I was kind of skeptical at first upon seeing this, but it keeps to the heart of the original series and is just as good if not better in some respects. I liked how in the first episode, they used those creatures that The Master woke up in Terror of the Autons. I always thought that was one of the cornier/campier Dr. Who episodes and it just seemed so fitting as a debute for the new series. I wonder if the series is doing well in Britain, because I'd really like to see it continue if it can keep up in this quality. I really don't see what is stopping BBC America from bringing this show to the US either.

BTW, I've only seen the first two volumes of the first season so far, but I was wondering about the Time Lords' war with the Daleks. I don't recall Gallifrey ever being destroyed in any of the old series / movies that I've seen. Have I missed a movie or something exclusive to Britain where this took place, or is it just a recent plot development of the new series that will go explained later?

A good friend who is a bid Who fan has taken issue with the supposed sexualization of The Doctor, who she claims is supposed to be fairly asexual.

As a casual appreciator of the original (especially the Douglas Adams episodes like The Pirate Planet) I find the new show fun.

They've sexualized The Doctor? How?

I guess I haven't seen enough episodes yet...

I think it is the later.

Have you watched the videos on the BBC site? They tell you all about the (new) series and episodes. There is also the confidentials that were released everyweek.

I think Cockles is a big fan, should ask him.

The New Doctor Who is ace, I need to catch up on it.

I really liked Eccleston and the way he played him. It was fun and fast. Yeah, past Doctors were pretty much old grumpymen, but not ALL of them.

This show just finished up on Canadian TV. It's worth sticking with it- the episodes got better as they went on, and the ending is great. I think it captures the perfect balance of drama and cheesiness that defines Dr. Who.

Yeah, my favorite doctors are the fourth and sixth doctors (the fourth being that guy with that afro who always wears a scarf and the sixth being the guy with curly hair that always wears obnoxious looking outfits that are really bright). They were the more corny/funny doctors and what really got me into the show when I was younger. This new doctor is kind of like a conglomeration between the two and something else entirely, which I like. ^^

There's some explanation about the Time War later in the series, but not a lot.
As to the friend taking issue with the sexualisation of the Doctor, they must have missed the Paul McGann movie.

I'm surprised none of the new Doctor Who haters have made it into this thread. There have been several threads where the general tenor is how much the new show stinks. Most of the ire seems to be aimed at the show's writer, if I recall.

When I first heard about the "reality TV" episode I thought they'd sunk to a new low, but it turned out better than I expected, and overall I quite enjoyed the first season of the new series. It's just annoying that I've got to wait till Christmas for more. I see they've been churning out DVDs of this season already though, I was quite surprised at the speed at which those are coming out. I'd link them, but GAF doesn't have an amazon.co.uk affiliate account, and looking on amazon.com they don't seem to be available in the US yet.
