The Player 1 Podcast Topic

The whole drive club thing flew over my head so this cast was the first I heard of it. It seems to me that a line was crossed from journalism into speculation and it is unfortunate that it back fired but to say the story should not have been written is wrong. Too often the press cozeys up to developers and acts like their friend. That a story isn't justified because someone might get upset. The hypocrisy on GAF itself is a problem. Consensus does snowball I think online.

The south park discussion struck a chord with me too. Not a massive fan of the show but I can't play it in long bursts. I have had fun but its not quite as grand as I expected. Perhaps a victim of it's delays.

I'm the one who asked about backlogs, and I was not thinking of the backlog of shame, just that I currently have a bunch of games I want to play in my current backlog, and don't know when I can get to them.

It was more of a question of why gamers in general allow such a thing to exist since most of the games in my backlog would still exist somewhere until I was actually reading to play them.

Where do you go? I carry this shit with me every day and I'm lucky if I even get one.

There's a Streetpass group that meets every couple of Saturdays at Scotia Square. There's about 20 people there to tag (with about 25 3DSs) and you can usually double up at the McDonalds they just added.

Most of the games in my backlog that I haven't played yet were bought close to their minimum price. If I have the opportunity to get a game I want to play eventually for a handful of dollars from a Steam sale then I might as well buy it immediately. It's nice having a selection of games in your library to choose from. When I buy a game at full price I usually start playing it at once.

Have nothing of real value to add here but want to say I met Greg at GDC this year, super cool, and that this is the only gaming podcast that I know will make me laugh hard during my commute at least once a week + everyone is authentically themselves. Keep it up dudes!

Did he have eyebrows? He could have been an impostor.

Current camera technology doesn't have enough Ds to capture the fine hairs above my eyes.

Stewy got dem fine hairs. Gurls be all holla holla can I stroke them for a dolla? But Stewy's got integrity so he doesn't participate in such lewd activities.

Some gamers buy more games than they play. Some people buy more books that they can read. Others buy more DVD/Blu-rays than they can watch. There are those that buy more bottles of alcohol that they an drink. If there is a pursuit, there are probably those that purchase more than they are currently able to consume. Backlogs can exist in all interests that people have; it's just gamers that choose to give it that name and talk about it in such as way.

(Or maybe not. Perhaps there are book groups that talk about their backlogs and the associated shame with having not yet read 50 Shades of Grey. Or a wine club that gasp when someone mentions they haven't got around to drinking their 2013 Vintage Chateau de la Grange Pinot. Or the ruckus that erupts when one member of the movie club admits to still having the Blu-Ray of White Chicks still in the shrinkwrap.)

But many enthusiasts always invest more money than they should, always hoping to experience far more of their interest than they can (especially when they go on sale). Really, the only shame associated with backlogs should really be the money that's been invested in media that could have been spent elsewhere.

Looking at the games that I currently have unplayed, I don't feel any regret about their unplayed status, just remorse of how much money they represent that could have been better spend on other things (like my mortgage).

Soon it's going to be weekend again :-) CJ has to be super exited to talk about the Mario Kart 8 trailer. I really wish all Wii U games had looked like that since day 1 and maybe there could have been a few more... It's a shame really but at least the few Nintendo fans are getting a real treat this May.

The Wii U already has some amazing looking games, but either way I don't think it's the graphics that will make anyone play MK8.

Half the time my wife is sitting there talking to me. That's why I don't normally hook up a mic. I'll try to do it more often, though.

Interesting discussion about Pete Dodd. Mike said a lot of things that weren't necessarily PC but probably needed to be said. Kudos to you guys for being completely honest about it.

Mik is practically married to Pete Dodd so anything he says should be taken with a bag of salt. Pete Dodd is a horrible person and he makes things up just to be Internet famous. If I ever see Pete Dodd I'm calling the police. In fact I'm making the call right now just to tell them they should also keep an eye out for Mik.

On a more serious note Pete Dodd's IndieGogo has just officially passed the 50% mark. It's moving along painfully slow, though I guess it's expected. Personally I hope he gets his site up and running but I sincerely don't have much faith that it's going to survive the test of time once up.

I'm not sure they did but I don't want mik to yell at me too so I'll leave it at that.

