I wish LEGO would keep away from the licenses for a bit. I feel like Space has sucked because they are trying to differentiate it from Star Wars (though Mars Mission wasn't terrible) and Castle is now suffering due to LotR, despite have just a year and a half of some of the best Castle sets in decades.

LEGO's license-free themes are usually way better. I like Dino better than the Jurassic Park sets and Pirates better than PotC. I'd rather have something like Agents than the Marvel/DC Superheroes. LEGO is doing too many licenses (really? Prince of Persia?). Needs to concentrate on their core lineup of City, Castle, and Space.

I'd have to guess that the success of Star Wars is the driving force behind this. Being that Lego is aimed a younger demographic, I imagine they try and license sets that are "in" or have potential to take off. LotR is something that I think is targeting the "old" audience (which I think is like, 13+ in TLG's breakdown). Cars is obviously towards the "young" audience.

City gets a LOT of support already, so I would say they're doing pretty good in that respect. Space is the big one, and I think the latest Alien Conquest line was their way of trying something new (again). It did fine, but I think a classic Space redux would do great - a lot of nostalgia would kick in for the AFOL's. :)
 
I am weak... no, I am strong! I was at the LEGO shop today and kinda wanted to buy one of the following: Imperial Shuttle, Millenium Falcon, Shuttle Mission or a heap of smaller stuff. I picked them up one after another, carried them around and put them back again...
But I only walked out with 10 series 6 minifigs and a funny little set I HAD to get :)
I have a bit of money left for spending this month but only because I sold my car last week. It would be a bit strange to think "I sold my car to buy LEGO" ;)

If they bring back the lunar baseplates, they will sell me a set. And, as I've expressed earlier in this thread, I love the Alien Conquest line - the whole 50's sci-fi feeling it has going for it had me hooked.

The Shuttle is the most fun I've ever had building. It may be because it's the biggest and most complicated build I've ever done, but either way, I'm having a blast with it.

I bought the Mini Modulars last week... well, it's easier to justify several smaller purchases instead of some a bigger one, for me at least. And I wouldn't have space to put the shuttle anywhere anyway :(
 
The Western modules project remind me a lot of these old western buildings, not same scale or anything. But even the guns sign compared to the old bank one.

Also funny it seems the most supported projects are the old west and Back to the Future, they fit well enough together.

I give LEGO a lot of crap, but the truth is, it was the Star Wars sets which originally got me back into LEGOs, oh so many years ago. When that first wave of SW sets came out, I bought all of them. I rekindled my my interest in LEGOs, and when the Castle series stopped sucking, I was back in the saddle full time.

But I feel like Star Wars is the exception. Maybe Harry Potter. Most of the other license sets have been half hearted attempts (Spider-Man, Batman, Jurassic Park, Spongebob, Indiana Jones, Prince of Persia, Cars, Toy Story) that last a year or two before being abandoned. I think my biggest fear for Lord of the Rings is that it will be too popular and we'll end up with six years of Weathertop remakes (and no Castle sets).

Feels more like an action theme like Power Miners or Agents than Space.
 
Glad you think so. When I read your post at the top of the page, I indeed thought, "but Star Wars is the exception."

Otherwise, I agree. Why be tied to a licensed IP and water down your creativity? The sets of the late 80s and early 90s were amazing.

Yeah same for me, although I didn't have the cash to buy them all (poor student :P ) I did buy the X-Wing and Landspeeder though.
Then my interest died again and it was the modulars I saw in this thread that rekindled it again... with a vengeance

Agree with you there (Although I think the Dino stuff isn't Jurassic Park)

Again agreed on the first part. I don't consider this Space, it is still earth but with an alien invasion. I don't agree with you on the aliens themselves though..... they have awesome faces haha ;)

Yeah that's pretty spot on. Also I agree that while the Alien Conquest line is pretty rad it does suffer from a few shortcomings that the recent space police theme went through with the goofy character designs for the aliens. At the very least the vehicles from this line aren't quite as goofy, but in the end the only set I ended up buying was the headquarters due to the Vic Viper (which is awesome). I love the set as a whole but the whole line has the "space from an earth perspective" thing going, I want my space sets to take place in space!
 
I'm going to pick up the Dino sets when I can get them for 50% off, just for the dinosaurs, because the sets themselves do nothing for me.

The T-rex alone is going for $25 (plus shipping) on Bricklink.

Got my SSD, Brick Journal Steampunk, 4 Series 6 figures, 2 free TIE's and a large PAB cup.

The staff were superb, they always chat a bit but by now they know me and were really helpful. One of them even helped me with the minifigs. She asked what I was looking for and I explained I was trying to use the bumps to get a robot and a space girl. She dived in and grabbed a handful and stared helping.

