The "Official" Nintendo DS Launch Thread (NSF56k)

I just know that the controls, nor any console method really, competes with a mouse/keyboard.
and please tell me why that is. something you haven't done once so far. and you wonder why I call you biased.......

anyway, Urbz is at Best Buy for $30 and Spider-Man 2 is at Target for $28.88. For anyone who is interested in those and wants to avoid the $40 EA and Activision are trying to scam you on. The only game you can't pick up for $30 so far seems to be Madden 2005.

I have hopes for MPH. Right now it's nothing more than an amusing tech demo. 1f the advertisement for it that comes with MP2E lives up to its promise that it'll provide a solid and unique single player experience, I'll be thrilled..

That said, one thing that MPH did prove to me, is that non-PC FPS games can finally evolve to something beyond dual-analog, something that very closely approximates mouse/kb. It's downright amazing, actually. I, for one, can't WAIT until some decent FPS games come around ripping off what MPH accomplishes.

im just about to order one, but i need some more info, perhaps you guys can help.

warioware:twist is my favourite game at the moment and i would like to know if it would work with the DS, ie: cart placement, where do the gba carts fit into the DS?

also, is wario ware the launch title with the jap DS (japanese version is the only version to play for wario ware, to enhance the 'wft' factor)?
ie, does it come with the portable a-la hunters, or is it a separate buy?

edit: and its the charger for the DS, the same as for the GBA?

To answer your questions:

Battery:

If these images don't work, yes the battery is basically the same and GBA game goes in the bottom, DS game goes in the top.

Yes Wario Ware works with it.
It comes with a DEMO of Hunters.

Cart placement may be the same but the screen is at a differant plane than in the SP.

the top screen is at the same plane.. for the most part... though the screen plane on the SP is also different than the GBA.. they HAVE to account for that somehow..

and yes, the batteries and chargers are identical. so you european guys can just import one (american or janpanese) and use your SP chargers with it.

Just got home from Target. I love the way it feels. The stylus and buttons are too small, but that's not that big of a deal. Now to play some Metroid Prime: Hunters...

Yeah, local Target had only 8 folks (5 purchases) of the DS. Store had about 20-25 units on the shelves along with all the DS launch titles. But at least the new DS game cases are plastic instead of cardboard boxes (about the size of a CD jewel case). They also had a few cases (by ALS as usual), a DS game wallet for storing/transporting games and some cheap looking DS starter kit. I didn't expect to see any crowds at the local Target either.

I got two at Target today w/o any problems. :D
getting them when the stores open isn't going to be the problem.. it's going to be trying to pick them up this afternoon that is going to send many kids with their birthday money home.....

Got my DS! Pretty neat so far. Hunters is fun! Can't wait to try the multiplayer.

It'll be cool to be just walking to my next class across campus and having my DS wake up for some Pictochat when someone else is nearby!

Edit: Is there any way to get back to the "windows" part of DS without restarting? *Goes to read the manuel*

for all the people worried about ds sales

PistachioShell came out of the closet to say:
Okay, I just got home from working at a DS launch at the Redmond Gamecrazy, and we sold over a hundred of these little fuckers. I also took dozens of pictures, so I'll post em later.

I am way too tired to do it right now, but tomorrow I'll post a thread with them all on it. Question though, should it be here or in GBS? Too exhausted for common sense to kick in (14 hour shift...), so where should I put it?

From the SA games forum.

I stopped by the people playing Metroid on the way out and joined. System linked up right away and had no problems.
How does the joining work? Did your DS sense the other ones? Do the ones already playing have to approve for you to join?

Picked one up at Target this morning (2 hours after the store opened) along with SM64 and *gasp* Madden. Still charging the thing so no comments on how it is but...

The Target I went to had close to 30 systems and according to the clerk I was only the second person there this morning to buy one.

If it's any good my next purchase will probably be UrbanGT and TWoods.

Yay! heh

So far my only gripe with marioDS are the touchscreen controls. They should have made it so you don't drag the touch circle around. It should stay ancored where you first touched the screen. Other than that the dpad works great anyway. And metroid hunters controls awesome! =)

Oh, and I hate that I have to push a button to run.. especially when trying to move the camera and I slow to a walk. Not a huge deal, but run should have been default and walk the button.

That was pretty much what I was saying way back when I heard about the inital buttons :(

It works on emulators the opposite way and works great.

