The "Official" Nintendo DS Launch Thread (NSF56k)

got mine yesterday with Mario and Feel the Magic. Liking it so far. no dead pixels.

Analog control in mario and Metroid pretty good. Keeping the thumbstrap on the tip of my thumb isn't easy, so hopefully someone will come out with a thimble type thing soon.

I'd have liked a sensitivity option in metroid - the mouselook was too slow for me, so I had to reset my thumb more than I'd have liked. Other than that its fun.

The control in Mario is fine, but I do tend to drift a little. I'd like something that prevented my character from stopping instantly when I'm resetting my thumb position - maybe a button that keeps them running, don't really know.

Haven't played feel the magic yet. I have wario ware on order so hopefully that'll be here by next week.

Sound is fantastic. I'm going to try Minish Cap later.

The absolute BEST way to play Metroid is with the Stylus, not the thumbstrap. Your thumb has a limited range of movement and like you said the controls are not sensitive enough for it. But with the stylus they are perfect. I like it even better than dual Analog with Halo 2. The only thing, is you have to learn how to balance the right side of the unit in the palm of your right hand while using the stylus and you should be good to go. :)

But the question I have now that all of you have had the system for awhile, is it worth a purchase now or should I wait until a bundle with a few games is made available ?

I was honestly really close to buying one today, with mario and feel the magic. I played a freinds a few days back and it left an impression on me but in some ways I don't really have alot of money to blow on something like this. I do get paid on friday however....

To buy or not to buy that is the question...

I'd wait. Whenever the PSP is released, which will only be a few months, I foresee Nintendo dropping the price of the DS. By then, some good games should be out by then. If you want a handheld fix, there are a couple games coming out next year on the GBA like Zelda and Mother 3 (god willing).

I would tell you to go ahead and get it. Super Mario DS is so fun that I've stopped playing console games. Halo 2 hasn't been played even once since I've gotten the DS. Just started playing my Xbox again today because I got a new Demo disc, after Conker, it's back to playing the DS. :) One thing about it, is I can play this at work during breaks, or just lay in the bed and get a star or two before I go to sleep. Not to mention all my SP games look fantastic on it. I say don't wait, you only live once, go ahead and get it.

If you can find one, and you can afford it, just buy it. Sell or trade your SP unless you play lots of multiplayer/GC link up/GBC games.

Minish cap looks and sounds gorgeous. I honestly never expected a handheld to sound this good. PSP is going to have to go some to top this (and I might just pass out)

I'll try stylus mode, but I was avoiding it due to comments on here. Oh well. Propping is no problem, as I kind of have to do that anyway with the thumb stylus to get enough room to manoeuvre.

The game looks MUCH better than Mario 64.

Hrm... yes and no. The textures are more detailed, but they're also all pixelated (uuuuugly). The character models are more detailed (check out Bowser!) and the coins are now polygonal, but some of the environments also look like they're made of fewer polys -- this shows up best in Tall Tall Mountain. And it's lacking a lot of the cool special effects from the original, like the foggy clouds (like Lakitu's, which is now a solid object) or the liquid metal (which doesn't look nearly as good).

Don't get me wrong, it looks good, and in places looks better than the original, but in others it looks worse.

Is Wario Ware SaMaRu(sp?) already out? I was going to hold off on a DS, but that would force my hand.

It launches with the DS in Japan on the 2nd. So you should be able to get your hands on it tomorrow, if not today. Or at least be able to import it anywho.

It's SaWaRu, and yeah, it's out -- I bought it today. Impressions later! Minor note though: If the US Super Mario DS box is anything to go by, JP DS boxes are nicer -- they say "Game Card" in the DS card holder bit and have a GBA cart icon inside the box! The US ones don't! Ghetto!

Has anyone found a way to change the default button layout for GBA games? It would be cool if you could switch Y and B on DS with B and A on GBA.

Nope. Unfortunately.

Is there a sleep mode thing with GBA games? I was playing Sonic Advance 2 last night on the DS (for like the first time), and I closed the system, and it just kept on going.. I could hear the music and everything. With Pictochat, Metroid, etc., the system obviously goes into sleep mode.. soo.. umm.. anyone know the answer to my question?

