Damn! That was the same kick that killed Crocop, and Randy just shrugged. PEACE.

That was more or less my thought when I saw it. He took that kick and a good one or two straight punches that he just shook right off. I'm not a dedicated UFC fan by any means, but I had to go downtown to a sports bar to catch this fight and I'm glad I did. Couture is just too great to watch.

The most amusing part to me was that I invited a friend to come join me to watch the match. For some ungodly reason, he brought his ex-girlfriend, a friend and his girlfriend, and one of her friends. For those of you who have never watched at least 3 rounds of UFC, including the title match with Randy's back covered in blood after shattering his opponent's face, with 3 girls who are, at best, accustomed to 11 guys tackling each other and lobbing a ball around...well, you should. One of the girls just had her head buried on her boyfriend's shoulder for most of the night since she couldn't really stand watching someone get punched.

I can't believe Couture. The man is just a freaking animal. The fact that he's better now then he was in his "prime" is just unbelievable.

Also MASSIVE :lol @ Huerta's backwards punching/elbows with the monitor. That was hilarious.

Never count out Captain America!!! Randy will hold that belt 'till hes 60.

wow.. i hope that extra choke was worth it for babalu..
apparently it cost him 25k from his purse.
Why Babalu... whY?
:\

I wonder if he'll even be back in the ufc...

Just got back from the bar a bit ago. This was a GREAT card, in that all of the main event fights had really good action. There was some really enjoyable groundwork last night.

Huerta/Crane - Huerta either needs new corner men, or needs to be slapped for not listening to them. He had several changes to take the fight back to the feet in the 1st and 2nd rounds and kept diving back into the action. He was doing some good damage, but taking a pretty unnecesary risk against a guy who had some pretty good bjj. I'd say he was letting his Ego get in the way.

Still, it showed he has some pretty damn good ground survival skills as well. The elbows while watching the monitor were hilarious. I think if Crane hadn't gassed he may have finished that armbar late in the 2nd(?). It looked like he had it to me. Pretty aggressive match, but gassing late in the 2nd from a 155er? geez

GSP/Kos - Least enjoyable match of the night. GSP is a beast, but Kos put up a pretty good fight I thought. Certainly better than I had envisioned him fairing from his back. He's clearly come quite a ways.

Cote/Kendall - Not a huge surprise. This was a tough pick, and I ended up taking Kendall because I thought his length would keep Cote at bay and he'd squeak out a decision. The hit looked a bit awkward.. it really didn't look like that heavy of a blow.

Pellegrino/Stevenson - This fight went roughly how most expected. A pretty good war between two fairly even guys.

Randy/Gabe - Randy just pinned him and punished him for most of the fight They looked pretty even in the standup before that. Too bad about the slam causing the nose break.

I haven't seen the prelim results, I'll watch them tommorrow but you can tell someone bleeds a lot. There was a big pool of blood on the canvas before the main event tonight, and it wasn't from the Lietes/Jensen match as we saw. Jensen looked solid in that, especially on his feet.

Unlucky for Gonzaga that the head clash fucked his nose and his chances up.

The incident reminded me of Nogueira vs Fedor II when they clashed heads accidentally, although that match went to a no contest.

the kick couture weathered was nowhere near the kick crocop recieved aka one of the worst looking ko's i've ever seen.

I agree.

Gonzaga caught an unsuspecting CC right on the temple w/ a lot more steam. The HK to Randy had less power and Randy anticipated it better by having his hands up and moving away from it just a bit as it hit him on the chin. Here's a gif:

Yeah but it looks like it impacted way before he could snap his leg.

RANDY!

I dont know how he does it.

He was outmatched outgunned, and yet he took Gonzaga down like a rag doll and punished him all match.

He is the greatest game planner in MMA honestly. He should be broken down, but his body is in near perfect sync. Even if Gonzaga couldnt breathe that well, even if he wasnt, his kicks wouldnt snap all match, and even if Gonzaga used his ground game Randy would have none of it.