She explained the bumps are too much hassle and to do it by feel picking the one part that is unique I got exactly what I wanted and then some. For the robot feel for the square head, for the space girl go for the hair piece. Passed on a minotaur, butcher, celtic warrior guy and numerous Statue of Libertys.

I was cheeky and asked about the free TIE, saying is it one per £50 spent. She said no but popped an extra one in the bag for me.

They had the grab bag someone posted prevoiusly for £6 but it looked like a poor pick form the PAB and less then any organised person would get in the small cup.

Nearly 800 points on my card and going back soon for 8070 PF Super Car.

I estimate the Death Star's base at about 8 inches diameter, so that should be fine. [edit: it's 24 studs across]

I've heard that Lego passed on Doctor Who, because it didn't have 'worldwide appeal'. So the BBC went with the Character Building stuff.

I still have that lying around somewhere. Awesome set. You could blow out the safes of the bank and carriage. I also had the sheriff's set.

There were, but they weren't just based on Jurassic Park. There were sets based on the Spider-Man movie, as well as sets with more generic themes.

Well, to Lego's credit I don't think they're so off the mark on that.
 
Finished the Death Star, and for the first time ever, I have missing pieces. The set has a lot of grey/dark grey/black, so i don't put it past me just using the wrong color at some point, but heck if I'm going to dig for them in the build. So how do you go about ordering new pieces?


As for the set, very impressive. I stand by my earlier comment that it's pretty much a bunch of play sets put together. The number of moving parts and interactive parts is amazing (though I have to say that the center elevator is pretty poorly constructed). I think my favorites were a few that aren't shown in any of the pictures that you can do, like the tractor beam control room, the power core goes down when you pull out the levers, and there's a ledge in the Emperor's camber that collapses like when Vader chucked his lightsaber at Luke. All and all a fun set. The death build I did of mixing everything together might have blown my LEGO fuse for a bit, which is good, and I'm not regretful about doing it that way.

In the end though, I stand by my earlier impressions, the SSD is a better set.

Picked up the mini modulars last night. Thinking of doing 1 a night, just to stretch it out a bit. I also tested out the Bump Codes on the Minifigs, was looking to get 2 Romans, got 2 Romans.

The minis are a great build. If you're going to take your time with them (which is all fine and dandy!), enjoy the excellent micro-scale techniques in all their glory!
 
Fire Brigade should arrive tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest. (Please be tomorrow. I am off Wed and need something to do). What number do I need to look for if I am missing a bag? Was this the set missing bags?

I just do not understand the appeal of the SSD. It's a $400 set that is a giant, gray, symmetrical triangle filled with a bunch of tiny decoration pieces. I guess if you REALLY liked Star Destroyers...

It is Vader's flagship. So it wins by default. It honestly looks like one of the sexist display pieces out there, and narrow enough to fit on many shelves. I look forward to getting it eventually. The repetitive nature of the build does sound meh, but the end results look so amazing.

It's much more a precision build, and a true display piece. The Death Star is a fun build, but it's a clunky looking set.

I really didn't find the SSD repetitive. Maybe because you build everything at once, you don't build one side, then the other side the same way. It all comes together as one piece (exception being the top panels, but those are both very quick builds). The Imperial Shuttle was a much much more repetitive build.
 
I joined the Fire Brigade fun this weekend. I was looking at the boxes in the Lego store trying to figure out where the batch number was when I saw one of the boxes had been crushed a bit. I found the batch number (50R1) and then I asked one of the store employees if I could get something taken off the price for the damaged box. They gave me 10% off!

It was a nice find, but during the build I was missing one piece! A single 1x1 dark grey. I swapped in a 1x1 silver piece so I could easily go back and find it later to replace it. It stinks to be short that one, tiny piece. I also was short a single 1x1 on the mini modulars when I built them a month ago.

I really liked the build and the final set. My only small complaint is the way they want you to hold the firemen's helmets on those hooks (rats, frogs?). They come off at the slightest bump. It was a pain just trying to get all three on at once.
 
The SSD is a sexy looking model, but if they would make a new UCS Star Destroyer I would buy that in an instant. Regular Star Destroyer is cooler looking than an SSD. Yeah, I went there.

Chances are very high that you simply dropped the bastards. I swear that LEGOs teleport when your drop them. A tiny one slips from the table and you find it six weeks later in a different room of the house by stepping on it with bare feet.

Yeah, the Death Star looks too jumbled to be a true display piece. The old Death Star II set was more impressive looking.

And for the SSD, I looked over the instructions and it does look like good fun as it comes together. And yes, the Imperial Shuttle was repetitive as it got to the wings. It was still a fun build.

I have a dog so if it really fell off the table it's probably out in my backyard by now. :) The cost of Lego having to ship me these two small missing pieces can not be helping their bottom line.

I assume Lego determines that they are shipping out the right pieces by checking the weight on the finished boxes (or maybe the bags inside). A single missing 1x1 is probably never going to get caught by their scales.
