Bryant is very, very aware of who is guarding him. When Prince was in and guarding him he was very cautious with his shots and looked to pass. As soon as Prince goes to the bench Bryant looks to score. Hmmm....

The hell are lakers doing tonight?

TAYSHAUN! I forgive you for being a Magic killer if you can help knock out the Lakers. The Pistons defense is stifling.

The kid from Compton comes to play when it matters most. You can count on that.

WHOOO PISTONS :D

I like the surprise of the Pistons winning, but in all honesty, I don't care who wins. That said, it was a pretty dull game. :(

I thought the Pistons couldn't score? I thought they'd get swept? And just think, Rip barely scored.

Go Pistons!

I can't wait to hear how this is justified by everybody tomorrow morning.

The pistons were given no fucking chance coming into this game, and they just beat the Lakers down in game one in LA.

Please, Loki, spare me the "not the best player in the league" rants. I've seen enough of them to realize that your impressions of ANY Lakers player is jaded and not grounded in what most normal people would call "reality". Rip Hamilton will not score more than 15pts a game with Kobe defending him.

I'm predicting 33/7/7 tonight by Kobe. Detroit hasn't had to face a guard of Kobe's caliber yet in the playoffs...

...their day of reckoning is nigh.

haha! Too bad defending Hamilton had nothing to do with this game.

I didn't bother to watch (partly cause of the Sopranos, partly cause I don't give a damn since I'm not going to be able see the whole series through anyway). The Pistons won? :lol

Sweet. I still can't imagine the Lakers losing this series, but I would love to see the Pistons win just for the hilarity of the fallout.

25/4/4 on 37% shooting (10-27)

Played 47 minutes, too, and that's all he managed. Sucks to be you. ;) :P

Pistons sweep Lakers! Kobe cries on Shaq's shoulder! Malone retires a loser!

It isn't like Kobe played badly. Sure, his shooting was poor but he played the best defensive team in the league. He and Shaq put up the numbers that they can be expected to. It was everybody else that didn't do a thing to help the cause.

yes dude! i love it!

what stood out to me most in this game was the lack of ANY kind of run by the lakers. i never saw them make a big surge, the crowd never got into it, the pistons controlled this game and controlled the lakers.

all this DESPITE rip hurting his team more than helping
all this DESPITE the pistons missing about 5-8 layups
all this DESPITE the pistons missing 10+ free throws
all this DESPITE the lakers getting about 20 second chance points

i dont think the pistons will sweep the series, no way. but if the lakers thought they would come in a bully the pistons, they were sorely mistaken. they just got their first punch to the noggin tonight. this series is going to be a dog fight ladies, so get ready... GO PISTONS!

Great victory for the good guys! Kolby and Shrek went for near 60 and still got that ass TAPPED! I said before Billups was going off in this one and he started it off tonight. I bet the Pistons don't get ANY credit from the mofo's predicting the Stones to roll over. I said it would be Detroit in 5 or 6 and I've seen NOTHING in the playoffs to change my mind. Sorry but The Ogre dominating all over Yao, RASHO, Ervin fuckin Johnson, and Kandi-ass does NOT impress me.

I really like the chances of Detroit in this series. Better than any team in the East. Yes, better than Indiana IMO. But I do think Indiana is the better team. Just not the better team against the Lakers.

indiana would have probably been slaughtered in this series... although, with the way they play defense, they may have stolen one or two. but the pistons have a better defense AND have a few guys on offense who can really hurt you. infact, more than a few. hamilton, billups, prince, williamson, okur and rasheed wallace are ALL guys who are legit scorers. not necessarily 20 pt per game guys night in and night out, but guys who can put up 20 on any given night.

good times fellas!

I've always said that if the Pistons scorers are actually doing damage, then they have a chance to make it a series. It's just usually difficult to do that against the Laker defense-- but Detroit showed me something tonight. The analysts were quick to point out LA's lackluster performance with the caveat that they "weren't taking anything away from Detroit", which has to be the most backhanded compliment ever. ;)

It'll take Detroit winning at least another game before the media start giving them any credit. I couldn't BELIEVE that Ben Wallace was hitting his jumpers today, though. And, like I said, the Lakers made it a point to help Kobe guard Hamilton, as every time Rip came off a screen and Kobe was trailing, Shaq would show and the next defender over on the perimeter would also come over. Sure, if you're gonna do that all series just to make Kobe look like an all-world defender, then fine-- but it's gonna throw off the rest of your defensive rotations imo. We'll see how it plays out tuesday evening. :)

And if Prince can keep doing the job on Kobe that he did tonight, Detroit is in a GREAT position for the series. Kobe's struggle to get good looks against him was noticeable, so much so that he had to go to the pump fake on the fadeaway to draw the foul in the 4th quarter-- that's how you can tell when he's frustrated and can't locate a shot. He did it a few times against Hassell last series also. But Kobe'll get his before the series is out. I doubt he'll get that Finals MVP that some people seem to think he'll get, though.

