Why do these guys look more fat than muscle?

Because their muscles are huge and aren't exactly under any strain under normal circumstances. Look at him during the actual lift and tell me he looks more fat than muscle.
Plus they are not shredded, as they are going for maximum strength rather than aesthetics. Even the 'beer belly' a lot of them have is mainly muscle.
