Combat can be so excellent in this game.

Haha, standing in the clear open, firing at poor AI, while your wingman doesn't do jack... what combat strategy is this?

Best 3.25 I ever spent. Too many cutscenes but I very much liked the gunplay. If ROD take tha valid criticisms to heart , the sequel will be day 1 for me. More worldbuilding and less walking and talking please . What is this the West Wing? I do like the game though.

I played through this today and I actually really enjoyed it. I can understand where it wouldn't resonate with everyone, but the amount of hate the game is getting is really baffling to me. I sincerely hope they get a shot at a sequel.

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
I just finished it too and I strongly disagree with this. Maybe you just haven't seen enough bad movies. I thought this story was head and shoulders above most genre Hollywood fare, reminded me a lot of some of Kim Newman's books. It left a lot unsaid which a lot of game stories seem afraid to do. So most of the cut scene story elements were slow and subdued rather than action packed. All the action was left for the game play, something I liked a lot. Too many games use cut scenes to show the exciting explosive moments rather than letting you participate in them. Which is amusing considering a lot of the criticisms levelled at this game.
I want you to watch that readletter review, specifically where they just describe the plot, and then tryto tell me that it's head and shoulders above hollywood films. God knows it wants to be, but it most certainly isn't, it doesn't leave a lot unsaid because of the nuance of writing and leaving things for interpretation. It does so because the writers weren't very good at their job. And it does it all with the most straight faced use of cliches i've seen in a game recently, seriously, absolutely no attempt whatsoever to subvert them. I'd actually say that it's David Cage bad, except with the hilariously bad acting.

When you say "hilariously bad acting" do you mean from David Cage's games or The Order? Because The Order has generally great acting and pretty good dialogue, even if the plot doesn't compliment them as well.

Finally played through a friend's copy, the game is undeniably beautiful, but everything else was so disappointing.

I wouldn't have minded the rather bog-standard 3rd person action if the story held up, but it just, didn't. The characters felt like something out of a cheap Syfy special, which could actually have been pretty great if the game didn't take itself so seriously. While watching the cutscenes I felt that embarrassed-by-proxy feeling you get watching Michael Scott in The Office.

This really feels like a launch title that shipped a year and a half late. The upside is that graphically, this shows what is possible. I'm excited for the engine to get used in a game worthy of it.

Cage's games. With the only exception being Ellen and Dafoe in Beyond Two Souls

Yeah, haven't played Beyong though. I'm hoping there's a PS4 remaster.
Ohhhhhhh yea I would never recommend anyone have to sit through that plot. It's another one of those things that shows just how far behind film gaming is in terms of storytelling despite our best efforts to be movie like.

I really enjoyed it. Wouldn't give it a 9 or anything but I'd be shocked if someone gave this game anything lower than say a 6...

That said, I know a few people complain about the encounters with non-humans. But how exactly are people hoping to tackle that? In other games, a newer enemy just becomes bullet sponge which get's boring... and if it's a question of bullet sponge or something different like the way Order handled it, I'll take Order...

Well... just finished it.

What a mess this game is. There was no coming back after the end of Act 1. From that point forward the game took a nosedive from which it never recovered.
They split up the team, putting a stop to their reasonably enjoyable interaction. The action became more front and center, which would be fine if it was fun. Then there's that awful stealth section and finally the story...

For all the talk from the devs about making a cinematic game you'd think they would have ended up with a strong story. Instead, we get a twist that was obvious from the very second a character is introduced (
Lucan's character design giving you the immediate impression that he's an antagonist... not to mention his dialogue
). We also get the infamous "We're not so different... you and I" line TWICE from TWO DIFFERENT CHARACTERS. The story is tired trope after tired trope and this was the the breaking point for me.

Finished the game on hard. Not sure how long but I guess it took me around 10 hrs. Since I'm a sucker for good graphics and presentation I'd give this a solid 8. Without that I'd say it's a 7. The gunplay was great and the encounters were better than I thought they would be going in, and had a good dose of hectic dynamic action that reminded me of the battles in Uncharted. I loved doing the brutally animated CQC takedowns and tried to do them as much as I could while staying alive. There simply needed to be more fights, with more interesting level layouts. As for the QTE and stealth sections I didn't mind them at all. Story wise, it was B tier stuff. Passable, but who cares, the graphics are the star of the show.

