Reminds me of the lose bricks my grandmother has. When I went back recently I noticed they still had my two models I built last time intact and on display.

The slope pieces have a stippled effect and the burrs from when they were removed from the mold are still pretty visible. It's definitely interesting how they've changed over the years.

Finally spent some time going through your MOC PhoncipleBone - looks incredible! You did a great job on it, especially for a first large scale project! Did you post it over at Eurobricks?

E: Uhh, your MOC is PERFECT for the current Eurobricks competition! http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=69174
I read somewhere in that thread that only members of Eurobricks before the contest Started are eligible. Lame if true. Either way, I have time to refine it.

Really enjoyed the Fire Brigade and I can see what people mean about the 2nd floor.

The Engine itself was nicely done and I love the ladder. Was a bit annoyed to see the stairs are one piece but I guess for strength that's not such a bad thing.

2nd floor, the bricks textures, the upside down window toppers..... the 1932.....

The only downside was the tree as I think it's too flimsy so I removed it. I've toyed with adding some lights to brighten up the display but I think a few more are needed to give it that lived in look during the evening.

The 1932 is nice but was so weird to wedge in. The numbers on Town Hall are a giant improvement.
Yeah it was a bit of a pain but not so much trying to put it in as much as making sure all the blocks are super straight so they fit together and form a smooth writing. Also those stupid hooks.

Town Hall is what showed me how to make smoother ones like in my MOC. Basically it is just a long antenna that you clip the pieces onto then slide into place. You just alternate what direction the clip faces.
You snap the pieces into position one at a time instead of building the entire number and then straightening it. Much cleaner and easier.

Getting them all straight was what annoyed me. The're still not quite right. I doubt I will get the Town Hall (nowhere to display it) but I will look at the instructions.

That certainly does sound like a much better way to do it and would have saved me a few minutes of aggravation. Should check the building instructions for it later, sounds like some solid inspiration.

It should be in the third book. It is part of the roof build.

So, who here actually has the Sopwith? How does the build fare? Interesting or so-so?

The X-Wing and Fury Interceptor have stood out to me the most as builds, purely because they have one element that is somewhat ingeniously conceived; The X-Wing has the nose and the Interceptor, the wings. Super clever stuff.

Sopwith is an amazing build.

I think I can finally say that the exterior to my Cafe Modular MOC is completed. I was worried about not having enough 2x2 dark grey flat tiles, so I took apart my Sonic Boom for some 1x whatever pieces. Well, I still did not have enough to do a full sidewalk, so I had to think of some creative ways to fill in the entire sidewalk area.

They say that necessity is the mother of invention. So I had to get creative to make the sidewalk Modular compatible.

I went down to two outside tables as opposed to four. This allowed me to put chairs at each table, and an outside trash can as well. The chairs also easily rotate to move the figures on and off of them easily.

Not enough dark gray bricks? Just improvise with a checkerboard pattern leading to the front door.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

The completed Cafe MOC. I think I will redo the condiment bar inside, and have toyed with adding ceiling fans to the second floor (actually integrated into the underside of the roof) but I believe that I have the outside completed now. If I get a lot of 2x2 dark gray flat tiles I might fix up the sidewalk a bit, but I think it works. I cannot have the street lamp all the other modulars have because it interferes with the chairs outside.

Added ceiling fans for the second floor. They are attached to the roof piece, but hang down enough to spin freely and be visible if you happen to be a mini figure sitting on the second floor lounge.

Hrm, just wondering, it's been a while since the Cuuso page update - have the Hayabusa sets been sold outside of Japan yet? Did I already miss it?

E: Uhh, your MOC is PERFECT for the current Eurobricks competition! http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=69174

Just signed up for Eurobricks. Will wait until I get back from my trip this week to post my Cafe MOC in there. Looking at a few of the entries so far, I feel good about it. I have a very self defeatist attitude with much of what I do, but also recognize that I can do some stuff very, very well.

I am proud of this Cafe MOC. Especially as it is my very first large scale MOC attempt, and my first MOC since I was a child. The great and horrible thing is that now that the MOC bug has settled in, I want to do more. But my biggest source of bricks are the modular buildings, and I dont want to take those apart because all I want to MOC sets to compliment those. Perhaps it is time to take apart my TIE Fighter and Millenium Falcon sets and salvage them for parts. Of course, I can also just try and make that old school Space System MOC I said I would try a week ago.

I think setting a goal of the type of MOC sets the creative juices flowing a bit more. It opens things up a lot but also adds restrictions. And restrictions also force you to be more creative in your solutions.

Now to hope that while on my vacation I find a Lego store and can raid their pick-a-brick wall for random parts to make more MOCs.

we should have our own little moc competition.
^^

Wetwired would win. He goes all out and does custom parts and paint jobs. No one on here can compete with that.

But, I think if we all voted on a theme and rules, and made a separate thread to show off our creations so it might get more attention, it could be really fun.

EDIT: Wow. We have 23 members that have over 100 posts in this thread so far. Very cool. I am also frightened that I am closing in on 1000 posts. Perhaps I need to do more with my nights than read this thread religiously.

Yeah, dude. You really need to assess the situation. You're a grown man spending a ridiculous amount of time on an internet forum - one devoted to video games, no less.

Go build more Legos.

