The Order 1886 Gameplay Footage

Visually it looks gorgeous. The gameplay looks like your typical TPS (with modified QTE's thrown in)... this definitely could be a good game. I hope there is more to the gameplay (I would be surprised if there isn't)

I think the game looks fantastic so far. I know everyone is tired of hearing the word 'cinematic' being thrown around by devs of late (implying shallow gameplay in favor of juicy visuals) but honestly, there are more than enough games out there that if one wants to the choice to play a linear, action game that mimics the evocative, visual roller-coaster feel of a summer blockbuster, you can be satisfied as well. From the previews, I think the Order 1886 nails it. I like the letterbox and the shaky-cam, and they've done a wonderful job of incorporating that Victorian-era, Jack the Ripper lighting to mask the sometimes, immersion-breaking graphical nuances that video games inherently have.

I hope the framerate improves though.

I'm a big MGS nut so for me these news are very exciting.
The Order: 1886 takes strides to bridge gameplay with cinematics in new and interesting ways, but the foundation reminds me of Uncharted. For starters, much of combat is carried out via third-person gunplay where taking cover is an essential element. The Order even takes cues from The Last of Us, with Galahad and co. faced forward in a realistic fashion when crouched behind a wall or object. But there's also a great deal of traversal; in this demo, Galahad and Lafayette climbed over and under obstacles and leaped between buildings in somewhat scripted fashion. Meanwhile, quiet moments of exploration and conversation offer constant storytelling, Naughty Dog-style. In fact, it's fair to say that, in this particular demo, infrequent combat moments punctuated an otherwise contemplative atmosphere, not the other way around.

That's not the B-Roll.
Oh my mistake than.

It's PS4's visual showcase like Ryse was X1's visual showcase. I'm sure both games will wind up being pretty shallow in the end (we already know for certain Ryse was--didn't stop a bunch of people from enjoying it, however). But in terms of graphics and production values, it whets the players' appetites for what is possible on the new generation of consoles.

You obviously haven't played a single game made by either Crytek or Ready at Dawn, judging from your comment. Crytek hasn't made a fun game in forever and Ready at Dawn has made several awesome games, albeit on the Psp.

Yea it looks like it still has a long way to go.
I hope.

So you think the visuals are unimpressive?

Visually it looks gorgeous. The gameplay looks like your typical TPS (with modified QTE's thrown in)... this definitely could be a good game. I hope there is more to the gameplay (I would be surprised if there isn't)

Please realize that you've seen 10-20 SECONDS of gameplay, and you're already making judgements on what the overall gameplay style is, and assumptions about whether there's more to it than what you saw during those 10-20 seconds.

Then why are you doing in this thread then, just to shit on it?

Expressing his opinion regarding the gameplay showed in the video, which is perfectly acceptable. This isn't the "Order 1886 Thread of Only Good Impressions" and frankly, I'm a little tired of seeing whinging from folks about the amount of "vitriol" when that vitriol is really just people saying they don't think the gameplay looks very interesting.

That's not vitriol, that's an opinion. You're welcome to disagree with it in a civil manner, but you're not welcome to tell folks their opinions are unwanted.

I think this look great. I think the hate QTEs is a little too much. QTEs can be fine as long as they are limited and are put to good use. Everything else looks great. I think people are disappointing that this is a TPS from reading some of these comments. And that this being like Gears is a bad thing.

Low frame rate?

Go back and look at the gameplay parts of the footage. It looks like sub 20 fps to me, maybe low 20's. But it's definitely not close to a solid 30 fps in those parts of the footage. I'm sure that is just due to the game not being optimized yet however.

I don't know how to feel about this one. The game looks beautiful and extremely promising but I found the reveal kind of underwhelming...Not saying that it needed to be more bombastic or anything, just that I'd rather seen gameplay take place at an open environment instead of a narrow corridor.

I don't get why there is so much hate for this game, but to each his own I guess. I think this looks amazing. I wish they had shown more, like some half breeds and I'm curious to see how the physics ties into the gameplay. Being a fan of God Of War, Heavy Rain, Parapa the Rapper ect, I really dont mind QTE's. I also loved Gears, Uncharted, Binary Domain ect, I dont mind it being a cover based shooter. The setting looks great and the lore sounds interesting. I'm curious what types of things people who are tired of the same ol cover based shooter should do to be considered praise worthy for pushing the envelope in terms of gameplay for this gen?