Comparatively, I think if you liked U3 this game should rank somewhere close to that. I'd give it a higher score though because of the insane visuals and details.

I enjoyed the game quite a bit. I liked the story and the guns where unique and fun to use when you got hold of them. I loved how brutal it was at times. Gallahad is a stone cold bad ass. Gameplay was way too hand holdy though. But the story didn't disrespect the player by pointing everything out.

It's cool that people don't like the game. But people seem to come off incredibly pretentious with their reasoning. That review posted came off that way. Maybe that was intentional.

This game is gotten a really bad wrap. I know a lot of people genuinely played it and disliked it and I can see why some wouldn't enjoy it. However it is obvious that some never gave it a chance and have gone out of their way to trash it at every turn. Reguriating the same problems that the game has and searching for new ones.

Anyway hope this gets a sequal. The potential for the next game is pretty high.

finally played it last week...

story wise i stopped caring halfway through but gameplay was solid some shit really annoyed me but nothing bad enough to stop me from finishing it.

the graphics didn't really do anything for me believe it or not but i did appreciate their attention to detail.

kinda glad i rented it instead of buying it hopefully they learn and do an uncharted 2 for the sequel..

Unfortunately, everything they say about the game's story is true. The story and the way they tell it just doesn't work.
I think they should have Made Galahad and Igraine have an active, perhaps secret relationship and start the entire game with a scene where they do nothing except talking and stuff. Then, at least we would have some sort of motive behind Galax ad's acts. (like he wants to protect Igraine)

Wow. Such a mixed experience with this game. Incredible heights, and really low lows. The storytelling, acting, and scripting were generally stellar. There are so many touches that add a ton to the experience. The environments... characters... voice acting... all stellar.

There are elements of this game that are so fundamentally flawed though. It's the little things that really bother me. Things like:

1. Galahad can't take cover or engage in melee combat while holding a lantern.
2. When Galahad is shot and is forced to drink and recover, he will stand up completely, even when he was shot while behind cover. This naturally results in him getting massacred.
3. Stealth sequences are abysmal and full of wonky design. In the HORRIBLE sequence in the courtyard Galahad can't perform a take down until the character arbitrarily decides to take out his knife. There isn't a button for this, he does this when he feels he is close enough, and takes his time with it. Also, he can't jump over the little hedges in this sequence, making him frustratingly easy to catch. This whole sequence feels like it may have been added at the last minute to pad length or diversify gameplay. The low point of the game for me.
4. Lycan encounters are incredibly repetitious and poorly designed. They run at you exactly the same way every time. Incredibly tedious. Again these sequences feel artificially lengthened to extend running time.
5. There are points where the game becomes a sloggy and repetitious shooting gallery, at least on hard difficulty (which I played). Moving from cover to cover and mixing things up often results in you being unavoidably destroyed. There are three or four key sequences where this is obnoxiously true, and that represent a frustrating and seemingly random difficulty spike over the rest of the game. This difficulty doesn't ramp up throughout the game though, instead there are a few cruelly punishing moments strewn about the game's running time at random, though most of the game is a breeze even on hard.

And yet, despite a ton of problematic game design choices, I was riveted by the game in all the moments that I wasn't incredibly frustrated with it. I absolutely love this universe, and was really involved with the game's characters and lore.

I don't know if there has ever been a video game universe that I so badly wanted to interact with in ways other than shooting up, and yet was unable to do so.

I don't agree with the most negative reviews though, I want to see more of this universe. I think Ready at Dawn accomplished some truly incredible things with this game, but were choked by their own ambitions in some very key areas. A sequel to this game could represent the kind of sea-change improvement in quality that we saw with the jump from Assassin's Creed 1 to 2, or Uncharted 1 to 2 (though I think Order:1886 has bigger problems than either of those games).

I believe this franchise could have a bright future if properly handled.

I'm at Chapter VI now I think? is that halfway through?

Should have started with Hard right away. earned a few trophies now but I didn't want to look at the trophy list so as to not spoil myself.

I can see why people may dislike the game but it is definitely pretty and I guess all the walking and talking was to allow gamers some time to appreciate it (but not sure if that worked in their favor, give us photo mode instead :p)

it reminds me alot of UC1 a rough game with alot of potential. definitely hoping for a sequel

Please don't kill the series @yosp

I have to vent- The game has issues and is most profound hen I reached the level following the armory. Everything thing that's wrong with the game come together to create this unique sense of frustration. Been stuck on that level for over 40 min before calling in quit for the day.

