The LEGO Thread

Thank-you for posting this. Watching everyone else go batshit insane in this thread by dumping everything out together I was starting to feel bad about myself as a person for always taking the easy route! LOL

You know what, the Tantive IV is the first in a long time for me where I have mixed the bags up and I may yet regret it but it does make the build more fun or at least more like it used to be.

I was thinking of testing these the next time I go to the store.

Oh Christ, what have you done

Time to go get a shitload of Roman Warriors to sell for massive profits huahahaha

Not really, that's a dick move. But since my TRU has the mini fig bags tucked away down the Lego aisle I can totally go get the ones from Series 5 I want without getting funky looks for looking at the package bumps, hahahaha

sort time must go up exponentially as you add pieces. A small creator set, sure. But a 1,000-2,000 piece set? Screw that. I'd be spending hours just on the first few steps, hearing nothing but 'that sound you get when swooshing your hand through a loose pile of lego'. Would drive me insane.

The only time that this is frustrating is when the first few steps happen to call for a piece that the set only includes like, 3 of (amongst 2000+ pieces). That's about when you want to blow your brains out, haha.

Yeah untill you are convinced they forgot to put it in.

And then you find it.

Or when you have to have a certain piece which you have already seen five times earlier... but somehow when you need it you cannot find it.

quoted again, cause it fits :)

There's absolutely no way I could sort pieces before I do a build. Half the fun is digging and finding the pieces.

See I'm in the middle, no way in hell I would dump all the bags together, but there's also no way I'd spend the time to sort the pieces out before I do a build

What I did for Fire Brigade was open the first bag I needed a piece for and dumped it, and then as I needed more pieces from bags, I dumped those. After about the first 4 sets of instructions, I had everything from the '2' bags dumped into a bin for digging.

If I get another set, I'll probably dump everything together, even if it is 2000+ pieces.

When I built Tower Bridge, I dumped the bags into a few different containers based off of style of piece. It still took me days to build. :) Make the challenge whatever you want it to be, haha.

God I can't even begin to tell you how much truth is in this post.

you guys are all crazy mixing up the bags like that, I find it hard enough to find time to put together a set as it is without making the process last longer.

It is not the easy route in my mind. It is the logical route. I stopped mixing the bags when I was 10 or so when I realized that the pieces come bagged with similar things together. I never looked back because it just made sense to keep things separated.

But I NEVER sort my pieces first. I dump out the bags, but keep a pile on the table for each bag. That way I still have this satisfaction:

but without spending what feels like an hour just to get the feeling.

To me, dumping individual piles of bags with no further sorting is the happy medium. I get some fairly decent organization in there, but still a bit of controlled chaos.

This is how I do it (for the most part). It makes sense to me and keeps the build flowing well.

My sorting scheme is really complicated. First, I take only the bags of the step I am on. After, I take the bags of large pieces and dump them on the table. Then, I take the bags of the small pieces, and dump them in a bowl.

Now, you might not have been able to have followed that, but it works wonders for me.

Snagged the Volkswagen Camper Van yesterday, and I've spent a few hours on it this far (just finished the interior and the red portion of the body up to the windows). Definitely the most complex and challenging set I've ever assembled, but it's been fun.

I'll post pics when I'm done.

yeah, even when not numbered, there is a kind of logic to how lego sorts pieces. Similar colour and size are kept apart to avoid confusion etc.

As you start off, you're learning the bags and what is where - still plenty of fishing to do across multiple bags. But as the bags slowly start to empty you build up a mental picture of where each piece is, so you get faster and faster at finding a partiular brick. That has a certain satisfaction too.

I prefer doing it this way rather than dumping everything together. The big sets take a long time already.

I picked up the Fire Brigade and Winter Post Office yesterday to take advantage of the double points. I finished the bag 1s last night on the Fire Brigade. I must say this set is truly awesome. The detail they put inside are very impressive. I think this is the biggest build I've ever done. Here are some progress pics. I know you guys say sorting takes the fun out of it but hell that still took me over an hour to do itself.

The more I've heard about this set the more tempted I am to pick it up. Definitely not a set I was interested in upon initially seeing or hearing about it, and it's pretty far from my core LEGO interests, but man, I sure read lots of great stuff about this.

This is one that you really should grab - its a great set and a great display.

Yay my firedepartment has been handed over to the shipping company.
I'm considering to wait with the building till my gf is over for the next weekend so we have something to do together but I'm not sure she will appreciate it as much as I will...
Descisions decisions...

I just tried this to get some Romans to build up a little army. Most of the bags didn't have complete bump codes and of those that did I only got one Roman. Of the 4 others I bought that had partial codes I got 2 Surgeons and 2 Minotaur's :(

You have to feel the bags to figure out what's inside. I only use the bump codes for confirmation.

Do it alone! More for you.

It's the biggest set I've put together as an adult, and you can definitely tell it's for the older set. It's significantly bigger than minifig scale and it will look awesome on display when it's done, and I'm not even a huge VW fan.

The little details like the folding sofa and the engine are pretty cool. And it's definitely taking me longer to assemble than I thought, which is nice when it costs $120.

It's the small things that make sets like this worth it. What's more, it's SO professional and clean looking. I've shown some people and they're at a loss when I tell them it's made out of Lego, ha.

Picked up a handfull of minifigs for my boy while I was out, we've got 4 friggin' mechanics and at least another 4 highland battlers.

LEGO should just label them properly or make the bags with no identifyable marks.

What's the point of Lego masking the identity of the figs? Seems like you guys are wasting your money making these blind purchases.

Can the Millennium Falcon's feet fold up? It didn't look like it would be able to based on the instructions.
No, they don't fold up. They're really tiny though and they don't lift the ship up very high off the floor anyway. You could easily take them off and it wouldn't make too much difference.

So many VIP points about to pour in! I have 185, and I'm going to buy GE and (probably) Shuttle Expedition. That should be me 685 - I may spend enough to put me at 700 so I get myself a nice $35 off my next purchase!

I don't mind the gamble of getting a duplicate, the thought of people in the know plucking anything decent/rare out of the box annoys me, a small choice of the shame shitty characters is no fun at all.

Is that how it works? Are there "rare" minifigs? Sorry I'm new to all this. I would have thought they were all made evenly?
