So yesterday I got back into LEGO (other than messing with my huge collection when I'm at my parent's house for Christmas). I couldn't help go to Toys R Us yesterday and since I'm a grad student strapped for cash I had to limit myself a bit.
I ended up with:
5766 Log Cabin which was great to put together (except for the tree) and to go with it:
4435 Car and Caravan. This was a fun little modular build (one bag per vehicle) that goes great with the log cabin.
I would love to add the lighthouse next to this at some point, but I'll have to wait for taxes.

Was buying some things in Walmart yesterday when I decided to swing down near the toy aisle and was promptly presented with a Lego display. I couldn't resist. I purchased the Naboo Fighter ornament thing and 2 packages from the Minifigures line. Oh man, was I excited.
To concur with someone way up there, micro/mini scale is sooooo cool. This Naboo Fighter is amazing.

i was cleaning out the basement and found my two boxes of lego. I took them up to my apartment and fiddled a bit with it. Just the sound of my hands searching for pieces made me shiver, so many memories. I ended up spending about 6 hours building a pretty bad assed drop ship.
Anyways. This is clearly something ive been missing in my life. I love lego. And its really something i want to do more of. I cant think of a single thing i can do freely uninterrupted for 6h. Im not interested in kits, i only care about free builds. And mostly sci fi inspired stuff.
but I noticed my lego collection actually lacks single row standard pieces. so im wondering is their any set which you get loads of those.
Maybe i should just go for the second hand stuff by the kilo.

The best thing I can tell you/show you for this.
1) Go to peeron.com and type in the name/set number of any set.
2) On the parts list, scroll down to a brick and select the part number.
3) A list comes up with the sets that contain that piece in that color and how many of them.
Or, go to bricklink.com and bulk order (which is easy to do through peeron.com as well)
Example below!
I searched Fire Brigade and go the parts list. From there, I clicked on the 1x4 brick.

You can see all the sets that have that part on the left (and in what color/quantity).
On the right, there is a link to bricklink.com stores. Say you need a boatload of them in green. You can see that Cincinnati Bricks has over 101+ bricks at $0.09/piece. Click on that price to be taken to that store on bricklink and you can place an order.
If you know what you want, this is the best way to do it. Otherwise, browse bricklink stores for parts and buy whatever you want. Making a wants list helps find the best prices for all the pieces and quantities you want, too.
E: When it gets time to make the new Lego topic, I'm going to come up with some Google docs with tutorials on how to use bricklink, peeron, and brickset efficiently. I think it'd be for the best to make it known to all users (old and newcomers alike) on how to optimize their Lego experience, haha.
Yeah, whoops, totally was confused when people just said shuttle, my bad. Imperial Shuttle at 99 would be freaking ridiculous.

Man, I cannot decide between the Millenium Falcon, Imperial Shuttle or the Tantive IV. The Falcon is the cheapest, the Tantive is already OOP and the Shuttle is the largest and will probably be OOP soon. They all have their pros so it's making the decision difficult. $250 is crazy expensive though.

It does look pretty similar though. Same white box (just no "9V" sticker) and same light piece. I think my set was some sort of white spaceship. Has at least a half dozen of those little 1x2 lights...

If you pick only one, I would go with Imperial Shuttle. It is just damn sexy looking (in pics at least. Still waiting for mine to be delivered). BUT the Tantive IV is OOP now, and the prices will only go up. The Falcon I would wait on because you have at least another year or so before it goes OOP, and it is easier to find coupons and deals at places for regular sets.

Yeah, by rails I meant those pieces with the metal lining. They look like regular white pieces but when you flip them over you can see they have silver fillings...(kinda like your teeth might have). I think sound was controlled by the volume-knob piece. Really damn annoying, but the lights bit was cool. Snkfanatic

Hah I remember having a light and sounds ambulance as a kid and felt like it was the best and most badass lego kit ever. Even took it to school and got it taken away for a day cause I kept making it do the noise.

All these space set pictures made me hunt for my favorite mid-90s sets. Damn, they still look cool and had terrific value (most were <$20). I have to build them again.

No problem. It is a tough call, but it is a no brainer to wait on the Falcon, as that will be around the longest and will be easiest to find for a while.

Hell yeah, Spyrius! I had all of those sets. The two big robots were some of the most badass space sets ever, especially the big guy with the detachable head and arms.

It's not a theme. That's like saying your favorite food is "Asian". Harry Potter, City, Star Wars -- those are themes. System, Technic, etc. are more like overarching categories. System contained tons of themes itself.

Yep, AFAIK System is the name of, well, the system. ie, the type of brick used to build the models, just like technics is it's own system.

After building Olivia's Treehouse with my daughter, it is obvious that Lego did not pass the Friend's line off to the "B" team. I really enjoyed the build. It is 100% Lego quality in both design and function. I take back what I said earlier. I will absolutely be buying more of these sets and I will look forward to building each and every one them.
People should build one of these sets before bashing them. They really are great.

Seems most LEGO fans haven't gotten bent out of shape about them like some have, whether they buy them or not. Exception being that there is a lot of hate for the decision not to go with traditional minifigs.

My wife has been wanting to get one of our walls in our house rendered for years, I kept saying no as I don't think it needs doing and it's a waste of money. She hit me up about it again last night and I told her she can do it if she buys me the modular pet store and she happily agreed

Ha. That is me and yes, recently, someone else here on Gaf made the exact same observation; it was the first I'd heard of the guy.
Anyway, much thanks for the recommendations from everyone! I was thinking about the mini-modular set, but thought that it might contain a bit too many 1-brick pieces. I'll look into it again. As for Pick-a-Brick, I'm in Australia, so I don't even know if such a store exists. Lame as. Us Aussies get shafted with Lego.
