Time for a Guess That Set!* First time not sorting the pieces!

*I guess "set" is a little misleading though

Damn, look at the elevators. So much great detail in this thing.

fO8iv.jpg

I both love and loathe the design. The detail is awesome in it, especially the floor pattern. But I hate just how complicated it seems to be just to be complicated. Hard to explain, but it (and many MOCs out there) seem to be overly complex just for the sake of complexity. I tend to really like the ones that strike the balance between complexity but also look like they could actually be an official set.

Also, the elevator doors are not functional. If they got the detail on the doors like that but made them actually be able to pull open, it would be cooler. Maybe I have gotten spoiled by the interactive aspect of many sets.

Speaking of MOCs (and mine is "meh" compared to most on Eurobricks)
Made some further modifications to Corner Florist today:

Before:
MetvUl.jpg

After:

Worked on the outside some. It no longer looks like overgrown plants out there. Now it looks like shelves with potted plants for sale.

(Sorry for the shitty lighting. I was lazy and didn't want to move) The only interior detail I have built so far. The cash register.

Hopefully I will finish this before the Modular Madness contest is over on Eurobricks. I will most likely submit the Cafe I made before, but I still want to finish this on time.

Speaking of which, who else is up for a MOC competition on GAF? I loved the idea put out there by someone else (dont feel like digging to find out whom) that everyone entering only uses a smaller, easy to find, Creator set and we see what everyone comes up with. The idea of a contest with everyone having the same tools at their disposal, and a limited piece count, intrigues me.

so you decided to remove your snot walls on the first floor.
And I think I will submit my modular to the contest too just for the fun of it, even if it will bomb hard :p

well i thought we pretty much decided upon using the

set

do you think we should get a new topic on the road for the "contest" in order to keep it somewhat organized?

Think you and I were the only ones that commented on using that set. But I do agree that around that size would be best. Perhaps get input on here for what set to use, then make another topic for the actual contest? And what kind of prize?

I'd be down for that set or any easy to find Creator set. To keep it more open to new people, that set would be great cuz it's only $13. Piece count is pretty small though. I bet most people in this thread would be willing to spend more.

Propeller Adventures is nice too for $20.

Wow, I never thought I would see the day, but I have finally replicated the Mini-Modular Pet Shop!
Here is the original Flickr render that I used:

And here are the pics of my own creation!
Please note that:
A. there are a few missing pieces
B. Some of the pieces used are not the same pieces and are just used as placeholders
C. The colors are a liiiiiitle bit off. I intend to buy the correct colors via bricklink later.

The front upper windows on the Pet Shop building are a little closer together because I was not in the mood to figure out exactly how to get them perfect and a 1x4 brick with 3 holes was MUCH easier and it looks fine IMO.

I think I actually improved it in one spot too. The pieces that stick out below the middle windows on the Pet Shop are meant to be the flower gardens. In the original they couldn't make one of them stick out, but in mine they can. :D

The other building (apartment?) requires a few more rounded pieces than I have, so I currently just have square plates in their place. The rear details need a bit of work, but that will be easy with the right pieces. Looking back at it I think I will lower the patio on the rear of the apartment and add some roof pieces beside it.

Big thanks to Trumpy who helped out with the middle floor of the Pet Shop.
The bottom floor of that and the first 2 floors on the apartment were pretty damn tricky as well, but I was incredibly happy when I stumbled onto the solution for them by accident.

I'll post more about the build later since I am very tired from working on this all day.

I am thinking a $20 max set. The blue roadster is a sweet set, but maybe a bit too limiting. Of course, that is also part of the appeal. Let's all look at some cheap Creator sets this week and get some ideas. $20 should be the cap, unless we go to something like the Log Cabin which is $30.

well I would say we can start small and work our way upwards...

LEGO GAF moc contest #1

Idea: to face of in a hardened moc battle where the winner takes all and everyone else gets a pat on the back.

Aim: Having fun and improving our moc'ing skills on the way.

Rules: One cheapish set (that is still readily available) is chosen to give everyone a level playing field. From the parts contained in this set (including the spares that come with the box) a moc is to be built, no further theme or model limitations are placed. The moc should however be of your own design and not blatantly copied from somewhere else, getting inspiration and ideas is of course permissible. Using parts not contained in the chosen set is not allowed.

Timeframe: From the day of contest announcement exactly one month is given, plenty of time for everyone to get the required set and start building. The moc should be posted in the contest thread by the final date and the OT will be updated with links to the corresponding post. Each entry should contain no more than 5 pictures including one that also shows the pile of left over parts. Every member only gets to submit one entry.

Face-off: The winner is then chosen by popular vote. For two weeks after the OT has been updated with the finalized entries and the voting round is officially opened by the OP voting can commence. Everyone can then post a list of all the mocs in order of preference (omitting your own moc if you entered). For each ballot the last placed moc gets one point, the penultimate moc gets two points and so on. The points are then added up and a finalized ranking will be posted in the OT

Any further Ideas, suggestions or amendments?

PS I would love to call dibs on the OT ;)

Some of the friends sets might be good - tree house has some nice pieces

Oh god no! If I start buying Friends sets then I am forced to get the rest due to OCD. I've already got my hands full on Technic, Creators, Town modulars & Marvel/DC Buildable Figures.