For GBA games they have to have a sleep mode function built in. Some games have it, some don't. But you have to enter the options menu to go to sleep mode. The whole thing of closing the DS and it goes to sleep is just for DS games.

Anyone know who is selling these yet?

Fowler - where'd you pick it up from? you UK based? Always looking for good fast import stores that don't rape you too badly.

I used to go to university in the UK, and used to be raped by a wide variety of importers -- take your pick from CEX (in the old days, anyway), New Age Consoles, X Games or the best of the lot (in terms of general quality and price-raping), CA Games. Now I'm back at home in HK, and reaping the benefits of stores that release games as soon as they get them. So sadly, I can't help you here, but I feel your pain!

As far as I know those are only available in Japan at this point. I hope I'm wrong!

I might have if I wasn't such a lazy git ("but the post office is too faaaaar!"). That and my work schedule totally clashes with midweek game launches -- this is the first time I've been to the shops on a weekday since, um, February I think (Winning Eleven 7 International Box Set!). Ask me again in January when situations at work and my wallet clear up...

Haha, will do. Was a long shot anyway. Besides, I'm the same with being too lazy to post stuff, and that's just within the UK. And there's a post office and postbox just around the corner.

There was a post office about one song away (the iPod Distance Scale) from my flat in Kingston, which was convenient and a nice walk. Here... hrm... actually, I don't think I know where it is...

One song? Like Dream Theater's A Change of Season's long? Or Waco Jesus long?

I just realised I want a Luigi's Mansion on DS.

Top screen: Regular fixed view ala Luigi's Mansion GC.

Bottom screen: First person viewpoint, control of torch via touchscreen.

Thanks for the advice guys, I went and bought one anyway today. Played mario for a couple hours and a little bit of feel the magic. I just decided I couldn't wait , even though it goes against numerous things I've said in the past about waiting on systems.

Thank god the PSP has nothing worthwhile coming at it's launch...

Big request, can't do polys in two windows at once.

It can -- it just can't do too many polys in two windows at once :-P (some of the minigames in Mario 64 DS have polygonal characters on both screens at the same time)

Drill Spirits US has this box, too, for whatever that's worth.

I'm playing my DS way too much lately. I haven't gone a day without playing it since launch :(

Ya I went through a battery charge tonight after work on Castlevania:AoS, FF: Dawn of Souls, and a few stars of Mario. I loooove it.

The side view could be sprite based ala Paper Mario

That'll work. The battle for Luigi is the sort of perspective I'm thinking of. Hell it looked like it was straight out of Luigi's Mansion anyway.

Mario DS is like crack. I've gotten way further than I ever did in the original thanks to the incentive to unlock all the minigames.

I never knew the game was this good!

I haven't gotten further than one star - The slingshot minigame is all I play anymore.

you need to get going. There's some other good minigames. Currently hooked on the slot machine one.

The other great thing about the DS is I can sit it on my desk with headphones on and play stylus minigames and it looks like I'm working on something important :D

The trampoline mini-game is hella fun.

Who has the slot machine game? Luigi? I haven't got it yet, but if it's anything like the slot machine in the Casino Stage in Sonic 2, I'm gonna waste so much of my life.

I don't know the name of it, but the Yoshi one where you have to match up the faces Mario 3-style... yeah, I can't stop playing it. It's currently in my bag in sleep mode waiting for me to get off work.

I've fallen in love with my DS, an hour of play of Mario 64 and I was on Lik-sang ordering Feel The Magic and a carry pouch. <3

Well I just caved and ordered Wario Ware from Play Asia. I knew I couldn't last, don't really have the money but something will pop up.

Since I got the DS I haven't touched anything else, no Pro Ev 4, no MP Echoes and not even Mario Tennis. I'm utterly addicted to Mario 64 again, and the mini-games aren't helping.

How long did they say it would take til you got it??

Well they said it'll ship on Monday, so I'd assume the middle of the following week. Just hope it doesn't get caught up due to Christmas post.

Actually it just shipped. :D
With a bit of luck it'll arrive late next week, normal shipping. They usually take about 5 days to get here, Ireland, from Play Asia.

bah lik-sang is now saying that i won't get a ds until january, after saying it wud ship between dec1 and 10th. Unless I change to the japanese version which I don't want to do

bastards