Haha. I was trying to be facetious/ironic/sarcastic; right over the head, it seems! Ain't nothing at all wrong with how you're living that life of yours, Phonciple.

Oh, no. I got it completely. But I will be away from home for the next week and a half, so no more building or MOCing for me. But I am crossing my fingers that wherever my wife and I pass through on our trip, there is a Lego store I can raid and go broke at.

Not to knock your confidence (your cafe is great) - eurobricks competitions tend to have people wait until the last few days before posting. Not sure if it's to give people more time to fine tune, or it's just eyeing up the competition. So expect quite a few more in the next few weeks

I wouldn't do paint jobs or decals for mocs. The tumbler and my mini figs are special cases. All my other stuff I don't bother with.

I liked the ideas from a while back where we all buy a reasonably priced creator set and each have to make something out of it.

I seriously don't understand how both LEGO and Mega Bloks can have the spidey license at pretty much the same time? Granted, the LEGO spidey set(s?) isn't out yet but it should be pretty soon

saw an ad on amazon pointing me to the listings for Mega Blok's new Amazing Spidey sets. Most are going for between 7 and 20 percent off

hard to reconcile my love for spidey with those figures. both spidey and the lizard look... pretty bad :( But then, I also think spidey in LEGO form also looks weird. He's is a very dynamic character, he translates much better to an action figure like this

unrelated: dat Darth Malgus minifig and awesome Sith Fury Class Intereptor. Originally I was going to pass, but it is a gorgeous ship and fig.

unrelated #2: Helm's Deep is going for $104 brand new right now... in case there are any more hold outs :p Sorry, I feel obligated to push LotR onto you guys.

Mega Bloks has the upcoming movie license and Lego has the cartoon/comic license

Sounds like a cool challenge... just wish the creator sets had more interesting color variation. too much mustard yellow, Heinz ketchup red and snow white :P There are some exceptions, mostly in the $100+ USD buildings

I'm just being difficult. :P The Helicopter is a good choice, it always seems to be on sale, has a lot of pieces for the price and many different block types included. I wouldn't mind one of the more expensive sets, though

Ok minifig trading GAF, I found a few extra minifigs lying around here's the updated list with the few I've sold\traded removed. I've also added a list below of my wanted minifigs. For those interested in trading or buying I'm pretty much looking at Bricklink average sale prices (unless otherwise stated) Though I'm willing to haggle.

This was my father's day gift yesterday. My five-year old's interpretation of her, her little sister & me from the Lego store. I'm bald so she figured I'd want as much hair as I could get. Nailed it.

Makes sense. You don't want to play your hand too early. I've never entered anything like this before, so I have no frame of reference. I also dont really think I have a snowball's chance in hell of doing much either since this is my first MOC.

I liked the ideas from a while back where we all buy a reasonably priced creator set and each have to make something out of it.

That sounds awesome. Everyone has the same pieces to work with, and only those pieces.

For father's Day I'm getting Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium (1 from each child). This is my first step down the dark trail of modulars. I have a nice place to display them atop my book cases, so I can collect the rest of the available series and get the new ones as they come out for years to come. I will get the Pet Shop and Town Hall later this year.

Howdy, LEGO-Gaf! I'm joining your hallowed ranks, because, well, the addiction bug has bit me good. I had, of course, messed with LEGOs in my youth, but as a married 37 year old, I just never paid attention.

That is, until, the Minecraft mini set was released. I had to have it. I got it in and there it sat for about a week, until yesterday I decided, eh, might as well put it together. I opened all the packets, got the instructions out, and set to work.

An hour later, I'm subscribing to this thread and pouring over the last few hundred posts, trying to figure out what to buy next.

I know instantly that I have to have any horror related things, as well as Star Wars and LOTR. Question is, what is a good first large build?

Right now i'm leaning towards the 7964 Republic Frigate, just because I can see a full build if it at the local Toys R Us and it looks amazing, but any other suggestions would be welcome!

I've moved to the dark side (Technic), so I can't comment on what System set to buy next...I haven't really followed enough to know what's "good" at the moment. But I will say, I would suggest avoiding TRU for your LEGO purchases. :) I'm sure you already knew that, though!

Horror - Haunted house coming in September, or one of the other Monster Fighter range.

My personal favourites
- VW camper van
- Space Shuttle expedition
- R2D2
- Mini modulars (small, but lots of pieces and really detailed)
- any of the modular buildings (start with Fire Brigade or Grand Emporium as they are going out of print very soon)
- Cool Cruiser or Sonic boom creator 3-in-1 sets. Bonus here is you get three sets of instructions with the same bricks, so more value

Yup, definitely getting that Haunted House in Sept! And nicoga3000, will def avoid TRU for LEGO purchases, I figured they were high priced there, I was just scouting, honest!

The current line of Monster Fighters looks cool, maybe I'll get that Vampyre Castle from LEGO S@H in order to get that snazzy mini Sopwith Camel. Either that or the Republic Frigate... or Helm's Deep... or.. .oor.....argh! My credit card hurts already.

If you really enjoyed the micro scale of the Minecraft set, I'd go over to LEGO.com, sign up for their VIP program, and order the Mini Modulars set. You can go to a LEGO store and do all of that, too, if you have one in your area. It's like $80, it has a ton of pieces, and it's a great build.