Haha, I do want to play the game, but mostly because I enjoy the variety of gameplay designs and I get enjoyment from Cage's games.

It's one of those things that seems inevitable, at the same time also feeling like something that would have happened already.

Exactly. I can't say for sure.

Pretty much this for me. I kept thinking as I was playing that it felt very much like UCI - rough and maybe a tad unrefined/basic in some areas, but still a very fun game and a solid framework to build on. A sequel could really be amazing.

So I completed it and ended up like the plot. But one thing I don't understand is
how are vampires and werewolves the same thing? The UIC was sending vampires to America. Lucan and co are lycans. Are they in cahoots?

Yup, Lakshmi pointed it out (during the vampire reveal), that the vampires and lycans were working together. Not sure about the extent of the partnership, but yeah, they're basically in cahoots.

That's really underselling ND don't you think? UC1 may be rough but it is a solid and compactable shooter at the least. The pacing was consistent, it had other tense moments but most of the game revolves around you participating be it exploring or combat. If that was an example of "rough" it is no surprise why UC2 achieved that many rave reviews simply because it actually had solid ground for the game to be based upon.

Nothing of TO:1886 I've seen could be in the same ballpark as UC1 The gunplay and visuals are the only aspects I've seen that yields positivity; everything else needs to go back to the drawing board.

Wah? The complaints about the Lycan fights were that they were simple, boring, repetitive and underwhelming. The whole game is sold on the idea of "The Order, defenders of the realm from supernatural forces". It'd be in RADs best interest to make the fights with Lycans interesting maybe? Or the main focus of the game over shooting generic rebels / bad dudes? That'd be a good idea instead of just rolling over and saying "oh well at least they're not bullet sponges, good job RAD!"

I'm really glad they highlighted Tesla poor use throughout the game in the PR Review. Like the first time you meet him the great invention he has to give you is....a scope for a rifle? Yay, thanks Tesla you fucking genius!

Just finished it, and liked alot. Enjoyed it almost as much as tlou. Love me some cinematic games.

Encounters with the beasts were Just enough for me. Wouldn't want more. This game gets too much hate IMO.

Just beat it. It's definitely longer than five hours, and not nearly as many cutscenes as I expected there to be. The graphics/art direction are very good, but way overhyped. I did appreciate the steady framerate and lack of bugs. The lycan combat was terrible, and the human enemy encounters were solid, but uninspired. It was a shame you barely got to use the two most interesting weapons in the game. The music and sound design was great for an orchestrated sountrack, which I usually dislike. I definitely enjoyed the characters, the story, and the atmosphere though. I think a lot of critics were too harsh on the game, but overall it's metascore isn't that far off what it should be. Hopefully we'll get a much improved sequel in a few years.

The acting pretty much ruined Heavy Rain. That and the ass ignorant story.

It is pretty funny that blacksight is just another QTE, basically. You trigger it and flick the stick from target to target. Compare that gif to any of the Vanquish ones where you are boost sliding and manually triggering the slo mo and manually aiming. That is good combat.

Beat the game Saturday. The gameplay was shallow, QTEs can DIAF, the pacing was poor, the story was all over the place but, by the end of it I found myself enamoured with the world that was being built. Interesting technology, political structure, time period and occult mysticism. I'd like to see more of the world and where RAD was going with the story but with more coherent and polished game mechanics.

I quite enjoyed the world of The Order. The story was also pretty decent although I hate that

it ended on a sequel hook? And that bastard Hastings didn't get killed

The reception this game has gotten is so strange. The hate is unfounded. I can understand it getting some stick for the cinematic approach up to a point, but the hate has reached crazy levels. Check out this comment from the "Previously Recorded" Review thread for The Order.
Man, by the end of that video I felt as angry as they did. What a piece of shit this game sounds like.

That person will never play this game, and if they do it will be with so much bias theres no way they'll enjoy it. Its crazy man, i enjoyed the shit out of this game. I dont think i've seen such a believable acted out story in a game ever, im still trying to get over how they created such a thick, potent atmosphere. The ark gun, termite gun and the shotty are some of the most fun weapons to shoot in a video game.. Its really worth experiencing imo.. idk, people get brainwashed and influenced so easily its unfortunate.

