Leaving aside the great mash-up, the detail on those *is* nice. Perhaps it's just the pastels and the iffy character designs that I find offputting.

Will put it on the post-Christmas list for us to investigate further :-)

If you haven't tried them then I would agree.

I was staunchly opposed to the line when it first made its way onto shelves-I found it patronizing and sexist. After hypocritically building a few sets with my 5 (now 6) year old I can say I was totally wrong.

The sets are really well designed for the most part, the colors are FANTASTIC and there are a ton of cool accessories. My main complaints are that I don't like the doll figures and the sets rely too heavily on stickers.

All that having been said, my daughter never plays with her Friends stuff. Ever since getting the Vampyre Castle, she only plays with the MF line. She is still drawn into the Friends packaging and branding though...

The pastels are part of what makes it cool to me. It is the only way to get some of those colors and some mini fig accessories. I now have a full beauty salon worth of mini figure parts, along with things to stock kitchens with.

Get the $20-$30 sets like I got. The Beauty Shop is cool, but the Ice Cream Parlor set (think its called Sweet Shop or something) is just a blast to put together. I want to get the Heartlake Vet and Olivia's House sets though, as they look fun and have lots of pieces I want for MOCs.

Yeah. I figured as much. She is definitely getting some of those big ones first. Though I may be more excited about this than her. Lol

I'm actually going to miss Ninjago - my son's interest in it was the catalyst that brought me back to LEGO after decades away. The sets, especially those from Year 1 (and some of the upcoming ones as well) are some of my favorites, with the asian-inspired architecture, the dragons and the skeleton opponents. I thought the theme lost its way in Year 2, with far too many generic vehicles, but at least the abbreviated Year 3 seems to be going back its roots a bit.

Playing with the 2 assembled bags of vampyre castle and the swamp thing set on my desk kept me sane during my all-nighter yesterday. I found a green lego board lying around that's getting turned into swampland. The medieval market village/mill village raid combo town is totally becoming Lord Dracula's collection of oppressed villagers.

If I can only buy two of The Zombies, Dr. Frankenstein, and whatever the oldest, dying winter village set is, which two should I buy?

Ah, man. Well, I guess that's good to know, but redundant tracking is a bit annoying. Hopefully it's on its way.

Thank you. I needed that. :) still going to wait for black Friday deals since what you have said points to 10% off. Which is a better deal.

EDIT: Wait, are the cargo holds just a few pieces, or do you actually build the textured side of it? If it is the latter, then I am sold!

DOUBLE EDIT: I just peaked at the instructions online. Is it sad that the way you build the containers is what sold me on it? Well, I dont like the stickers, but the way it is built is just so awesome. Sadly, all I could think of was "I want those parts for a modular MOC!" But the trains I can see keeping together.

The sides of the containers? Yeah, they are brick-built not moulded.

EDIT: you already figured that out

Alright, I have a really tough one for all of you.

If I could pick ONLY one of the following sets to get, which would it be?

Shuttle Expedition
Maersk Train
VW Camper Van

All three are coming up on two years old. All three are close in price. All three are extremely well regarded sets.

Of the three, which one would be the most highly suggested and why?

With the caveat that I haven't built any of these sets and I have never been very interested in the camper van, Shuttle Expedition would be my personal choice. How many more space shuttle sets do you think LEGO is going to make? Maybe a classic call-back like the van sometime in the far future, sure, but that's probably it.

I have built both the 'Shuttle Expedition' and 'VW Camper Van' and I loved the Van only a bit more. Here is my photos of the van from last time I posted 'em...

I would say Maersk, because trains tend to go up in price quickly once OOP, the Shuttle is a reissue of an almost-duplicate so that will affect OOP price, and I'm far more partial to minifigure-scale sets.

I would not go into the 'Train' series of LEGO yet. It may drag me down a bottomless hole of meters of train tracks bought along with boxes of Power Functions. Then you turn your eye to the other train sets that are OOP...
