Probably used ldraw or something simiular. It's like an autocad for Lego Blocks.

Well, I don't want to oversell it, and I realize now that my sleep deprived brain has confused "hydraulic" and "pneumatic", I just like the routing and control. The basic idea is the power stuff can run the gears in front/back, or it can crank a pneumatic pump. You select that via these controls:



The red handle to the right then chooses to send the pressure to the front or the back. You can place the crane on either front or back (that and the winch are swapable). The crane then has three valves to control what gets pressure (one of two parts of the arm, or the gripping hand). It all works quite well:

From what I have read they use "MLCAD"

And as far as parts go, the cheapest and most fun way is to buy/use previous sets, but if you want efficiency then you have to buy each piece individual on ebay / bricklink :O

Also, I totally agree that the excavator is the best of those. A really nice set. I don't actually like the crane that much (I think the newer crane truck (8258) is better), but the bulldozer is kind of fun.

I also really like the 4x4 off roader (8466) largely because it was the first technic set I ever did (never did one as a kid), and I like the working gear shift that actually has an effect on the speed the pistons move as the wheels turn.
 
Christ. This thread is torture. Why do I click? I want to spend all my money on these mega sets. I complain too much about it. I really just need to sit down and build one afternoon.

I was just talking to the guy at the LEGO store at lunch about this set. He had to build it for the store display. He said it was a lot of fun and took him a couple nights to complete. It's pricey though but it has a ton of pieces.

I visited the the link you gave and the builder says that building instructions might be released within a year. I've been a long-time LEGO fan, but I haven't bought any sets since the late 90s. Building this thing will be one of my future goals if the instructions are ever released. Hopefully I will be able to bump this thread in a couple of years.
 
I wonder if the upcoming DC Superheroes set would include advanced ones (you know, kits that have age rating going to 14 or 16).
 
do you have train tracks and/or a motor for the Maersk? If not, do the millenium falcon and go and buy the power functions stuff to make the train RC. If yes, do the Maersk just because I want to see what it looks like - the box is so lush.

So, went to the other Westfield. It's about the size as Stratford, sale area was a bit rubbish as it was mostly party stuff and some Hero Factory. Staff were OK (or so I thought....).

The PAB wall was very good, got some nice parts. Sadly they had wheels but no tires, still grabed some for engines or greebles though. Right dark red wings but no left wings.......

Still, it seemed better than Stratford in a way maybe because it was my first trip there?

The down side was when it came to paying. I got one large cup and one smal. The small was when I was running out of time so didn't stack but just went for small pieces so the lid fitted no problem. The large one I stacked though so the lid was about 1cm off fitting on one side and just about touching on the other side. The clerk told me I had to remove some bricks.....

I removed a layer of 2x4's and he told me I had to remove another layer. He wanted the lid to close 100%. I know it's fair enough but in all I have read, talked or seen at or about the PAB wall I've never heard of this kind of behaviour.

Oh well, onto the spoils.

I couldn't resist digging up and building some of my old sets after all this Lego talk. Still a lot of fun and a perfect thing to do while listening to some podcasts. A bit annoyed that my younger self had hid pieces in the wrong boxes and not managed to put stickers on straight, but it turned out pretty good anyways.

I keep eyeing Falling Water, but I can't help to think that the architecture sets are less enjoyable than a city or creator type set. To those of you who have built some of the bigger architecture sets and the Shuttle Expedition or Camper Van, which did you find more fun to build?
 
Really want to get the Millennium Falcon. We still have a bunch of Slave 1's at work too and I need one of those. Perfect ships to have side by side :P

So with the success of the recent Minecraft LEGO set on Cuusoo (a website developed by LEGO to develop Fan based sets) I thought I'd submit a custom lego batmobile I built back in 2008 when I came out of my dark ages.

I built custom instructions for the set using MLCAD (a LEGO CAD program) as well as making a camo version painted using vinyl dye.

Please check out my submission for it on cuusoo's website here and if you think it's worthy and would like to see it possibly come an official set, please vote for it.

To be clear licensed sets are permitted under their terms and conditions, if the set successfully reaches 10 000 votes LEGO will take care of licensing deals.

I've built both the Expedition and Fallingwater and while I prefer the shuttle model I think I had more fun building Fallingwater. It's nice to build something that is composed of mainly normal parts rather than relying on tons of specialty bricks like the shuttle. This is one of the reasons I'm looking forward to doing the Super Star Destroyer.

Also those LEGO tumblers are awesome, will vote for them!

EDIT: Tried to sign into that LEGO site but it doesn't work, the M/D/Y fields are messed up.

That happened to me at first when I clicked sign-in with Facebook. When I went back to the main page and tried to sign up again it the DOB fields worked properly.

I can not speak to the camper, but I loved the Space Shuttle Expedition set.

The modular building theme has already proven itself to be very popular. Why not take that idea and explore new directions? The Western theme would be perfect, with its varied designs and false-front buildings

man, fuck this thread. I've been trying to hold off, but couldn't resist anymore. Stopped after work to pick up the new X-Wing, but it was sold out. Of course I ended up walking out with a $100 pirate ship....First LEGO build in about 15 years, should be fun as I always loved the pirate stuff when I was little. I really wanted the Imperial Flagship, but that one seems to be OOP? so I guess this will suffice for now. After this I'll probably pick up either some of the Architecture sets or Modular ones since they look pretty cool on display.

Almost grabbed the Black Pearl today too. Local wal mart had a bunch of them clearanced for $75. But decided to save up for either the x-wing or tie fighter instead.

Digital issues of Brick Journal are available at the publisher's site for $3 or so (as well as hard copies for more), as I recall. I've picked up an issue here and there - it's much better for the photos than the writing, which is often kinda amateurish. The most recent issue has steampunk stuff people have done, much of which looks pretty badass.

I was digging through my old bins tonight trying to make my own TIE interceptor, but I am missing so many things that my nephews pillaged over the years. And I don't have enough matching pieces to do both sides of wings. Was fun trying to build something again.