Shaq is just unguardable, however-- they have no answers for him.

Rip needs to be more aggressive in using the screens, Billups has to be more aggressive on the pick and rolls (a few times Shaq stepped waaaay out on the floor to help-- Billups should've blown right around him for the layup but didn't), and they have to stop giving up so many offensive rebounds, which was really the only reason the game was as close as it was. They had better come ready to play next game, though, as LA is gonna come out blasting in the first half, mark my words.

One thing I really liked was that Larry Brown decided not to double Shaq in the 4th. He learned from the Lakers post season that the open shooters have killed teams, he pretty much said tonight that Shaq or Kobe will beat them, not Rush, Fisher, or George.

Hamilton - "You never take me out anymore!"

Billups - "What woman?!"

capt.las11906070342.nba_finals_las119.jpg

WTF! Did Rip watch The Ring tape or something?

capt.las12406070415.nba_finals_las124.jpg

Um...ok. Laker fans are weird.

"It's a good shot!"

"Still good!"

"Ok...I may be forcing it now."

Marqus Young of Detroit covers his ears as people boo him while he stands, wearing a Los Angeles Lakers jersey, in front of the Spirit of Detroit statue, outfitted with a large Detroit Pistons jersey, in Detroit, Sunday, June 6, 2004.

I've found Konex!

That was a thing of sweetness. All that sloppy play and they still whoop 'em. See the power of prayer? That said, the Lakers have a way of not showing up for anything at the beginning. I hope the Pistons can continue to show the weakness of the 2 man army alone.

I hate Kobe, but you have to recognize his defense. That guy is always at the ball.

PRINCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that was a totally pathetic performance... sometimes its just way too frustrating to be a laker fan, especially this season.

come on people let's get back to earth. the lakers will still take this series just maybe in 6 instead of 5.

If Detroit can win Game 2, then they have a 3 game home court advantage, so it's looking pretty good for them.

That said, there were moments in the game where even with a 6-8 point lead they were taking some pretty bad shots at the basket. Good thing their defense was good.

Did anybody hear Doc Rivers slamming Grant Hill last night? He said something about having a player on the Pistons on his team for a year 'but he never put on a uniform' then he followed that up by saying 'I've got a lot of experience with that.' Suck it down, Grant Hill!

Anyway, we all remember what happened the last time Larry Brown won game 1 against the Lakers right? :P

Agreed. Shaq and Kobe will get their 25-35 a game, but it doesn't matter if the rest of the team has 15 pts TOTAL. Great strategy by Brown.

What? Sorry, but I don't see in any way shape or form how one could say the Pacers are a better team than the Pistons when they just lost a series to Detroit in the East Finals. Not to mention that Indiana, who had the best home record in the season, had lost 2 of the games (and almost 3) to Detroit at Conseco Fieldhouse. The Pacers pretty much got owned on their own home floor throughout the series.

For the person who previously said the Lakers bench always shows up? re: last night.

Disgusting.

Malone missing WIDE-OPEN jumpers. Payton... non-existent... and the bench? What bench? Coach better crack the f'n whip otherwise this series'll end in 4-5 and not with a Lakers championship at the end...

<Rush> What the hell?! Why is this dude following me!

<Fisher> This sucks ass dude, I can't shoot my ugly shot with this guy in my face!

<George> I LOVE BEING A TURTLE!

J O'Neal is hurt. And they have Artest, though very talented, just a guy that couldn't get his head in gear when it matters. And who preety much cost the Pacers a trip to the Finals.

But just to clear up, I'm not a Pacers fan at all. I'm a Raps fans actually. T_T

larry brown has to be carefull. he has been here b4...with the sixers...3 seasons ago. winning game 1 is nothing if u can not follow it up.

i was pissed at LB for leaving like he did and the things he said when he left but im rooting for the old fool and his team...anything against the lakers.

Yep. And another thing is that Rasheed barely played in the first half because of foul troble. If the Pistons had him on the floor longer and cleaned up all those missed layups and free throws, they would've opened the lead up to a larger margin earlier in the game.
