***The Official NES Appreciation Thread***

if anyone wants to get rid of any complet nes games pm a list and well work something out. i usually will pay pretty high for lots of games that i dont have

Amazing system. I remember being such a die hard atari fan and being convinced nothing "Nintendo" could show would get me to forget about Joust and River Raid. Then I saw Super Mario Brothers and after much better I got the Deluxe System for my birthday with that worthless robot (it looked awesome on the box!). So many games we still play today seemed to originate on the NES: mario, final fantasy, metal gear, castlevania, metroid, etc.

I can't name my favorite games because they are too numerous to mention, but this is still one of my most played systems mainly because of how short the games are. You can shoot through Ninja Gaiden 2 (bloody awesome experience) in 20-30 minutes if you are good.

I don't like how unreliable my old system has become though. :(

This game is the origin of my nick.

One last thing, it is strange that even though the NES's music can't compare to any music since then, but why are so many NES songs stuck in my head? That bionic commando theme is stuck in my head after finding that screenshot. Music in games is so much better today and yet it is rarely memorable.

P.S. We need some Master System love too. Even though only 8 other people had one in the US, it had some kickass games and also had a lot of firsts (at least for me).

The Guardian Legend

Speaking of the NES, how many of you have had a NES die on you?

I could have swore that a Rambo cartridge killed my NES and that of my best friend at the time. Of course it was purely unscientific and we were like 11 at the time, but I swear that no game would even load up after we finished Rambo. We both ended up sending our systems into Nintendo where they fixed them (not for free back then) and it was good to go for another year before it needed to be replaced again. :(

It's a great vertical shooter for the NES developed by Compile(creators of Puyo Puyo and...the Guardian Legend).

I personally think it's the best Shooter for the NES.

I've had the connectors inside the NES come loose, but I've never had an NES aboslutely stop working on me.

I just pop my NES open and squeeze the connectors back into place with a pair of tweasers. That usually fixes any 'blinking' NES.

sounds like you need to invest in a toploader bionic, if thats a little steep for you buy a neofami from ebay for like 35 bucks. either way youll never blow your carts again and theyll work the first time everytime

Cool. I'm gonna give it a go. ;)

Good advice. If you're looking for a good price on a top loader, just scour Ebay for NES system auctions that don't contain the words 'Top' or 'loader'. Sometimes people auctioning old games don't know what they have and they'll simply describe it as "Nintendo system" or "Original NES". Then, when you find a good deal on one, wait til the last minute, snipe it, and you know the rest.

Oh i know i won a toploader listed under "Weird NSE" spelling was actually NSE for 27 dollars shipped. one of my ultiamate nes wins. i also won tmnt tournament fighters complete for 15 bucks last week and the week after it sold for 120. my next goal is to win a sub $50 copy of bubble bobble 2 complete. but i doubt that will ever happen. actually the best deal i ever found was dragon warriors 1-4 at a local ma and pop video store all complete for 30 bucks total.

Exactly. I shouldn't be giving out my Ebay secrets, but I probably am done collecting NES games for a little while.(I'm collecting Megadrive/CD stuff at the moment)

another good tip is to type in "Nintendo" -NES. Most people who look for NES stuff type in 'NES' in the search bank. But not everybody calls it that. :)

ive come to realize tha most of the stuff i need is gonna cost an arm and a leg now. i mainly need the color dreams, ave, and the panesion games complete now. i have the maxi 15 action 52 and caltron in boxes, but the rest is just so expensive. 500 each for bubble bath babes hot slots and peek a boo poker. i dont know if i can bring myself to buying them

Never played or even seen one. Back in those days it was all about C64. Only kids and lamers played on consoles. :lol

I scored a Flinstones Surprise at Dinosaur Peak practically for free, it was part of a lot but no one noticed cause the picture was small and it was just listed it as Flintstones :D

Damn you. I've been looking for that game for years.

I was gonna post this in one of the other NES appreciation threads, until I realized this was the official post. I think it was the asterisks that really sold me.

I gotta say, one of my all time favorites is Blaster Master. Killer music man. I miss the days when the simplicity of sound hardware made good composition so crucial. The ability to get out of your machine, and even do seperate on foot levels with boss fights and upgrades omg!

I love that game! :P

thats an amazing feat considering it had a dominating hold of the video game industry for at least 5 years not to mention the best selling console game of all time

try finding the flinstones game in box with instructions. considering it was a limitesd release for blockbusters its almost impossible. nes collecting is one of the most addicting and fun hobbies you can have. theres no look like the one a friend gives you when he sees 400 complete nes games and then they ask you if they can unseal a game so they can play.

Once in a blue moon, I'll find a complete copy of it. Always goes for over a hundred dollars.

yeah no doubt about that. even games like rescue rangers 2 and ducktales 2 are goin for about 80-100 complete now. granted they are rare, but nowhere near that of flintstones.