Just picked up 2 DS's and 2 copies of Mario 64. There was a sizeable line at EB and many were turned away because every system EB got in was a pre-order. Ages of the people lined up was 15-25, from who I saw. I had already pre-paid everything so it was a simple pick-up, declining the System Warranty and heading off to the food court, where I could already hear loud laughing and smack talk.

I sat at a vacant table and 'set up' the system, as I was doing so, an elderly man asked 'Is that a PDA?' I responded that it was the new Nintendo handheld, he looked surprised, and nudged his wife, asking if *he* Could get one, and he hadn't even seen it yet. I thought the system was very comfortable to hold, and wasn't as heavy as I thought it would be.

The wireless function works very well from what I saw, there were a few people in several Pictochat rooms and I could hear much smack being laid down with people playing Metroid.

System is charging atm, so I will wait till then to post full impressions, so far I'm very impressed, looking forward to playing Mario.

The DS did sense the others, and it made a sound.

As far as Metroid, one of the guys was the host and the rest of us were clients. He made the game and choose the options, and we had to join his game (it's an option in the menu). It was really simple.

around 20 people at Circuit City this morning, we sold them out in 10 minutes. Got my DS w/ Mario 64 DS. Fucking rocks! I actually think the touchscreen control is amazingly good!

Can you password them? Also can the host play too or just host? What if you sense several DSs? Do you get a list to choose from or how does it work? Tell me everything! :)

I got it.

Mario 64 DS's controls are ass, but I'm pleasently suprised with the added mini-games, those things alone make the game worth buying.

Metroid Hunters blows me away though, that game rocks.

It looked like a really quiet launch, no one else was buying it where I was. Although the sales people were just about to open a box and were excited.

I went to the Target near my house at 8 am for my anticipated DS purchase. No one else was waiting for the DS other than I (which I am thankful as they only had one system in stock :lol ) Now off to sleep again (thank god!)

I think it works similiar to how Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green allowed multiplay. One person sets up a game, and the others can ask to join. The game creator can then choose who he wants (by looking at their username) if there are some people around you don't wanna play with.

BTW, I wasn't really in Metroid Hunters before I got my DS. Now, this game is definately a must-buy!!

My EB had about 10 people waiting for it, and they were all pre-orders.

But when I went to Wal-Mart at around 11 today, there shelves were filled with DS. The clerk said they had only sold one.

I guess the Wal-Mart crowd would be waiting for black friday, anyway

Got my DS and Mario.. I love it. I think it's awesome and the quality of the screens blows GBA SP out of the water. Seriously, I think it's nearly worth it just for the GBA screen upgrade alone. GBA games look AWESOME on the backlit screen, it will be tough to go back to the SP after playing GBA games on DS. I played a little Super Mario 3 and I was in love immediately, it looks so good the DS.

Mario really is great too. The control issues have been blown out of proportion imo. I've gotten 4 stars so far, and I'm loving every minute of it, of course Mario 64 is still my favorite 3d platformer and having it on the go is incredible to me. Minigames are awesome so far and all seem to have a unique way of utilizing the touchscreen, can't wait to unlock more.

Metroid is even better than I thought it would be, touchscreen controls are awesome. Graphics are definitely better than screenshots would leave you to believe, the textures don't look nearly as bad as I thought they would. Also I'm not seeing any texture warping at all, in either game so far. Controlling Samus in morphball mode is awesome using the touchscreen as well.

One downside is that you can really tell there's a protective coating on the touchscreen, it actually muddies the visual clarity a bit, I guess there's some pretty good protection there cause it's really noticeable.

Anyway, the DS is awesome, I had my doubts..but now all I can do is laugh at all the haters, of which there seem to be a ton of here on the good ol' GAF.

I actually think Mario controls VERY well with the D-Pad. Very impressed, I can't wait to get my teeth into this, still waiting for it to fully charge before I start to 'play' -- I just wanted to see how well it controlled, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Played a bit of mario ds, really impressed so far, the screens really dont do this game any justice, the small screen and in motion, it really does look better than mario 64 even without texture filtering, heck, its a lot less blurry than mario64 and no noticable texture popup that i've seen that plagued psx and saturn games.

I got used to the standard controls, i tried the touch screen but it just felt weird, its uncontrollable with your bare thumb, the thumbstrap helps a lot for this but i still switched back to standard controls, i'll experiment with the touch screen controls later on.

