The Official Domino Thread

So Domino finally comes out this Friday and I saw the first review today, so why not start the official thread?

Title: Domino
Director: Tony Scott
Starring: Keira Knightley, Mickey Rourke, Christopher Walken, Lucy Lui
Starting: October 14th, 2005

As for the first review, I'll put it in spoiler tags for those who don't care to find out...

The latest issue of Rolling Stone gave it 2.5 stars.

So who's going to see Domino this Friday? I know I am.

Richard Kelly was more the selling point for me than anything in your post... and it doesn't seem like the script turned out well (or, possibly, that Tony Scott botched it), if the reviews are anything to go by.

I saw an advance screening of this movie today. It stinks. I really liked Man on Fire (also by Tony Scott) but this movie has just way too much of his style. The camera never stops shaking and the entire film is bathed in a yellow washout. The screenplay is mediocre at best and the acting isn't too hot ever. Micky Rourke is pretty damn good though, and Walken is good too but not in it very much.

Also, it's almost 2 and a half hours long, which is fine except that it stinks.

On the plus side you get to see Kira's titties, but even they weren't enough to save this film.

Did the trailer for this movie anger anyone else besides me?

I did get sick of hearing "My name is Domino Harvey. I am a bounty hunter." And "Heads you live, tails you die" bugged me.

Without even having seen the movie I can safely say that if you don't like movies in the style of True Romance and Man on Fire you won't like this.

I do wish Tony would get back to his Crimson Tide or The Last Boyscout days of photography and editing. Regardless, I'll still see whatever he projects on a cinema screen.

At first I thought this was about the classic hood passtime, Dominos. I was about to break out the DOMINO MOTHERFUCKER!

Then I thought this was about the one-hit hip-hop wonder Domino. I did like that one song he made...whatever the fuck it was called.

Then I realized it was about a movie I've never heard of. Yet I decided to post a reply anyway. Wierd, huh? PEACE.

When did she grow tities?

NASA helped us find them with their awesome space satellites.

Also, I really, really didn't like the movie. It was only so-so, with the best performances coming from the secondary cast members. Go see Wallace & Gromitt, The History of Violence, or Serenity instead.

I'm not going, in spite of Walken, specifically because I hate the advertising for this so much.

MY NAME IS DOMINO HARVEY
I AM A BOUNTY HUNTER

I saw them in the jacket or the lack of them I should say...so if her titties are the only plus you have, think I will pass...

Agreed. Keira Knightly is a less attractive, somewhat anorexic version of Natalie Portman. By 'less attractive' I don't mean that she's unattractive, just not "lie to the ATM ticket machine to get a children's-priced ticket" kind of attractive.

You know, when Tony Scott's next film was going to be Deja Vu, I had hope that he'd get out of this hyper-stylized funk. Now that he dropped out of that and joined the remake of The Warriors, I fear he's just going to continue to make this stuff hard on the eyes. I've seen a lot of crazy underground anti-Hollywood films with thousands of cuts in the span of minutes and shocking visuals, but at least that stuff had a point. Tony Scott just does it because he can. It made sense in Enemy of the State, but not since then.

Naturally, I'm finding no reason to see Domino.

I saw Domino tonight and I don't think it's nearly as bad as the reviews make it out to be. If you go in just looking for en enjoyable action flick, you'll find it hear. You don't really get to delve that deep into Domino Harvey as a character, but for what it is, it is entertaining.

Mickey Rourke follows up his performance as Marv in Sin City with another calm, cool role that is for me, the highlight of the film. I definitely cared about Ed a lot more as a character than I did Domino.

Saw this tonight. I personally loved the movie, a) since Mickey fucking Rourke overshadows everyone else in the cast once again and b) because the story was interesting enough to keep me entertained. At first, things kind of fly right by without any real resoning, but as the film approachs the second act you begin to see that yes there is a story somewhere to be found, and it's a pretty fucking good one (unlike what most reviewers would have you believe).

Also: If you get nausiated easily or have seizures, STAY AWAY. I could barely stomach the movie's out of fucking control effects, and thats saying a lot. Much like Man on Fire, Scott's cinematography makes you feel like you're having a bad acid trip just trying to stay focused on what's on the screen in front of you...

Oh, and for anyone wondering, the soundtrack is top-notch. There is music composed by Harry Gregson-Williams (of Metal Gear Solid fame to me) and there are licensed track as well all of which do a good job setting the tone of the movie. It's one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a while.

Just came back from seeing it. While I can understand where the reviews are coming from,
the editing during that final shoot out was blinding
, I loved the movie.

Rourke was indeed awesome and the rest of the cast really shined, but
Tom Waits
really stole the show. I dunno if I should count that as a spoiler but it's a great surprise for fans that don't know he's in it.

The score and licensed soundtrack were also awesome. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to head on over to Amazon and see what's on the soundtrack CD, because I must own it.

The only real flaws I found were it was a little long and the editing was overdone, making it a little hard to follow at points, but other than that I really liked it and will probably pick up the DVD.

This movie got hammered in reviews--something like 15% at Rotten Tomatoes. So many fo the reviews described the movie as physically painful in one way or another (words like "excruciating" and "damaging" kept coming up) that I figured I'd wait for video, if I see it at all. (I say this as someone who actually likes Tony Scott's movies--some of them, anyway. I liked The Hunger.)

Oh--P.S. MY NAME IS DOMINO HARVEY--I AM A BOUNTY HUNTER: that might be the reason the movie opened at #7 this week. The advertising for this was worse than the advertising for Serenity, which is saying something.

Well i broke down and saw this movie because it was a friends birthday...and let me tell you

Worst movie i've seen since Turtles 3

Let me give you a lapdance to sell out your boy? What THE FUCK!

this movie was like one big ass soundtrack and not a good one at that. The movie jumped around to much and didnt stick with what the fuck they were talking about.

gosh I really wanted to see this, but I couldn't sit through Man on Fire or my eyes would bleed, so 2 1/2 hours of this, even with Keira, I'm gonna have to wait for DVD and watch it in 20 minute spurts with a bucket next to me just in case

The movie was ok, i don't see how people can say it's terrible.
It was even funny at times
When ed was drugged up and running around with socks puppets
They also had a real gang play in the movie
Thanks to Gusmano Cesaretti, Michael Mann's regular collaborator, Tony Scott managed to get on screen real-life gang bangers from 18th Street Gang in East Los Angeles.
The ending had a nice but somewhat predicatable twist. Overall i think it's worth it to see it in the theater, but it won't hurt to get it on DVD.