It has about as good a chance of being average as it has of being great right now. In other words, we still haven't seen enough. We haven't seen enough to say the game will be bad or average, and we haven't seen enough to feel certain it's going to be amazing. There's just far too little info at the moment. But I see some potential there for a really good game, and I think I have an idea of what they're going for, but, as always, it's all in how it comes together in the end product. I think they're aiming to do what Uncharted 2 did with all its cool, scripted moments, that made the world feel like it was a lot more alive, but also created so many "wow" moments during real gameplay. They aim to do a combination of that while showing off the other abilities of the characters through QTE. I also wouldn't be surprised if there's more than meets the eye to the QTE, like some type of modifier depending on whether you're facing a half breed or something of that nature. Just a guess, but I have a feeling.

It looks amazing, obviously, but I'm a bit disappointed that it looks to be a fairly standard cinematic TPS game.

I feel like the setting for this game deserves much more than that. I really hope there's much more to it than a shooting gallery and slow-walks down linear paths to gawk at the scenery.

Based on how little they've shown and how few gameplay details they've revealed, I say it's highly unlikely this is coming out this year.

Is it only me that thinks the visuals are terribad?

Doll looking hair
Plastic cloth
Bad lighting

I hope it will be improved a lot in the final version.

Between this, the dude trolling @yosp, and a few others... it has been a pretty embarrassing day for a few of the vocal minority on gaf.

The game looks absolutely beautiful. I look forward to the next info dump.

I don't know if it is just the fog causing it but at times the models look really washed out.

Edit: Here is a screenshot of what I mean.

OrEBJid.png

It looks like proper lighting of a cloudy day with the filters and post-processing they're going for.

Jesus RAD is being so coy. Where's the destruction? Where's the other types of gameplay? I get that they are trying to not reveal a lot, but the only over-the-shoulder action you reveal is 5 seconds of hiding behind cover in an alley, people will have plenty to complain about. The only way to silence detractors is show what's different about the game besides the visuals (which are amazeballs btw).

I was expecting to mainline some heroin today, and RAD offered me a puff of skank weed. Cmon....

Next Gen Chest High Walls(TM)!

Honestly, I think this kinda looks like Gears with a different skin on it. I so hope I'm wrong, since it does look beautiful.

Absolutely not sure about this game at all, weird.

Well, if this is all of content we're going to see of the game right now, I guess I'll comment (we can only comment on what we are given).

The "video" part looks pretty damn good. Nice cloth physics on the uniform and the characters look as if they have a good weight to them. The environment that we see is pretty bland though. There's never anything exciting about an alleyway. The transitions from "cutscene" to "gameplay" are smooth, but I hope they don't happen so often that it just completely rips you out of the game.

The "game" portion looks pretty lame. The gun had to "oomph" to it, the sounds were pretty muted, and there was nothing to really grab you. The melee QTE is...well, that depends on your affinity to QTE. However, again, it pulled you out of the gameplay completely so it can "look" good. I'm not really a fan. We didn't get to see much, but what we did see, I wasn't impressed.

On the subject of QTEs... I don't mind them, but I am curious as to why they are even needed anymore in the Next Generation of gaming. Shouldn't we be past this? Shouldn't the power of these consoles allow developers to really be able to let us control these actions in a much better way to keep us "in the game"? I'm not pinning blame here on The Order or RaD, but in general. This seems like a gameplay trope that needed to either go away, or saved for only the most bombastic, crazy moments in the game (This is why QTEs fit Asura's Wrath so well. Everything was fucking crazy). Using QTE for simple melee is pretty blah. =/

Overall, the video part is pretty damn nice but the game part looks rather dull. So, as a "video game" it looks okay so far. It continues to look like a good weekend rental.

I hope more stuff is shown though. Probably E3 or whatever though.

He meant gameplay reveal.
While I agree I don't think this was the developers choice here. This game was teased as e3 last year and now 9 or so months later we still have seen nothing from this game. People were talking about this game being delayed and voicing their concerns. I think this was an attempt on Sony's part to try and ease some of those concerns. I think if it was up to the developer no footage would have been shown until E3 this year. But this is Sonys big fall/winter title and they wanted something to show. I don't know this for sure obviously, I just can't imagine a developer would really want to show off a game that is still so far from completion.

Looks like a crap 3rd person shooter with a ton of quick time events.

If the game is better than that they aren't showing there best foot off.

That lighting is wonderful, and the textures look great. BUT QTEs!!!! WHY!! I can see they are trying something a little different, but I hate QTEs. Outside of that, anything new on the PS4 is welcome, and new IPs are even better.

While I feel impressed so far I agree they havn't shown enough yet. Pretty much we just know the graphics will be good. I hope they slowly release a flow of new footage leading up to E3 and dont just leave us with what was released today.

Please, PLEASE show me the ton of quick time events, and PLEASE tell me how the 3rd person shooting aspect of it is crappy.

The Order clothes\ cloth is what impress me the most .
You don't see many games with any thing like that since everyone stuck wearing clothes that don't move no matter what they do .
The lighting is also very good for the look they going for .
