Why? You think Halo 3 will finish on earth? Earth is only the beginning : There is still Cortana and the Gravemind to deal with. And they are on High Charity.
All are after the same goal (The Ark, ohhh... another bible reference SO DEEP!!!!111!!) So the fight will finish on Earth.

Ahh, that would have been intesting- but what would the battle have sought to achieve? How would it be climatic? Because (a) they couldn't save Earth in this one, (b) the Ark wasn't supposed to be in this one (other than the mention), and (c) the Covenant have to have a presence on Earth in Halo 3. So I'm still kinda curious as to how it could have provided a "climax" in some way other than uniting the two characters.
Joe Staten has said that three levels were cut from Halo 2. I'm guessing that the game was originally intended to end at the announcement trailer for Halo 3 - the discovery of the Ark. But that's my theory.

But you have as much of an answer as is out there - three levels were cut, they wanted to tell more story and to bring Arby and the Chief together. Certainly that sounds like it could contain a more conclusive ending that Halo 2 ended up with. We may never get more details than that, but I think it's enough.

Yeah, I know it's only the beginning, but it accounts for AT LEAST three more missions. There just doesn't seem to be another logical stopping point for Halo 2 in there. I think Tartarus' defeat and the destruction of the second Halo was a lot more climatic than anything we've seen at the start of Halo 3. (Unless they had a much longer Halo 2 campaign and ended it at the Ark.)

Edit: They cut three levels? OK, now I understand a bit more. I thought people wanted one more mission where the Chief made it to Earth and got to fight a random battle. That just didn't seem like a nice ending to me, but if they could have brought it up to the Ark scene in the announcement trailer, yeah, that would have been better.

Maybe the entire finish in halo3 was supposed to be finished up in halo2. Now its just been extended and fleshed out further to make a bigger game.

Now that I didnt know. So 3 levels, if they want by the same story arc it would have been the discovery of the ark, something the halo2 promotional website seemed to hint at. I remember alot of clues about the arc in africa. I also remember a brute speeder that was revealed on that site and quickly removed, never to return/debut in halo2.

We clearly see in the trailers that Chief and Arby are on a convenant structure speaking to Cortana. If the game begins on Earth, then it will end up on High Charity.

I think the Arc will be activated and then there will be a countdown, but Cortana will be the key to stop the said countdown. But she's now corrupted by the Flood, hence the Marathon reference.

It's all a guess, though. I hope it's even better than that :P

I hope you're right, in a way. I'd love to see more High Charity, but a reenvisioned, more exciting version. Something a little less repetitive, both in architecture and color.

But still, I'm not sure Gravemind is gonna wait for us to come back to visit. I always assumed he was gonna hop on one of the ships that the Flood have hijacked, and make a beeline for Earth.

Ya, and at the end of the third lost level you have a boss fight with Zombie Tartar Sauce.

Ummm... High Charity is ya know... mobile. I always assumed he was just going to ram the thing into Earth.

How close are we to spoilers anyway? Rampant speculation is kinda obnoxious imo.

Somehow I doubt the Flood could "corrupt" an AI. Cortana could be (and probably is) rouge by the end of the game but judging from the Gravemind twist who knows what stupid shit might sneak it's way into this game.

Okay, sheesh now I am
busting out the tags. Cortana has already gone insane IIRC. Something about how AI becomes incredibly unstable after 7 years of use or so. She's already incredibly risk takey as you can see in any of the games.

If anyone from Bungie is reading, (and knows) I really would be interesting in knowing what your guys' ideal conclusion for Halo 2 was. (Assuming that doesn't stray into Halo 3 spoiler territory.)

Having the Master Chief and the Arbiter fight together in the final level of Halo 2 definitely would have added a climatic ending stretch to Halo 2 and made a perfect bridge towards Halo 3 but...What happens, happens. 10 days!

Probably already been mentioned, but just in case, Gamestop is giving 30% extra credit for any trade-ins toward a Halo 3 purchase. If you haven't paid your copy off yet, and you have some stuff you want to offload (*cough* Crackdown), now would be the time.

I'm only guessing on the "corruption" part, but judging from every Halo 3 trailers, we see Cortana crying or go completely nut.

In Marathon, an AI was corrupted and tried to stop you from achieving your goal.

You fool, that's from the song and dance number half way through.

Cortana performs Lady Marmalade for the Gravemind while the Chief sneaks round and stickies him in the back.

THAT SKETCH IS AMAZING. Damn.

Yeah, I definitely see Cortana going crazy. She
started to show a lot of suspicious signs
in Halo: First Strike. And then with Gravemind getting his grimy tentacles around her... She's got a lot to cope with.

EDIT: And then there's the entirely seperate possibility that Cortana WANTS to go crazy. Or, rather, that she'll intentionally, willfully go against the Chief and humanity for... some kind of gain. Power? Knowledge? Spiritual fulfillment?

I like Crackdown :(

I do have a few things I plan on trading in for this though, just because it wouldn't be worth the ebay/etc hassle for them.

I'm sure this is older than my Grandma, but I found a banner that linked to this while looking at a review for Skate on gamesradar.com:

Some Walmarts are opening at 12:01 am, giving out Halo 3 dog tags and having checkout lines just for Halo 3.
I'm sure as fuck not going to Walmart at midnight and walking out with something worth more than my pumas.

Whenever I think Walmart, I think of this cartoon.

I've only been to Wallyworld a few times out of desperation (and being in Mississippi at the time, there was no where else to shop) but I could feel my IQ lowering as I crossed the threshold.

I want to upgrade to an Elite here soon, but I want the Falcon build w/ the 65nm chips. Anyone heard weather those are out yet? I want the optimum H3 experience. :D

11 Mike Foxtrot days.

i'm back after a lengthy hiatus, what did i miss?

i hear halo 3 has zombies in it.
