On Sunday/Monday ill be driving the 1500 I-5 hike to Western WA. Last time I made this trip I did it with another person. 26 hours straight. Now I am alone, and this is my first LONG trip driving alone, so I need tips to:

A.) Stay Awake
B.) Driving Music
C.) Good Halfway Point to Stay
D.) Precautionary Measures

I must survive this trip, so I can live in the state I love so much. I MUST ESCAPE ARIZONA!

I always make sure to bring something that I can easily sing along to. Singing helps me to stay awake. And frequent pit stops for more Mountain Dew.

A.) Stay Awake

I mentioned this a while back in a different thread, but my favorite tactic for staying awake while driving is to find an oldies station on the dial (and, rest assured, there will be at least one). You'll know every single song by heart and can sing along with each and every one of 'em. You may not be particularly entertained by this, mind you, but it'll help keep you from nodding off.

Good luck!

Singing Along to music, good ideas. I have a pretty sizable CD collection and I know most of the songs, so that should work out well.

Radio commercials are the devil so ill have to avoid them.

You could constantly change the temperature levels in the car to stay awake. Listen to really bizzare music that has no rythem. Leave in the evening so the final hours of driving will all be day time.

My mother and I were 'insane' by hour 24. The heat in my black no-air conditioned car made the arguments pretty hilarious in hindsight.

Jason Kidd murdered my dog in cold blood!
Why would someone drive 26 straight hours?

I'd break it up into two days, and make sure I stop every few hours.

The best thing is to really plan the trip and make sure you allow yourself some room for rest. Make sure that whenever you have to go through an area that doesn't have many stop areas, you are well rested to be able to travel through them with no problems.

Other than that, have water readily available to you, and mountain dew (to keep you awake.)

Of course, get tons of albums, in order to have some variety. You can also plan along with them, as you could listen to an album that lasts an hour and know more or less where you should be by then.

Good luck!

For long driving trips, I always record talk shows that I like, as well as books on tape (or CD, rather). I'll listen to music too, but I usually become engrossed in the discussion or book that time goes by much quicker.

I'll second the water/Mountain Dew combo IJoel mentioned. Can't beat that.

I wouldn't suggest this for any other reason, as I find it's a rather evil drug, but methamphetamines will keep you awake long enough to drive to the MOON, let alone up the coast.

If you stop in Sacramento we will do lunch MAF.

We'll take a short ride to where I crashed my car upside down in a ditch because I fell asleep driving. That should keep you awake ;)

It actually wouldn't be a bad idea to stop in different towns and visit some random GAF people on the way back up here Ryan. I'd really recommend you drive for a couple of hours (like 3-5) and then stopping for a short nap like 1-2 hours. It'll take you longer to get back but it'll make sure you don't accidently drive into a ditch that you can't get your car out of. If you do make short stops, bring some tape and a sign saying that you're going to Seattle and napping in the car for a litle bit, with you to prop on your window in case someone is wondering why you're parked there

We should hit up China Cottage (or whatever that one resturant was) with Doug and Janet when you get back Ryan.

And Dear Lord, change your avatar to something else. The one you have now is not MAF enough. WE NEED ZOAMELGUSTAR!

AZ has made me so tired of old people.

China Cottage moved to like Everett or some shit, maybe we will. I miss its old location already.

Apparently there's some really good Chinese in Mill Creek -- Imperial Garden or somesuch.

Shouta: baby makes getting out very hard these days. :((((((((((((((((((((((((((

My days of pouring Applebee's Happy Hour well drinks down my throat are TEH OVAR. :((((((

Doug: Staples Mix Up, ill be working at one 13 miles away. I woulda worked at the one next to me, but there's less chance of me getting decent hours.

*sigh*

Of course babies make it hard to go out! You knew it deep in your Nintendo-hating gut! Just wait until she turns two. o_O

Bothell, not Bothell/Mill Creek

Yay for staples stupid store naming scheme. My manager got Bothell mixed up with Bothell/Mill Creek.

So this morning I call my manager, ask for the # to the store I had talked to, he gives me the Bothell/Mill Creek store, after I had talked to the Bothell Store, so the Bothell/Mill Creek store is all confused but says ill have a job, but then I get a call from Bothell asking why they got a Fax 5 minutes ago addressed to the manager of the Bothell/Mill Creek store asking if I still wanted to work at their store and im like I do and...jesus man alive.

Haha, AUGH. The Bothell one is a pretty nice one, though, plus it's right by a big Starbucks. It's not that far from my old apartment -- just follow the road toward Woodinville and it's on the left, across from yucky HOME DESPOT.

Bothell Manager made it sound like it was MILES AWAY!

Bothell, is that near Brier and Mountlake Terrace, which is where I am currently living before I move back into Seattle Seattle.

Congrats on the move.

I made the move from Florida to Los Angeles after college and haven't regretted at all.

I once listened to the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion album 6 or 7 hours straight on a road trip.
It's one of those records that always left me wanting more.

Also: Consume plenty of Frosted Donettes and Beef Jerky.

Bothell's between Kenmore and Woodinville, with Lynnwood to the north, and Juanita/Toem Lake/Kirkland to the south.

You live in Seattle (greater {pretty much everyone that lives in western washington near lake washington says they live in Seattle}) too?