Oh and that minigame where you have to guide the Marios to jump on the shyguys is fucking awesome, I can't wait to unlock more minigames.

Picked mine up this morning. Mario Looks a lot better then I thought it
would. So much so I think Its better then the 64. Plays great with the d-pad.
I can't play with the touch screen just feels to loose.

got both systems.. woman played the Urbz.. said it was very fun.

I played metroid prime and feel the magic.. feel the magic is extremely fun.. very zany..

thumb control in metroid still rocks.. pictochat is even pretty fun.. 10/10

So I just got back from Best Buy, and the guy behind me in line was also waiting to get his DS games (they had a special counter set up where you got the system and the games, then a rep walked you to the register with your items). He asked what games there were and the sales guy says (rummaging thru a box): 'Madden, Mario, Feel the Magic...' Guy behind me: 'Feel the Magic? Let's see that.' *takes box, glances at cover, pushes it back to sales guy* 'Oh, oh no. We don't need anything like that.'

:lol :lol :lol

Should I find that funny? Did he think it was...what?

I'm thinking the guy thought it was a Hentai game or something.

See, that's what I though, but is anyone that large of an idiot?

And they rummaged through a box? Jesus. Get organized, Best Buy.

Sounds like he was buying a DS for his kid or something.

Anyway, i tried Mario 64 out with the thumbstrap and it took some getting used to, but i liked it better than the digital pad.

Or he just hates quality or some shit. Quality-hating motherfuckers.

I'm eating some Krispy Kreme donuts right now to soak up my intense hangover, then it's off to EB.

I'm not sure if you can setup passwords. The game we played did not have a password. The host did play -- by "hosting" he just set up the play options and chose the map. I only played a couple of games and left, so I don't have much else to say about that. :)

As far as several DS's in range, I'm not sure about that. I think in Pictochat you can see everyone, but I didn't see an option in Metroid. When I went to "join" a game, it showed the host's name -- so maybe if several people are hosting, there will be a list. I'm not too sure though.

I forgot to say how impressed I am with the sound. It's one of the first things I noticed. The demo at Best Buy really doesn't do it justice.

Also, after getting some more time in with Mario 64, the mini-games rock. Almost makes the purchase worth it alone. Luigi's card games rock, and I'm glad it saves your progress/money you've earned. The sling-shot game also kicks some major butt. I can't wait to unlock some more! :D

I've been having a lot of fun too... I got Mario / Feel the Magic & the Metroid demo. Can't complain at all. The controls in Mario take about 30 seconds of adjustment and don't quite feel "right" yet, but I had no problems actually accomplishing tasks in the game, such as collecting the circle of coins in the first level, so I cant' really complain even on that issue.

Impressions are awesome. I'm happy that you fuckers are not only getting your DSes, but also enjoying it so much! This is what we're all about, isn't it? Some of the bitching that went on here in the past couple of weeks was unbelievable, so I'm happy that the 'honeymoon' han't been interrupted by any naysayers! Enjoy, cuz the stupidity is sure to return shortly!

That said, I need to get back to work studying for my midterm tomorrow. But tomorrow morning, first thing after getting to work, I'm gonna request a half hour break to run some errands and pick up my preorder of NDS and Mario. Hopefully they'll have some Feel the Magics in stock too, I regret not preordering that now.

I caved in too...and emailed Nintendo about getting a review system for the University newspaper. Yeah, I actually sent it. I believe my exact words were "I was wondering if there is a precedent for such a thing". I know there's no chance in hell of it happening. And yeah, I'm too cheap to actually purchase a DS.

Nice to see people are enjoying the system...I'd love to go down the road and pick one up tomorrow with SM64DS, but alas.

I just got back from getting my unit, and playing around with it a little. Seems like a super nice, durable little system. The games look really decent given the screen resolution (most of the "pixelization" I noticed was the screen resolution, not a lack of texture filtering)

GBA games looks really great on this thing. First game I pulled out was Circle of the Moon and I was like "Oh, so this is what this game is supposed to look like". Which is really nice, BTW.

Enjoying the unit quite a lot so far, only complaint being that I'm not "getting" the whole thumbstrap bit. Seems like the stylus or your thumb if necessary just works better.

When does Ridge Racer come out again?
