Thanks, and yeah - I get comments about it when I visit family, too. Slickwraps has done me well with that - I can slide that thing over any surface and not worry about scratching the aluminum backing.

There was mention of shoddy treatment from FedEx in the thread but I can't find it now. Just wanted to mention about Home Delivery Network.
3 times now they have claimed to have delivered and left a notification and each time the driver is lying as we're in a gated community so vehicles are logged when they come in.
I'll not be using Lego Shop@Home anymore unless delivering to my work address which funnily enough always goes smoothly. The annoying par tis that this was an order in store to save on postage but I couldn't alter the delivery address......
Anyway..... spent the last hour looking at Bricks on the Bay photos on Flickr and it all looks fantastic.

It's 1m for the Orthanc, surrounding structures, ents and huge base. The tower itself is probably significantly less pieces.1 million,
the cost is mind boggling, even if he only payed a cent a piece, that is 10 grand right there...
That said I'd pay $1k for the Orthanc alone.

As a new father, I want my daughter to be interested in LEGO, too. So, I decided to buy her a few sets. My God, they're freaking expensive now. Any suggestions on some affordable stuff that I could introduce to her when she's older? We're going to go the DUPLO route when she's really young. But, I'd love some sets for her when she gets older, preferably ones that don't bankrupt me. :\

It was me that had issues. I did the "hold at fed ex store" thing and it randomly delayed it an extra day, which I did not know until halfway through the original delivery day when the tracking all of a sudden changed.
The next day, they delivered it to my apartment complex front office and never tried delivering to my door or putting a door tag up. I only knew because I checked the office on a whim as I went to work and the box was there for an hour or so. Then a bit after I got the box, tracking finally showed "delivered."
The Lego reps have been so nice in emails, and I like the VIP program after these two sets I ordered. It is a shame that an outside party (FedEx) is souring some of us to ordering direct from Lego. I too am thinking of having them deliver to my work next time, but knowing my luck it will deliver on a day that I am off work.
Ten cents per piece is the "holy grail" that you want to be looking for - unless you found a great sale, or you are building a large model (ie. Tower Bridge), you aren't going to do much better.
After my son left the DUPLO stage around 3-4 years old, I bought him one of those LEGO buckets, something like this:

That gave him a lot of basic-type pieces of all shapes, sizes and colors to build with his imagination, as well as a few basic instruction-style builds.
After that, he moved onto LEGO City sets around age 5. The new LEGO Friends sets might also be an alternative at that age.
Now he's into Ninjago, which was something he started interest in himself (and his friends at school).
It sounds like your daughter is very young - in that case I wouldn't worry about buying sets now, rather I would just look at what's available when she reaches the appropriate age, as LEGO is going to be around for a long time, especially given its recent rise in popularity. If those Friends sets don't take off, they could become very limited (and expensive) if you wanted to get them later, but that's about the only ones I would worry about at this point.

The Creator line usually has the most bang for the buck in the lower to mid tier price ranges. They also have instructions for 3 different sets which is another plus.

Great, thanks for the info. I was guessing something alone the line of that bucket, too. I'd like to buy her full on sets in the future, but the licensed ones (like Star Wars, etc) are pretty expensive.

Some of the Star Wars ones are very fairly priced for the piece count, but there are some with a big Star Wars tax on them.
Unfortunately, the coolest sets are the ones that are expensive and have insane piece counts.
And Lego is pretty much the same price it has always been. It used to be around the $.10 a piece ratio back in the 80s when I first got into it. There were some with better price per brick than others, but the $.10 a brick pricing continues to be the best way to look at things without going into the insane sets like Tower Bridge or the modulars.

Done! It was a really fun build. The windows on Olivander's were a lot of fun to put together. Gringotts was my favorite. I'm definitely addicted now. Getting Town Hall next month.

I picked up the Knight Bus in addition to the Diagon Alley one and it's a pretty fun set too. There's a swinging chandelier and a sliding bed inside that are pretty clever.

I dunno, I really like "The Burrow" myself, and I think the Hogwarts Castle is pretty neat too.
Hagrid's Hut looks pretty cool too for a smaller set. I don't know if it's worth $40 though, maybe $30.
Yeah, the HP line is fantastic. I'm a bit biased because I've been collecting it since 2001, but the sets are pretty special. Lots of unique pieces and interesting displays. And it isn't quite like anything they've done before. The original HP Lego line for the Sorcerer's Stone was unusual in that all the sets could be combined to form one large Hogwarts. And they built on that with the CoS and PoA lines too. Combining all the sets formed a pretty epic display.
And the new Hagrid's Hut is a cool little build. It has a neat, cozy interior.

Been knocking around ideas in my head for making my own MOC modular to add to the official ones, but I dont think I have enough of one colored brick to make a building quite large enough. Trying to think of ways around that. If I make one, it will probably be a half base one like how the pet shop splits in half.

