Starting the thread about the plays for some reason popped this movie in to my head... any classic movie folks seen it? Great work by Vincent Prince, great look, just an all around cool ass movie... and I love the ending.

Scarlatti: Sir, at least spare my wife. I give her to you to do what you please.
Prospero: I've already had that doubtful pleasure.

:lol

This flick freaked me out a bit when I was young--the different colored rooms really got to me. Very surreal and nightmarish.

The only thing I've seen out is a 2fer with :

The Masque of the Red Death / The Premature Burial

I don't know what the quality of the transfer is... considering it's a 2fer... it might not be that hot.

Actually, the tranfers are pretty damn good.

One of my favorite films, as I'm a huge Vincent Price and Roger Corman fan. It's amazing what they accomplished with a shoestring budget.

If you don't own them already, I highly recommend these two discs:

Haunted Palace is also beautifully shot, scored, and based on a cool Lovecraft tale, despite the Poe tagline. Funny story behind that, which is told by Corman in the extra features on the disc. Tower of London is pure cheese, Corman's take on Richard III.

Fall of the House of Usher is considered by many to be Corman/Price's best film. Fantastic DVD transfer and a feature length commentary by Corman. They also include Pit and the Pendulum, probably the most popular Price film, with commentary of its own. Crazy that these were both included on the same DVD.

Vincent Price is great!

I thought Red Death was ok, but I don't like it as much as any of the other Price/Corman films for some reason. Pit and the Pendulum is my fave, but all the rest are great really.

Tomb of Ligea

is another good Price/Corman film, it has a different, less playful, feel than the other Corman films. I thought the Evening of Edgar Allen Poe on the same disc was really great. It's just Price acting out four different Poe stories (Tell-tale Heart, The Sphinx, Cask of Amontillado, Pit and the Pendulum) by himself, which works as they're all from a first person perspective. The picture isn't too good (it was a TV special or something), but it's one of my favourite things he's been in - definately worth checking out if you're into Poe or Price.

Non-Corman Price films like

and

are also cool, especially Phibes which has a kind of quiet, surreal atmosphere that I loved - quite different from the Corman films.

I thought Scream and Scream again was awful - plus Price is only in it for about five minutes!

My essential picks for a Price marathon would be:

Heh, yeah scream scream again is awful, but it was just so bizzare. like that weird blonde guy being chased by the police for like half the movie then ripping his hand off all to weird beatnik music. I was fooled by it having vincent price, christopher lee and peter cushing in it.

It was a pretty bizarre film from what I remember, wasn't there some fascist plot by nazis to make supermen who couldn't be killed, or something? It was like two different films smashed together. I don't remember too much as I started to get drunk in order to make the film seem more passable...

yeah, peter cushing was one of the nazi guys, vincent price was creating some kind of super synthetic people for some reason and they had to cover up the evil plot