That's just rediculous. But not as bad as sealed games. Christ, just today a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 went for over 70 dollars. Copies of Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, and yes, Super Mario Bros. go for over 300 bucks! You're paying 300 dollars for SUPER MARIO BROS., people! A game you could buy used at Funco Land for ten cents a couple years ago.

BTW, a little fun fact - In 1997, if you found a copy of Stadium Events at Funco Land, guess how much it would have cost you.

If you guessed 30 cents, you're right!

i saw donkey kong 3 sealed go for $1100 last month. i only have about 20 sealed games, but only 2-3 are common so if i were to start selling id start with those. i could easily make 2 grand off of those alone

I don't own any sealed games, but I noticed that they sell for a lot more if you spread them apart.(Like, make sure they don't all end within an hour of each other)

My guess is, it's the same small group of NES collectors buying these things, and even they're working on a limited budget.

$1100? There's no word to describe that.

But I guess that's not as bad as that copy of Super Metroid that went for over 900 bucks a few months ago.

I got Hot Slots for $5 at a pawn shop in 1996, so eat it!

And while I'm posting where all these collectors are, I should note that I'm looking for old issues of Game Players and EGM. PM me.

I've got a ton of old Game Players magazines from 1994-1998. I've got a bunch of old EGMs from around the same time span, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to let go of those.

the best periphal for the system was by far the konami laserscope. i acquired one recently and it as an absolute comdey watching somebody play a game with this thing on their head. it is huge

FAVORITE NES GAMES:

River City Ransom
Mother
Wizards and warriors
StarTropics
Super Mario 2 (By far the best Mario game)
Mike tyson's punchout
Maniac Mansion (One of the best feeling Ive gotten completing a game)

NES Acquisition Story
Basically my dad fixed it so I could take over for the neighborhood paperboy while he was hurt with a broken leg. He was 16... I was 8. So for a month I had to get up at 5am, deliver papers, then go to catholic school (WOOOOOO). I finally got my NES and a copy of Mike Tyson's punchout. It started my lifelong love of dodging religion.

It was a great system....in it's time. Super Mario Bros, Mike Tyson's Punchout and Rad Racer are the only three games I can stand to play these days without getting to tears. SNES is as far back as I can go currently.

~daaaamn right. My favorite puzzle game.

Other forgotten gems:

Kirby's Adventure
possibly the swan song of HAL's golden age. Dammit Iwata, you're in control now, restore Lolo as a prime puzzle IP and not as a casual Kirby villain (although strangely Kirby was a villain in Link's Awakening...!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The original is an awesome example of innovative gameplay design that I'm kind of surprised has never resurfaced. I mean, the NES sequels are fun, but play interchangeably with TMNT4 on the SNES.

BASEWARS
It's baseball...with robot players, money, upgradeable/changeable parts, and as the title suggests, it's never as simple as just running to base.

Metal Gear
Okay, it's nothing compared to the MSX game. The localization is comical. But it's still fun to play for what it is.

Ultima: Quest of the Avatar
The only game in the series I've really got into. It's this weird mix of the PC game and typical console RPGs, with a focus on the runes of virtue (ie: are you going to rob that blind shopkeeper...oh so tempting!)

Dragon Warrior 1-4
IV has obviously aged the best, but there is still something great about all four of the games when it comes to RPGs.

M.U.L.E.
A multi-platform classic that is still a lot of fun on the NES. Futuristic multiplayer mine prospecting...well, you just have to play it to understand.

Tetris
Take your pick; most people consider Tengen's version to be the most complete, but even Nintendo's still has some charm.

TECMO BOWL / SUPER BOWL
Personally, I don't go for this crazy sim stuff you see today. But Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl are easy, fun football games

Guerilla War
Back in the day (to the uninformed), it was simply a fun (and thankfully infinite continue) two player overhead shoot-em-up with powerups, tanks, and hostages. Now, it's basically a fun and hilarious rendition of the cuban revolution (really folks, P1 is Guevara, P2 is Castro)

Mother / Gradius II / Final Fantasy IIIj
All are games that never saw american release, but they probably should have. Mother AKA Earthbound Zero is just what you might expect on the RPG front, while Gradius II is basically responsible for the series' reputation. Four options, sometimes 3 or more bosses in a row, and flicker/slowdown like you wouldn't believe. FF3j was mentioned once in the thread and now planned for a DS remake. It's got moogles, the fat chocobo, multiple airship types, a ton of character classes, graphics you might recognize from FF4, and even most of the summon spells recognized today.

Honorable mention to the casino and fishing games (probably a version of black bass, but it's been too long to recall exactly) that were a lot of fun at the time but escape recollection.

Wow two pages and no mention of the three most enjoyable baseball games EVER!