Do you guys think that current mp games with their xp and grinds are inevitably skewing mp games to younger audiences who have the time to invest? Should we go back to games like counter strike that whenever you chose to play, your skill is all that dictated what you got out of the game?

Yes, but then again they really have to appeal to that audience because old married dudes with jobs weren't even the target market for CounterStrike back when that first came out. IMO they're just making the games deeper for the audience that has the most time to play them - through grind, xp, leveling up, etc.

Also it's worth noting that all these unlockables and such don't replace skill but rather augment it. A poor player with everything unlocked in Titanfall or CoD is going to have his ass handed to him by a skilled player even if he just started playing.

From behalf of myself and most of the sane population I would like to express our thanks to Mike Philips for calling out CJ's Nintendo bs. I love CJ and respect him a ton but he's just dug his head so deep underground it's dumb.

And that's coming from someone who is seriously thinking of bying a Wii U (for the 2nd time since I sold the launch unit two weeks after) for MK8. Also the baseball game defense was something.

I'm waiting for someone to call out Mike's Vita bs.

Nintendo could nuke an entire continent full of cute babies and animals and CJ would defend it but at least Mike hasn't said much anything and the Vita has bombed already.

EDIT: Also ROFL at Phil saying "yea-yea-yea-yea-hmmhm" in response to CJ commending Samsung's low latency Game Mode. Phil sounded exactly like someone who had zero idea what was being discussed. Phil: Play in Game Mode or turn off all image enhancements manually. And please for the love of the Holy Mystical Greg's Eyebrows don't have any motion enhancements/smoothing turned on when gaming.

Yeah, I...I know.

I don't really have any axe to grind on the Nintendo stuff. They just seldom make things that interest me anymore. The ribbing is all in fun. People like what they like.

Now, I need to get back to that LittleBigPlanet DC Comics level pack.

(also, the Vita is awesome. I may not love Infamous Second Son, but it's a pretty goddamn impressive handheld game. :P )

Go right ahead and do it then... what bs?

There is literally only two things Mike likes other than porn and alcohol and they are Vita and Vita Remote Play. He's not getting paid to masturbate and drink but some people are suggesting he's getting a little financial encouragement from Sony to talk about Vita and its features.

Maybe it's just a function of Vita ownership, but avid users seems to be incredibly zealous. There's a recent thread where the OP said he had joined the Church of Vita, and the comparison to religious indoctrination seems incredibly apt, given the propensity to evangelize seemingly every game. Ownership functions as enlightenment. I also picture enthusiastic Vita users as horrible gluttons, shoveling stale donuts into their gaping maws. What it comes down to is that I've just used a faith metaphor and a food metaphor, so I think I'm now a games journalist.

I haven't been keeping track of Mike's "transgressions" (not because I'm not petty, but because I'm lazy), but recently he sang the praises of Steam World Dig, lamenting "Why didn't anyone tell me this was so good?" But they did, Mike. You just didn't care until it was on the Vita. Another stale donut for your heap, adherent.

Also, I was pointing out that it's a bit ridiculous to make such a big deal about CJ defending Nintendo when every single person on P1P (and the planet) has some sort of irrational stance when it comes to a particular thing. Do you expect Phil to be objective about Mega Man or misplaced 80s nostalgia? Would you trust what Greg has to say about Canada?

I am not alleging impropriety. There's no evidence that Mike is on the take from Sony. That's insulting. Also, SCEA doesn't care enough about the Vita to bribe anyone.

It took 100+ pages, but I can officially no longer tell which posts are genuine and which are parody.

In other words, this thread is awesome.

100+ pages?

Ugh. Don't tell me you also go for that 50ppp bullshit, too?

Fuck me, P1Podcast continues to go further downhill.

Have you watched any of the live shows? Judging from the video quality of Mike's stream it's safe to assume his internet connection can barely handle 50pp with images and avatars disabled.

Show me your HD gamer badge and the paperwork from the year it was issued along with a valid photo id or I will make more fun of you.

Well, I will admit to occasionally turning on that Motion Plus when I want my Hollywood blockbusters to look like Mexican soap operas.

Do you expect Phil to be objective about Mega Man or misplaced 80s nostalgia?.

In my defense, there are plenty of mediocre to downright awful Mega Man games.