Glad I've not touched Star wars, Lord of the Rings & Harry Potter. Got all the Indiana Jones though, never again!

So we're set? The first MOC contest will be 6913...
VFyGj.png

Then the second will be 6912?
7LSEA.png

Third may be 6914?
EoSVD.png

Best to detail the plan ahead of the sets, so at least the others who don't want to do the first set or can't find them may be able to join the upcoming MOCtests with other set alternatives that are readily available.

Ideally, from start until the end of the month so it will be taking as small a dent on the wallets of the Gaffers that don't have these sets.

So, August 1st?

These are cheap sets (>$15) so not really a bid deal... i think. You can get like four of these for price of one video game...

Of course it has to be cheap. Would you rather do a contest with the 10214?
fnbV5.png

I didn't say it should be costly. Just noted that the planned sets are cheap so the cost shouldn't be a big deal for anyone.
That said, 10214 offers a lot more options.
And that said, smaller is better, more challenging.

After only getting back into lego the last few months, I haven't had the opportunity to build anything of my own creation since I was maybe 13-14.
Everything about this contest sounds absolutely wonderful!

The Blue Roadster is a bit too limiting in my opinion. I think we would see the most varied and strange results with the Prehistoric Creature pack honestly.

One more to add to the mix that would give a bit of variety and still be smaller:
5765-0000-xx-23-1.jpg

Also because I dont have this set yet, and it is an excuse to buy it. The Blue Roadster has been stripped for parts and is in other MOCs already. But a second wouldnt hurt.

Of course it has to be cheap. Would you rather do a contest with the 10214?
fnbV5.png

That is the best source for MOC materials. Been pillaging that for my modular mocs, and still have lots of stuff left.

But the smaller sets create a challenge. Let's stick with that. I say we keep discussing the set to use these next two weeks, then plan to tackle it.

The Blue Roadster isn't really the sort of set I would have bought on my own and I agree it appears limited, but that's the fun of this contest for me -- to make me buy something [cheap] that I wouldn't have and figure out something to build that I probably wouldn't have on my own.

But ya, I was going to suggest the T-Rex cuz it seems like that would get the most creative looking things. We'll mostly likely get a bunch of cars with the BR, but who knows?

The Blue Roadster is actually a really neat little set. I am not into the car sets, but I bought it months ago because it was small and cheap. Packs a lot of detail for being so tiny.

I cannot wait to see the next generation of the Marvel and DC minifigs. I've bought all but one of the superhero sets out now, and I wanna see some hints at what's coming next.

I'm curious if those four minifigs they're giving away will be any good, though. Looking at some of the past Comic-Con exclusives (Captain America, Iron Man, Green Lantern) they all looked poorly printed and kinda shitty.

Hey all, sorry about seeming so negative in the first post. I should have mentioned my dislike for the acronym in the LEGO thread and always keep forgetting to. The contest sounds great and I look forward to seeing all the models.

(Quoting you from the other thread since this isn't about the contest)

I'm with you. I think that and AFOL are really annoying terms. I have no basis for these feelings.

There's a Lego event in Toronto this weekend I was going to take my girls to (6 and 1.5 respectively).

http://www.brickfete.com/

The website makes me very nervous about taking them...it reads like kids are not at all welcome, even though it says they are.

Has anybody had any experience taking little ones to shows like this? Bad idea?

Honestly, I would think kids would be MORE than welcome. I've never been to an event (because they're either on a bad weekend or I just don't know about them), but pictures of them always how kids marveling at the creations. These cons are just as much for the adults as they are the kids.

LEGO must release these!

I haven't seen him post much of anything as of late; I can only hope he's designing set there.

Here's another I like; the descriptions are pretty awesome too:

33B96.jpg

It was brought to our attention by the Four Soori System Fuel Co. that communication was suddenly lost with one of their five largest utility ships, the "Ambassador".

Incoming transmission...Not only was transmission with the ship lost, but it's tracking signal is undetectable as well. We sent out two Scaevola scouts to physically identify the vessel in it's last known location....

....Visual contact of the "Ambassador" was confirmed, the situation is unprecedented. Upon debriefing the scout pilots it has bee described as "frozen" in space... that was only part of it. The ship was torn in half as if a picture of it still remained in space the instant it was shot.

A science vessel accompanied by two fighters was sent out to the location. Although we had visual confirmation of the ship, none of our devices were able to detect it. First step was to send out a remote probe. As it reached the distance of five hundred yards, the probe instantly stopped and any sorts of communication or video imagery was lost.

We do not know what we are dealing whit. It could be an anomaly either caused by unknown an phenomenon or instability in the fuel substance carried in the containers, yet somehow the fact that the ship was blown in half did not fit in with these hypotheses....

....days later we started receiving data and a faint signal from our probe. The ship was engulfed by something that slows down all matter...
...from what we know, no anti-government faction has access to this sort of technology. Ballistics prove the ship was shot in it's thickest region by a charged beam. This would only be possible if the target is stationery since the weapon needs up to 30 seconds to fully charge...

It is clearly a warning, but it's reasons are ambiguous for now.

Yeah him and nneenn were two of the best Lego builders, sadly nnenn died.

Shit, really? :( I remember seeing them comment on each other's MOCs a few times. He had some really amazing stuff...