I only meant to say that I doubt LEGO will be releasing anything as badass while they make LOTR sets. I hope I'm wrong, but looking through the Harry Potter sets there are only 2 or 3 sets I like (too many that rely on stickers for building details, yuck).
I do like 1 or 2 of the new LOTR sets that are coming out (Shelob, and maybe the Weathertop one), so maybe they'll give this license a little more effort than Harry Potter.

I used bricklink.
If I had to do it again, I'd probably buy it complete if if I found it around 1k. I had to make a few sacrifices with color substitutions for internal parts, over 25 bricklink orders, and hours just sorting and keeping inventory. I'd rather get it boxed with all the proper parts, a physical instruction book, minifigs and all that. The set complete will always have great resell value.
I'll still have fun building it, but I might break it down and sell it off afterwards.

QF-45 Sarigar Parts List is completed, and formatted into Bricklink Wishlist XML.
Good news - it costs approx $100 to order all (well most, see below) parts new, so it's not too bad considering there's 767 parts and the model weighs 500 grams. I don't know if this thing is much bigger than it seems at first, or the bricks are packed together so much that it's so heavy - probably both. It's really crazy to think this thing is apparently an original design too, not based on an existing sci-fi ship. It's so great looking, on top of being incredibly put together.
Bad news - some parts appear to be really rare and out of production, so good luck finding them new, or even finding them at all in the amount needed. Also, I think I had to source parts from four sellers just to get it all, even though some are used parts, and I was really scraping by for some parts, barely finding enough of them.

Mockups are pretty common before trying to refine and detail out a solid and complete MOC. I'm sure you knew that, haha. But obviously if you don't have the colors now, you can always see what you'd need and do the joy that is Bricklink!

Yeah. I just spent the last few hours using what bricks i had to start a modular MOC, and about the only brick I have lots of 1x(fill in the blank) bricks of is black. And black is not exactly a building color. Tonight was more an experiment in structural integrity.
I don't have a wide variety of bricks that would work well for a modular due to just buying almost nothing but space sets as a kid. And a large majority of my larger beam bricks are technic, so they have the holes through them.
I managed to build a single floor of a half plate modular, complete with a custom built staircase going to the second floor. The building colors? Black with white trim occasionally.
I have some studs showing on the front of the building to try and make a sign to go on it. I was wanting to make an arcade, but the color choice of the building (due to the colors being the only ones with ample amounts available) makes me want to make a big sign that says "Club Blacktron" or something. Since I don't have tons of pieces for the second floor, I am thinking of it being mostly windows or something. Like the old space windows.
I have tons of bricks, but not enough that works well to make my own modular. And I can survive without making one. It was just a whim, yet fun. If I had a huge variety of pieces, I have grand ideas in my head for a really freaky arcade for all the mini figs to play it. I have been experimenting with making small arcade cabinets (even a DDR clone) for the minifigs to play. I just dont have enough small detail bricks to pull it off the way I imagined.
The best thing is that building the two modulars I bought has sparked my imagination again to build, build, build.

Ditto. I still think the body on the set is slick as hell, but the head just kills all my passion to get it. I will probably cave on it, because it is R2D2 and detailed enough to be a fine show piece on a shelf.
The Lego Zoetrope was my favorite Technic set at Bricks by the Bay. Never knew what it was before, but now I want to make my own. You need to watch the video to see how cool it is.

yesterday I found out a small toy shop in town also has lego in the back.
no real deals to be had there, as they are not a large franchise or anything.
BUT they had quite a few OOP sets.
for example
all for regular RRP, but for instance the family house is already 50% more expensive on amazon...
damn, dunno what to do,
they also had the small red creator car, that complements my car collection nicely ^^

I built the first two of those and they're a nice Lego snack - and indeed very cute. They manage to get a lot of detail and decoration out of simple tricks (or bricks) - exactly the sort of design that further convinces me that I don't have any talent for architecture or painting.
One of the fun bits of the mini modulars, is that MOCing new ones is quick and fun. Also maybe good for prototyping something you plan to build big later
Other than buying more modulars, creator houses are good to get some bricks in

So I finished my Nanoblock Eiffel Tower last night. Here's a few pictures...Well, a lot of pictures. A picture after each step (picking up where I left off)!
Final picture shows the extra pieces, too. You get a good number with the sets from what I understand. Honestly, I'll be buying more of these. Since there's not a lot of Lego sets that I want at the moment (aside from Pet Shop and Town Hall), I'll pick a few more of these up to put in the office and play around with. I'm really happy with how it turned out and was quite surprised by the quality of the brick given the size.

So...I am really considering ordering the Grand Emporium set. Toys R US still has them and they are $135 and that has to be my favorite modular set by far. With it being out of print I should jump on it but something is stopping me

It's not out of print just yet...Fire Brigade is the one going out of print soon, though.