The rest of the card, was great. Now the question is Which Emelinko brother is coming to the UFC?

I thought the UFC meant the prelims would be up for free. What a bunch of crap that you can pay 40 bucks and they still want to charge you to see the prelim bouts.

Anyone with any links to the prelim fights? :\

Actually looking at it again it looks like part of the kick was deflected by couture's shoulder.

Yup, he hits Randy in the armpit almost. Crocop takes it flush on the temple.

I still think Pellegrino got fucked. In the first two rounds Joe had nothing for him in the stand up and spent much more time on the bottom and took the more damaging blows in the process. Really the only thing Joe did in the first two rounds was get that suplex.

He won the first but not the second. I have no idea how you can see the second for Pellegrino.

And I dont know how you could have given it to Joe.

Well, my opinion is the same as the judges, commentators and most other people. It's you who are in the minority. Joe dictated the pace, had more takedowns and did more damage. That's why me and eveyone else gave the second to joe.

Didn't BJ Penn do a similar thing to Jens in their rematch w/o repercussion?

You don't snap your leg on round kicks if you want ANY power in them, sporsk. This isn't karate.

I see a snap in that kick he landed on Crocop! And what, Karate techniques are barred from MMA?

He's not "snapping" his leg in the kick on Crocop. I'm sorry Sporsk, but your previous comment was just silly.

The quality in the Gonzaga-Randy gif is crappy, but that looks like a full-power kick that landed almost flush to me.

Randy said himself it didn't land flush, wasn't hard, and he got a little lucky on that one.

And that's fair. Can't tell that from the grainy gif. I'm just saying it doesn't have to do with any lack of "snap".

ok i just got back from vegas, some quick/random impressions from the ppv

overall it was a great card, most of the fights were exciting and full of action

i think the worst fight of the night was huerta vs. crane, when is huerta going to face some good competition? ufc keeps lining up tomato cans for him to knock down, put him up against someone next time, crane was so 1 dimensional it was pretty funny watching him fight in rounds 2 and 3

i dont know if they televised the babalu fight, but it was an absolute bloodbath, and he did keep the choke on heath for a good 4-5 seconds after the tap, after the fight on the mic with Joe Rogan, Babalu said that heath got what he deserved for calling him a motherfucker, and basically put him in his place

if you think josh koschek got hit by the boo birds, you guys shouldve heard the boos for Kobe Bryant and Diego "dirty" Sanchez when they were put up on the big screens, it was pretty funny

there was a large canadian contingent in the crowd today, cote and gsp got huge pops from the crowd

Randy is fucking awesome, just another great performance, i thought he was going to win, but i didnt think he was going to dominate Gonzaga in that sort of fashion, very impressive victory for Randy

who does Randy face next? hopefully they sign Fedor, i would imagine the fight would be a total war

affliction tshirts are getting a little out of hand

on my flight back to O'Hare Patrick Cote was sitting right behind me, got to chat with him a bit about the fight and what not

The GAF MMA league is good fun, but it's going to be tough to catch bish and tinman.
Yeah, but we can compare per event stats under My Fight Camp. Proud to be top 3 in the picks again. :D dem is leading the wagering again but someone forgot to tell him not to bet against Randy as the underdog. ;)

In the main event, I found it odd that Gabe didn't want to fight on the ground. He would pop right back up after Randy took him down. Had to be their gameplan to get that big shot against Randy on the feet. Props to Gabe for going for the kill to the bitter end with that head kick and the following rush to the takedown. The one thing that really popped out to me this fight is how fast Randy is compared to other HW's cuz Gabe is pretty fast for his size. I would say that Randy and Fedor are the two fastest HW's. Fedor also uses his great well-rounded game to beat his opponents. He beat Nog with his standup, he beat Mirko on the ground and he beat great wrestlers with submissions. If Nog had better standup, he'd have a better chance beating Fedor. If Mirko had a better ground game, he too would have a better chance beating Fedor. I do believe that Randy has the submission defense to give him that chance at beating Fedor.