I know you're joking/venting, but the criticisms haven't been against an approach to game design or any particular gameplay mechanic: it's been that the game's execution on a whole range of those things is flawed.

i.e., it handles its cinematics poorly for a game, it uses QTEs poorly, etc.

I feel the same way, The Order just was not a good cinematic game. Someone not liking the game doesn't mean they hate cinematic gaming. Heck I went to play Last of Us right after I finished The Order to wash that taste away. Anyone thinking the only problem with the Order is that some hate it cause it's cinematic is ridiculous. The game has tons of legit issues in both story and gameplay, and I just did not enjoy most of what I experienced while playing the game, that doesn't mean I hate it cause "it's cinematic". The gameplay never evolves from the very first time you shoot a gun, there is no actual enemy variety, the monsters that were mainly marketed for the game probably shouldn't have even been in the game, etc. Heck I think the short length probably made the game better, I wouldn't have wanted to keep going with gameplay that never changes. It's about more than this game just being "Cinematic" or it's length, this game has some issues. People are free to enjoy it, but constantly dismissing anyone who doesn't think this game is golden is dumb. Hell I enjoy Knack, but I don't get all up in arms anytime someone criticizes it or try to make the game something that it isn't. Knack has legit issues too, doesn't mean I couldn't enjoy much of the time I spent with the game.

Just borrowed this game from my brother and I played it all the way through in one night. Oh, but a glorious night it was! I feel like the length of Gray's story was just right. In fact, if I was going to add to the run length of the game, I wouldn't have made his story longer. I would've just had more of the Knights' stories unlock as you complete the game. Seeing the same incidents from Izzy's perspective would be interesting, for example or the Marquis' perspective on the event would be interesting too. Seeing the whole period of time from Lakshmi's perspective would be SUPER cool too, a rebel campaign if you will.

Co-op would be great for a game like this too. Here's hoping that RAD get the chance to put out a sequel.

I do like the idea of a first playthrough not necessarily making sense, story wise, but it would then unlock modified playthroughs that have the same events through other character's points of view. It wouldn't need new environments or encounter design either. It seems like an interesting way to parse out the content that's already been made, plus some new story elements.

I love cinematic games, thought The Order was shit.

Chest high wall fake movies is one of my favorite genres. They tend to have some form of spectacle to go along with good pacing. Perhaps some nicely scripted moments to go along with some good encounter design. The Order has absolutely none of this.

The encounters suck. The AI sucks. The supernatural elements are implemented laughably, if at all. Player agency is at nearly zero for a majority of the game. The collectibles are horrible. It is brain dead easy, even on hard. It is super short and that is with unskippable cutscenes, extended periods of slow walking and making you stare at every item you pick up. The Order had an entire generation worth of good to great chest high wall fake movies to draw from and they still managed to make the lamest, tamest and most boring one of them all. What a wasted opportunity.

Even with all that, it's still above probably 90% of genre fare, which is what he specified. I also feel like most of genre movies released in the past 10 years or so have been absolutely insufferable, maligned with flaws far worse than anything I've seen from Order. Yes, the Order story crumbles under closer inspection, but experiencing it casually, it kept me entertained throughout, was never insultingly bad, and there was a nice tone and pace to everything. The only thing that jumped at me as potentially groan inducing is that it used "We're not so different, you and I" phrase - twice. Which is once more than what was in everyone's favorite Uncharted 2.

We all have games that we know aren't "good" that we still enjoy, but telling other people "no, it's totally fine if you ignore its problems" doesn't really have a place in a conversation about specifics. The game's narrative has issues, even before considering that it doesn't tell a satisfying story. Full stop. Deflecting that by making a broad criticism of basically all movies is getting even further from talking about the actual game. Pretending that nine-tenths of all similar games have the same/worse issues is just plain wrong, at least without any specifics to that effect.

Apart from the insta-deaths from QTE's and stealth near end game. the games execution is good, even great imo. You can find a whole range of "flaws" in any game. People were expecting this to be flawless or something?. Im not saying i want every game to take this approach, but there should be a place for it, and i hope theres a part 2 because the story was awesome and i want more.
