So, I just completed the Hotel in the Mini Modulars set and holy shit - I can't believe there's still another 3 to go! Such an awesome set for 90AUD. And it looks amazing. The mini iterations will do me just fine.

A quick first attempt while on a break at work. Probably a bit too big for the Architecture series but I feel this looks much closer to Big Ben than the proposed design.
Nice work - it IS much better looking. I wonder why they went the route they did. :\

Because the guy who designed it is some celebrity architect who probably has limited experience with high end Lego design and trickery.

Oh? I didn't know this (if this is true...Not sure if sarcastic lol). But whatever the case, the architecture model will look good on a desk or display, but in terms of true Lego "creativity", there is some lacking here.

It's also much bigger, to be fair. 6x6 tower base as opposed to just 3x3 on the original model.

Saw the Sydney Opera House in the LEGO store last weekend and just wasn't impressed by its design at all. I hope the Big Ben is better but I don't hold out much hope, none of the smaller sets with the possible exception of the Guggenheim are that good.

First post in this thread. I have a daughter who will be turning 4 years old in July. She's been playing games for a couple of years, and for the last 6 months has been spending a lot of time on the 3DS playing both new and legacy type games. Are there any good Lego sets that could get the design/engineering/how stuff fits together/ juices flowing for someone her age?

Pretty much anything Duplo. Several Gaffers in here with Daughters have said nice things about the new Friends line. But that's probably too much for a 4 year old.

Hey, there's no way that the UCS Super Star Destroyer would already be going out of print would it? A friend of mine spotted that for some reason Amazon had a few left for $320 (!!) a couple of days ago; by the time I got the text they were already all gone. They haven't restocked and 3rd parties are selling for way above $400. I looked around and it's also listed as Hard to Find on Lego.com, but I don't know if that means anything, and it seems to be out at other places as well (but still available at some). Stuff normally sticks around for at least a year right? Maybe there's just a lull while they're making more? I'm getting paranoid, I really want this thing but it would be a bitch if I had to swing it right now :X

It's not going out of print any time soon. Those Amazon price/stock fluctuations are normal. You are correct, UCS sets last much longer than less than a year.

It only came out mid last year, it will be around for quite a while. Amazon just does sales now and then, they were probably doing it to match the LEGO Double VIP points.

Not every set can be Fallingwater or Robie House. Lego needs to make cheap Architecture sets too. I think it's decent given the number of pieces.
Did Harry Potter LEGO go off the market? I was looking for a small set for my GF's kid and I couldn't find one at two Wal-Mart's and a Target. Is it just a shortage in my area or is there some LEGO news I havent' seen? Are they clearing Harry Potter stock in anticipation for LotR?

Generally "Hard to Find" on Lego.com means that the set is not normally sold in all brick & mortar stores - this would be stuff like retailer exclusives, Lego.com/Lego Store exclusives or huge sets that are generally online-only (other than Lego stores). Looking at the category anything that doesn't seem to fall into one of those descriptions is marked down/clearanced. Definitely anything in the $150+ category would always be in the "Hard To Find" category from day 1.
I got a peek at the Lego retailers/wholesale catalog and I believe Harry Potter is set to be available for ordering the whole year, but it is on the tail end and many stores have stopped carrying the line. For brick/mortar stores, as much as I hate their markup on Lego sets, I'd say Toys R Us is your best bet for finding lines that are in this kind of situation (or recently discontinued, like the Pharaoh's Quest line that just went out at the end of last year). Online it looks like Amazon still has a pretty good selection.

Yeah, it's like the Modulars, you don't find them anywhere but online retailers and LEGO stores. Sometimes select Toys R us locations will carry UCS star Wars stuff during the holidays.
They're OOP I do believe. Just picked this up today for $5.00. (Wal-Mart's in Canada seem to be clearing out most HP sets)

Don't architects use Lego? There used to be something like 'Architect's Lego', it had smaller bricks than normal - my art teacher at school had some.
In Canada, it's mostly all listed on the website, but in store they're fairly good at separating it all into a separate clearance area of the toy section or at least putting up a "clearance" tag.
Just finished my build on the above HP set. I love how creative you can be with such a small set! (I even took one of the "flames" and added it to my firetruck for water!)
My store had battle packs for 5.90 and I got Mace Windus Fighter for 19.90. They had clearance price stickers on them . Use a scanner to test it out.

A recent example of the crazy appreciation in value of LEGO sets, once they go OOP.
The Imperial Flagship set (10210) went OOP on December 20th. In three months it has gone from its MSRP of $180 to averaging $350 on eBay.
The Green Grocer (10185), which went OOP 15 months ago, has now crossed the $600 mark on eBay - four times its original $150 MSRP.
With the Fire Brigade heading OOP soon, I expect similar craziness in the months to come. I don't know if this is a bubble that is going to burst anytime soon, but with the increasing popularity of LEGO, especially for adults, I wouldn't be surprised to see this trend increase over the next few years.
The lesson to be learned here is that if you have any desire for a particular set, especially those in the 10,000 series - get it before it goes OOP.

Yup - been this way for a while. Statue of Liberty was $200 and goes for $650+, Darth Maul Bust was $150 and goes for $500+, UCS Falcon was $500 and goes for $1200+...Lower value sets go for more return later (3x and better), but higher value sets at 2x > lower value at 3x. It's nuts!

If you're interested in the super sets, the best way I know of is to check Brickset.com and see when the set released. ~1.5-2 years after release is the expected OOP time.

I really want Green Grocer but I don't think I can swallow $500+ which is the cheapest you can find it for now. Too bad, a year ago it was still around $300.
Hell, Grand Emporium and Pet Shop are going for ~$200 on Amazon and Town Hall is going for ~$250 by 3rd party sellers (this happens whenever Amazon goes out of stock), even though these sets are in production.
I got Winter Toy Shop a few months ago for $59.99 and it's already selling for $130 online.
That's a great idea. Super value too for all those minifigures.

Really appreciate the work you've put into this. Sadly £900 spent in the last month on Lego means I have to wait but she will be mine. Oh yes, she will be mine.
On a more sour note; my lastest delivery from Lego has had a change of vocation. He no longer wants to come and join my band of merry minifigs but instead has opted for life on the open road. Everyday he leaves Wmbley to take a little trip but as soon as he is about to be taken out of the van he pleased for "one more day" of driving with his new best friend, the HDNL driver.
Being a decent chap and all Mr Driver grants this extension and off they go back to Wembley for the night with fresh adventures filling his little head.

I'm close to writing to the Board of Directors of HDNL as this is the 3rd address and at least 10th time we've been on this merry dance together. Used work to get the company's annual report so I have the names and addresses of the whole board.
I emailed Lego twice in the last 3 days but no reply yet which is odd. Next up is a phone call.
