The Official SPIKE VIDEO GAME AWARDS 2005 Thread

It was a fun show to attend, for sure...that said, what the hell?!? They cut out my little political rant AND my shout out to my wife...the bastards!

:)

David

They shut our your political rant and a your shout out to your wife? I can understand the political rant, who cares! But the shout out to the wife is a little to far. I think it's a deep conspiracy to make people think gamers cannot get women. I'll alert Geraldo.

Thank god I am not the only one who finds the whole idea of this award show embarising, though I think a lot of that has to do with it being on a network that I have absolutaly no respect for. I only cought the first few minutes, but did anyone else find it funny how on the first award, that the only 1 of like 5 nomine's who was actualy there just so happend to also be the winner. :lol

Samual L Jackson is awsome, but it doesnt make this any less embarising.

Hey now, Spike gets props from me for getting UFC programming on free TV.

This thread disappoints. The entertainment that came from the thread about the first Spike VGAs was almost worth the existence of the abomination itself.

I dunno. If you guys really think this awards show contains any integrity then you need to look a little closer. More than any broadcast awards show this is a huge opportunity for ad space. Not just between segments, or when they preview an upcoming game, but for the actual nominees. I mean, PD0, King Kong and a host of other games weren't even released during the filming nor were a lot of them in final form. The ad revenue from EA, Activision and Ubi must have been tremendous. No amount of an EGM editor throwing in his 2 cents could've changed that. So take it as it is- a giant ad catering to the gamer stereotype we absolutely hate. In fact, the worst part of the show wasn't the fact that it was ad space for said game (in most case- but like Katamari and Lumi it does seem legit results rose to the surface) but the fact that the opening segment reinforced every 1984-2005 gamer stereotype there is- violence and tits. I don't think anything could've insulted me more. Or the fact that this show just represents what baby boombers view as a wasted form of entertainment. This show really does hurt the medium more than help it. Why not have a live orchestra ready to play passages from released games when the nominees are shown. And why not have more REAL developers present to accept awards? I'm sorry but Jack Black and Tony Hawk- no. I don't care. I want to hear from the real developers, even if it's one out of a team of a hundred.

Well seeing as you have been quoted like 6 times or so already, this isnt origonal, but I agree as well.

O.K. I just wanna say one thing:

MARIA MENOUNOS IS ONE HOT PIECE OF ASS!!!

I give it to Samuel Jackson for grabbing the balls to insult Arnold for five minutes for signing the VG bill.

That was great. :D

And WTF @ the Bloodrayne movie trailer. The movie looks lighter than the game itself. I mean, most of the scenes are in DAYLIGHT time! To make matters worse, is that the main character looks "pretty" and not "scary" like the main character of the game.

i always wondered why they chose the holidays for this show. wow.

I agree with your point, evilromero, but you've got to take some things into account:

NOBODY is going to sit through a segment with actual developers coming on stage to talk unless they're already video game people. You're not going to spread the gaming universe by doing that... you're just going to section it off from people who might be interested in shit. I mean, could you imagine how much it's suck to come to GAF to try and talk about video games, start to get your feet wet, and get torn to pieces because you didn't know who Hideo Kojima was? Well... that happens frequently :lol. But imagine GAF on TV, hahaha. It wouldn't exactly 'sell' the game industry, which is what the people putting this show on want, and personally it's what I want. More gamers = more money = more games, which, hopefully will yield more QUALITY games. I've read tons of stuff with developers talking about how the reason they can't go out and experiment everytime they get the idea to is because they don't have the money. Ubisoft would love to experiment but how can they experiment when they're so busy making the games people will buy en masse?

I mean, I agree with your point wholeheartedly. It's just last year watching Stan Lee give the Lifetime Achievement Award to Hideo Kojima, while the audience just stared apathetically and silently at the stage as he accepted it... it was just brutal. Maybe in 20 years we'll be at a spot where Ed Boon can be respected by a lot of people when he speaks in public, or Miyamoto can get comped a meal when he stays in the States. But I don't think the overall public (hence the TV networks) are there yet.

I would disagree with that Ed Boon comment. If the VGA awards took place during the rising popularity of Mortal Kombat, he'd be praised more than anything.

I mean, C'mon, its Mortal fucking Kombat!

I'm watching the After VGA party (its after VGA2005), and I just saw the trailers for both MGS4, and Gears of War. OMG! MGS4 is 60fps or above, with HD-looking graphics.

As for Gears of War *jaw drops* My god. is the game hot or what!?

And Prey. I've heard how anticipated the game is, after seeing the trailer, I want it now.

Point #1 - I don't believe any TV award show has a shred of integrity.

Point #2 - I think all the gaming stereotypes suck. Sorry, Japophile, anime watching, RPG playing cupcakes are no more respectable then teenaged, fake ass bad asses who consider True Crime New York to be a work of art.

Point #3 - I agree with the general point...this show does more harm for the industry repwise then good. But that could be said for 95% of the game-specific media coverage that it receives...almost every TV gaming I've ever seen panders to the lowest common denominator, or directs the show as if it's a spinoff from SNL.

Nothing said about his Pulp Fiction "speach" during the credits of the show? Jackson owns the world!

DCX

the only thing remotely decent about this show was the "after party" where they showed trailers for the upcoming games of next year. FF XII, MGS4 and GoW all looked so cool.

I only caught the tail-end of the show, so I can't comment on it but I'd say you people are being really unfair here. Most of the choices for award winners were far better than those provided by G4 or past years of the Spike TV Awards. Hell, they even had Kobayashi take the stage to accept the award for RE4 (Another good choice). Argue that I've set my standards too low by what's been offered in the past, but there's no denying that they've definitely improved, and I think we should give them credit for that.

As I said before, in my eyes it's no worse then the gaming media in general, so I'm really not complaining. I really don't give a fuck how the game industry is perceived or potrays itself anymore...as long as I get the games I want, it's all good to me. The show wouldn't have been any better if a host of RPG's or anime-inspired tripe swept up the awards like you see in half the best of year lists at various game sites, so whatever.

It could have been alot better if the people who were presenting the awards seemed like they had a shred of genuine respect for what goes into creating a great game, but they didn't. They were goig for this 'w000000h0000'/porno lighting/videogame awards are obviously a joke atmosphere. I bet the entire fucking room smelled like feet and fritos. As far as gangster wannabe versus skater kids versus emo kids versus japanophile versus Scarface, who gives a fuck.

I don't...but I've been on this board long enough to know that one type of gamer are seen as bitches, while another type of gamer are seen as real. So I say fuck 'em all, so as not to discriminate.

Exactly. I mean, they had Randy Couture presenting an award. You just know Randy doesn't know shit about videogames.