Yeah man Randy looked like a freakin LW moving around out there.

Just watched the other prelims.

Nice to see Mir finally get a win. And it was even better seeing his wife/gf go crazy with emotion after he won. Now he needs to step up his game and take on Brad "Motherfuckin" Imes! You know unless Fedor stop ducking Bad brad first.

The Guida/Aurelio match was disappointing. Guida foght a smart fight but did not look great doing it. Aurelio just didnt do much of anything. I cant help but think that is Marcus had tried to actually box with Clay he'd have beat him up pretty good. But instead he was content to throw nothing but just until it was too late.

Babalu looked freakin awesome. Too bad the dumb fucker had to go and pull that shit at the end and tarnish such a dominant victory. Oh and fuck Josh Barnett too. I hope a pony bites his weiner off.

Saw this last night and wow. Either i'm becoming more of a UFC fan and appreciating the skill or that was a plain out awesome card.
Randy continues to surprise. Fedor is not worthy.:D They should put him up against a nameless jobber first if he ever gets into the UFC. He might get embarrassed like cro cop and nog (should of lost).

Randy on how bad the kick was...

"Actually it was slapping...it didn't really land flush. I think if he would have hit me with his shin bone then I might have had a problem but he kinda slapped me with his foot and it really didn't hurt."

"There was one punch there I think that hit me pretty good, I saw some stars there for a second."

Great fights, but I think they need to retroactively rename the event:

UFC 74: LOOK AT HUERTA'S AND GSP'S BALLS!!!

Seriously, the women in our group were cracking up at every close-up. They proclaimed themselves new fans. :lol

Babalu did get out of control, but that fight should have been stopped waaay before Babalu pulled a Benoit on Heath...He his face was pounded like a bloody vag, wtf was Mazagatti thinking by not stopping it?

All in all, I think this may have been the best card all year, well besides Pride 33 of course.

What exactly is he doing than? Is his leg straight the whole time? Is he doing a hurricane kick??

The kick was more foot than shin, that's the difference.

Randy also got lucky because he moved his head right into that kick. I Remember someone bringing that up in the Sylvia fight about Randy being open to a headkick the way he slips punches.

Following yet another feather-in-his-cap performance Saturday at UFC 74 in Las Vegas, real life superhero Randy Couture (16-8), was informed Sunday by doctors that he’d broken his arm during his third round TKO stoppage of Gabriel Gonzaga (8-2).

Couture, 44, sustained the injury Saturday blocking a Gonzaga right high kick with his left forearm, cleanly separating the ulna bone with a “nightstick fracture,” a break common in law enforcement circles. The injury placed the UFC heavyweight champion’s arm in a splint for six weeks. The appendage will not need a cast.

Does that mean right leg = hospital? Left leg = cemetary? I knew Randy blocked that kick with his arm.

Holy shit, Napao can throw a kick. It happened so fast, I thought it caught him right on the side of his cheek. Good thing Randy did manage to block it, and finishing the fight with a broken freaking arm makes his win even more incredible.

This wasn't the same kick that we were talking about earlier, i'm pretty sure GG threw another head kick earlier in that round that randy blocked with his arm. That's the one that broke it.

Gonzaga continuing for so long with a broken nose was incredible but for Couture to continue with a broken arm as well is just amazing. I have always respected Couture a lot but Gonzaga really impressed me in that fight. I always thought he was decent but he only really seemed to be hyped up once he was given a title shot (as if the UFC was trying to legitimise him as a title contender). But he proved beyond any doubt that he deserved a title shot and, IMO, fully deserves a rematch after a few more fights

I thought UFC 74 was great btw. Lots of good matches, an excellent lineup, and some excellent action
