The "Official" Japanese PSP Launch Thread (NSF56k)

Ok, I have a question that I thought about now that the US PSP got a price and date. Say I have my import PSP with the US copy of Twisted Metal, and someone has the US PSP with the same game. Can we play wirelessly without a problem, or is there some sort of difference in the protocols?
Shouldn't be a problem, as they both use the same protocol, and more importantly, the JP PSP is fully compatible with the frequencies of 802.11b approved for use in the US.

Oh and for first timers on the PSP here are more "tips":

- hold the music button for a few seconds to mute the PSP and hit it again to unmute.

- hold the brightness button for a few seconds to turn the screen off instantly. (great when you want to play mp3s, turn it off just before you put the system in hold mode)

- when your PSP is plugged in to charge, you can access the 4th Brightness level (awesome) and if you leave it there and go into sleep mode only, even when unplugged it'll be in that brightness setting. Sucks for battery life though.

Anyway great to hear you have no dead pixels, hope you're enjoying the system! :D

It's so amazing that it defies description. How in the hell can I be holding something this amazing in 2004? I just don't get it.

Unfortunately my mem stick is back home (i'm in uni), damn I'm jonesin for some mem stick goodness. Thank god I'm going back home tomorrow.

Another Q, would it be possible to play multi w/ my import copy of Lumines vs. a domestic copy?
Most likely not.... however I do have a interesting story:

I had an instance with my import copy Super Street Fighter II X Revival and the domestic copy of Super Street Fighter II: Turbo Revival. I went into linkup mode and with 2 gbas and the linkup cable. There were times were we could make the connection but 90% of the time it wouldn't work.

Weird, I hope it works personally...I don't want to have to rebuy the game again.

Anyone want to buy mine?

Mofo's PSP

I'm sad to let it go. It's in perfect condition and no dead pixels. Moving this week and need the cash :(

Again, the system is in perfect condition and is ready to play! Also this is one of the launch units that has the Sharp LCD screen, not the cheap replacement Samsung screen that Sony ships now.

nice one, people will fall for it ! :D

Wonder if Lumines will be altered/modified/improved in any way. Mizuguchi seemed to indicate the possibility of polishing up a few rough edges for the American release in that Tokyopia interview.

Is ther any way to force the system to go the XMB from a dead start? The game starts automatically everytime...
Have the game door ejected when booting up if you shutdown the PSP instead of putting it in sleepmode.

unfortunately, defensor is correct. that's exactly what i do. sony should have made a shortcut to doing so. oh well.

Another Q, would it be possible to play multi w/ my import copy of Lumines vs. a domestic copy?

Yeah, unfortunately links are usually designed for just the same soft, and changes to the international version -- however slight -- change the code. There are times where you can program a game to recognize other versions (like in POKEMON), but you have to specifically design for that, it doesn't automatically work. And since most games aren't designed tor recognize multiple software IDs, devs usually don't go back and do it.

Okay... I think there may be something to the square button problem now... :(.

When I'm playing Dynasty Warriors, it seems like a lot of my combos get messed up because not every press is registering with the game. The button is squeaking like crazy when I'm in the middle of a heated battle and it seems like there's a lot more lateral motion in the button than with the other 3.

This is the first game to actually use the button where it has to be pressed rapidly. Have you guys had any similar problems with Dynasty Warriors?

I was told by Mizuguchi's boss that they're planning on changing the game for the domestic release. They're also debating whether or not they should get English versions of the songs sung in Japanese.

Personally, the PSP just doesn't do it for me. Handheld gaming pales so much in comparison to the latest consoles. I just don't spend enough time on the road to warrant them. The PSP looks nice, but it also looks easy to break. Sure hope its not.

Hey I hope it isn't too much to ask for but can you PSP fans make a new thread for the American launch with all sorts of these interesting tidbits?

Sorry for the inconvenience but having a nice concrete faq on the first page is a lot easier than shuffling through 67 (!) pages.

Anyways keep it up guys, I'm getting more excited for launch day! Awesome news for Lumines!

Erm, songs sung in Japanese? The only Japanese song is Lights which is the final level skin. ^^;

Please elaborate on the changes if you can. I may have to import if I don't like the changes.

This doesn't seem to work.

When I do as described, the screen goes back to regular 3rd brightness setting after I switch it on from sleep mode. You can even see that when you re-plug the power cord while the PSP is working, the screen will go to the 4th brightness level, as it has memorized that it was the brightness you used while charging.

