The Official "It's Freakin' Hard!" Thread

Metroid Prime and the last 2 bosses is incredibly hard!
What. Metroid Prime is not an easy game by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not "freaking hard" - not even close.

Going back a few generation, Target Earth for the Genesis. Now, back in the day, I was pretty friggin' good at "hard" 16 bit games. I busted through Super Ghouls & Ghosts. I made mince-meat of Gaiares. But Target Earth was, to me, IMPOSSIBLE. Maybe I just couldn't grasp the correct strategies. But it was the only game in history where I used a cheat or code to see the end: suspiciously enough, the game had a rather easy to use invincibility code.

the fucking RC plane mission of the guy named Zero in San fierro (GTASA). It took me forever to beat it. I'm pretty sure most people stopped playing the game there.

I certainly did. What a waste for me as well. I never did get to see Las Venturas....

...Reward.and.Punishment...

Ikaruga
Gradius 3 and 4
Zelda 2 (AoL)
Breath of fire DQ (first playthrough)
POKEMON FUCKING STADIUM- there were these cups that were designed to be easy, only low leveled pokemon allowed. The problem was, that you had to face pokemon who had moves that they can only possibly learn at much higher levels. So that prettymuch gave you about 1/3 the power, and you had to face like 8 teams in a row.

Chopper Command (2600): The first two waves were easy enough, but by the third wave, it just got impossible. The enemies move 3x your speed and the bombs they shot were insta-death.

Master Blaster (NES): Long game, no save, no shortcuts, short lifebar, tough gameplay. Need I say more?

Fatal Rewind (Genesis): Maybe I just needed to spend more time on it, but man, did this one kick my ass. In so many unfun ways. One of the few games I've regretted buying.

I remember back in the days when I use to play and complete "Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo" winning every single round with a perfect without losing one. Now I can't even complete the game without struggling like no tomorrow and losing a few credits.

Damn, was I THAT good on 2D games back then?!

Just about any Battletoads. Was never able to beat any of them. Got to the last level of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, though.

Contra Hard Corps for the Sega Genesis was one mother of a challenge. Many whined about Contra 3: Alien Wars on the SNES, but Hard Corps was of the game that truly tested the limits of my patience. (I thought Aline Wars was a walk in te park). I'm the only person I know of that beat the game with all the characters on all the branching paths. I don't think I could do it again today without dedicating months to practice. That was back when I had lots of time to burn. Still one of my favorite games in the series.

Battletoads is a new one. The third level is always there just to eat up your lives so you barely have any left for the next few levels. The original GameBoy one isn't so bad since the "speed" section isn't all that difficult.

MK2 had a major problem with AI cheating. Could throw you at insane distances.

And SFII Hyper Fighting's AI is just insane. On EASIEST difficulty (think about that, there's normal, easy-normal, easy THEN easiest difficulty levels!) it's hard to win, let alone not lose a single round (so you can face Akuma).

Ghosts 'n' Goblins is the epitome of hard games. Some of the NES games were ridicilous. Section Z is another one.

The last boss battles, especially the absolute final one, was friggin hard.

The hardest game I played recently is Dodonpachi daioujou...... Even on default settings, this game gets totally ridiculous as soon as you get to the first boss.

...also battletoads on NES. I think that's what I would call an exponential difficulty curve...

I would say Gaiden and Super Ghouls N' Ghosts are the toughest I have dealt with. Of recent games, I think Viewtiful Joe and Maximo were up there. I don't understand why the latest Gaiden is considered so challenging.

I once finished Ninja Gaiden 1 on NES without losing a life.

Yeah I know, it seems impossible and I can't repeat this feat but at the time, NG was the only game I had and played so at one point, you know it all. :lol

Blaster Master and Double Dragon 3 were definitely two of the toughest games on the NES.

DD2 was a fucking cakewalk. DD3 was an unexpected kick to the nuts. I managed to get to the last boss in DD3, but it was only a rental and after hours and hours and hours of going through all the levels, making notable progress with each subsequent run, I had to call it quits.

As for Blaster Master, I made it to the 8th level on a couple of occasions, but never did beat the game. Very frustrating. I may have to try to complete it in the future.

Unfortunately, I haven't touched either game in over 13 years, so I undoubtedly suck beyond belief now.

Ninja Gaiden wasn't THAT hard....

The HURRICANE PACKS were freakin' hard.

Yeah, the "default" game is ok, not that tough really if you're patient. Even the 1st meeting w/ Alma only took me about 3 attempts before she went down and none of the other bosses really bothered me all that much (the end trio of bosses are a joke). The hardest shit for me were those rooms where if you kill the seemingly neverending wave of enemies you get a hidden item.

The Hurricane packs are insane though, especially #2.

Ah, Section Z. How much did I hate you and your FUCKING WARPS! "Where the hell am I? Haven't I been here before? Oh shit!" Then Game Over.

And please, let us never mention G&G again. The 1st two in the series are hard but not impossible. But Super G&G. Well, let's just say that after recovering from the shock of having to finish it twice, me and my friends left on the SNES for 2 weeks straight in hopes of passing that one stage where you're ascending a castle and the screen is scrolling/spiralling upwards as you climb up each platform. We never passed it. *Cries in shame*

F-Zero GX. Help me ! I'm stuck in the FOURTH or so Story-mode level. With the biker-gang, I've to crush their boss but I can't even come really near to him nor crush him

That sounds like in Street Fighter 2 for SNES when I would jack up the difficulty to 7 stars and win without having any damage in any round. Of course Chun Li's med. punch and throw made this pretty easy. Maybe beating Contra III only dying twice is my favorite accomplishment.

I should say, that the Hurricane Pack makes Gaiden super hard. But alot of people bitch about it being hard without it, and I just think you have to be patient.

Double Dragon 3!!!

Man no one that I know has beaten this game NO ONE.

Honestly I finished that game in two days back when it came out. I remember using one move over and over, some kind of cyclone kick or roundhouse or something.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (SNES) I remember the elation at just getting to the third level. I never did beat the game, even using cheats. I never did finish the original Ghosts 'n Goblins either. But I did finish both Maximos with 100% completion.

Edit: Didn't read the entire thread.

Ho.Ly. Shit. I have never heard of anything like that before. i don't know if I should laugh at the fact that you did that, or tip my hat at the dedication.

I think I'm gonna make some gameplay movies of some of these nes games to show that its possible without cheating.

Well Captain Planet on the NES is the only game I ever played where I seriously could not beat the first level.

But this gen, Ikaruga, Super Monkey Ball and F-Zero GX

no kidding. How about Ikari warriors? Without cheating ABBA :P

In my 20 years of gaming I've never been more frustrated by a game more than I was with ...

I could never get past the first level with the damn alligators in the water. This game was impossible. I'd be interested to see if any of you GAFers managed to beat Konami's worst game on the NES.