Wow, you're right. I always thought the brightness stayed the same (hard to tell without a comparison) because it was really bright, but when I tested it like you said, it definitely drops when you remove the AC and it brightens against when you plug the AC back in! I guess that means my assumption that it was a battery killer means that brightness 3 is pretty harsh on the battery too. No wonder brightness 4 is disabled without AC. ^^;

Q: Can you listen to Mp3s and watch images (read: read manga) at the same time?

Afraid not, sorry. A firmware update could fix this if Sony decide to release one for this particular issue.

They should definatly fix so that you can have background music (controlled by remote only) while doing anything else (except watch video) at the same time. Sony! You reading this!? :lol

Man, I am so angry

UPS lost my fucking memory stick. They ran a tracer now but apparently it will take up to 7-8 days to determine whether they can find it at all. #_)%@_)%(#@

I have been waiting SO LONG to be able to watch something on my PSP other than FF7AC trailers :(

Man that sucks. Hope they find it. Packages going missing = hell. :(

I'm actually curious why Sony did this for 4th brightness level - the effect of B4 on the battery actually isn't so bad(measured it on the kit), it's pretty much the same as going from B1->B2, or B2->B3.

Or is there some purpose to "powersupply only" brightness modes that I'm not aware off on portable devices? :P

Since the brightness drops once you remove the AC, I'm starting to think there's a minor possibility that the battery pack just isn't pumping enough juice into the system to allow for the 4th brightness setting. Higher brightness = more power, it's not just about battery depletion but maybe the 3rd level is as far as it can go powered by battery but once you plug in an adapter it offers more juice and hence and go higher? Just a guess.

Sorry, I didn't pursue the question too much. And at the time I didn't know there was only one song sung in Japanese. Just relaying what he said.

They were really pressed for time to get Lumines out by the PSP launch date and he commented that they hope to use the extra time to beef up the game a bit for the U.S. launch. No specifics were mentioned though.

Just backing you up on this. The CEO of Q was a really nice guy btw.

All they need is the option to restart the level in the option menu within games, and an option menu asking if you want to retry when doing puzzle mode after you fail.

Failing a puzzle, then being forced to watch the main menu load, then selecting the puzzle and watching it load to only fail again is retarded. :lol

Crap, the square button is messed up :(

I figured out that you can reconfigure the controls in Dynasty Warriors so I switched up circle to be the attack and square the special attack. Now I have no control problems with the attack chains anymore.

I hope all the games coming out make sure that you don't have to press the square button rapidly, or else it isn't going to work too well :|

Are they going to release popular movies in UMD now??
Also can any other devices play UMDs?

1. Probably, no word on price yet. I would expect to see Sony pictures movies come out on UMD first, but who knows.

2. Nothing except the PSP can play UMDs right now, and I haven't heard of anything announced that can either.

Not just you, there's something wrong with the Square button on mine too. It works to be sure, but the response time is pretty bad for rapid taps :(

I'm pretty sure that this is an issue with all PSP's.

See Kutaragi was right! Developers and gamers just have to ADAPT to his PERFECT DESIGN! You got a headstart already it seems! :lol :lol :lol :lol

It's a flawed design, but there isn't much they can do about it now. Ah well.

Finally! At least, PSP it's mine.

I nearly bought it for 550 dolars + taxes at launch, then i had the chance to bought it for 350$, but just some weeks and it's mine for the right price 250 Euros Value Pack + Ridge Racers and nothing about taxes or anything else. And it comes with no dead pixels at the moment, flawless (not that I worry too much about it)

Now I´m happy with my decission but it was a pain for me to see people on this thread so enthusiastic about it while I couldn´t buy it :) Certainly looks as a device from the future, that was a given in the E3 and now I have all the time in the world to look to it I can subscribe it.

Well, it´s a complete beauty and Ridge Racers looks gorgeus. Next one, Lumines and maybe Vampire. The DS turn will be in some weeks with the euopean launch.

(Sorry to the mods about posting in this thread, hope it´s not a problem, I was in the middle of the forum-a ton when PSP was released and I really wanted to post on it when I had my system).

Congrats, enjoy the system.

They need to come up with something to solve the square button responsiveness issue. That's really friggin' bad that they left it like that.

I haven't had any qualms with it, but then again, the games I've been playing don't make extensive use of the square button.
