Is Kevin trolling when he says he finds old stuff unrelatable given that he hosts a retro game podcast? I honestly can't tell when someone is being sarcastic on the internet nowadays.

holy shit is this guy for real.....

Pretty sure film making peaked in the 1970's, though if he is serious about the Fast and Furious stuff I doubt he'd be able to sit through something like Chinatown.

Is Kevin a satirical character in general?

I come back to P1P every now and then, so I don't have much experience with him. But every time I hear him, he sounds like some Hollywood Handbook-esque caricature of a videogame nerd.

Listening to him reminds me a lot of Dan Rykert. Just guys whose tastes stopped evolving when they were 11 or so. It's annoying at first because you think "fuck me these guys can't be real" then you realize they are and it becomes adorable.

I honestly don't watch movies made before the 70's mostly because I am into action and sci-fi movies. The newer movies appeal to me more due to the improved special effects. I love the Fast and Furious franchise for real, but also my favorite moves of all time are the Back to the Future trilogy.

The comments about Star Trek II were sarcastic. I should do a better job making that more obvious next time I make comments like that.

And I love old games from the 80's and 90's stuff I grew up with (born in 1986). I have no nostalgia or fond memories of music and movies of the 60s and 70s. Still I can watch great movies like 12 Angry Men and enjoy them, they are just few and far between.

Watch Barbarella (it's on Netflix) and revel in how good 60s sci fi can be.

Bullitt, 1968.

Tough to beat that particular car chase scene--even with improved special effects. You don't need CGI to double-clutch a Mustang like a fucking boss.

btw, I don't *entirely* disagree about old movies. Some of the flicks that are venerated as classics are unwatchable garbage to me in 2015 (Casablanca, Gone with the Wind...). But I'm willing to bet that the great:dogshit ratio in pre-1970s films is damn near the same as it is in the modern era.

This really only drives me crazy when it comes to music, for some reason. I feel bad for people who fail to recognize that great music--more of it than ever--is released every year. And you can STILL listen to all your old favorites, while enjoying a whole new catalog of terrific tunes. Some people think entertainment is some kind of zero-sum game.

Yeah but real talk for a second, The Decemberists are cutter music at worst and nowhere near as clever as they think they are at best.

Sorry Mike.

That new Dylan Sinatra album though...yeah buddy!

Casablanca is great (I bet Kevin loves the recent remake, Out Cold). Everything Peck ever did holds up perfectly well. Cagney films are almost all totally watchable and amazing.

To be fair, I forget who it was, but it wasn't Kevin, who said the original Godfather is unwatchable. That's an interesting comment.
I think that was Greg. lol

I don't know if I agree or disagree, but my only point would be that someone looking at games from the 80s and 90s could say exactly the same thing. So it's just amusing that Kevin, who runs a podcast venerating old games, would have a problem with old movies.

And honestly, with Dan Ryckert from Giantbomb saying things like he can't "read" foreign movies because it's too distracting, I honestly have no idea if people with public personas on the internet are being serious anymore.

Why would someone live the gimmick?

I think it is just a case of us liking different stuff. Nothing wrong with having different tastes and disagreeing on topics. I can respect both sides.

The reality era.

I don't remember if I said it was unwatchable, but I do find it hard to sit through nowadays. I'm not saying it's a bad film. It's just something really have to want. :)

Sometimes I wonder if people feel that way about old podcasts like Kevin does about old movies. A new generation of listeners growing up not knowing how good gaming podcast can really be. Breaks my heart :(

I guess I'm just tired of the people who make games with the most resources at their disposal, like Jaffe, or the people who write and speak about them on the largest stages like IGN or GiantBomb or Kotaku being proudly stuck in some sort of arrested development where they only care about action movies, comic books, wrestling, anime, and sci-fi. I'm not directing this at anyone* in this thread, but the collective at large. Sometimes you just want to shake someone and shout "Challenge yourself! Read a book that isn't about a war, or is non-fiction, or about video games! Watch a movie that doesn't have a gun or explosion in it! Stop hiding behind your 'opinions' and get some taste!"

I don't know. I've been playing video games all my life and I've never felt like a part of the community because of this stuff.

*I'm really not. I listen to just four gaming podcasts, and they are this one, Back in My Play, Retronauts, and Nintendo World Report. I'm a happy Patreon member as well. Heck, I had to pause the pinball talk on Episode 153 just to write this.

Bummer mik wasn't on, but Kevin stepped up to provide some controversy. Surprised the other hosts didn't give him more shit for coming out as a scalper.

Is this supposed to be shameful or something?

I personally don't think so, I was just stirring shit, but people have been talking about it lately in light of people getting their orders for limited edition DSs cancelled, people asking high prices for them on Amazon, etc.

Wasn't GameCube VC promised, or at least hinted at, before? Nintendo can name their price for Rogue Squadron if they ever get around to it, I loved that game. I got it for Christmas the year it came out and was still playing it pretty regularly when I sold my GameCube to get a DS.

No. It'll happen, though, given what they're doing with Wii games on Wii U and the fact that the Wii U has the hardware to run GameCube game. Like, if you really wanted, you could do some searching and get those games running right now. Or you can wait for something more official.

I bought it from best buy not sure if I wanted it. I didn't buy 3 to sell on eBay. I bought one and decided I didn't want it. I don't buy shit that is rare just to sell it.

Yeah, didn't mean to call you out, just poking fun at how people get bent out of shape when mik pays a cent for a Humble Bundle or whatever.

Greg, if you continue on with Rogue Legacy, keep an eye out for Vampire Runes or perhaps equipment with Vampirism. If you're lucky enough to get one, you gain HP with each enemy kill, which does *wonders* for your survivability, especially early in the game.

I think I did find some sort of vampire equipment. I'll have to save up for it. Thanks for the tip!

Ha, that film discussion at the start of the show was just bizarre.

It sounded like even the participants were confused about what was happening.

Edit: I'm fairly certain that the chances of the Vita or its potential successor selling 30m in Japan are minimal.

I was totally confused during the film talk.

Although I do think it's fair to say that Netflix has produced some high quality stuff. Not sure what was so terrible about that discussion.

I like Kevin on the show. he's like my twin except for the comments about not liking old stuff. i like old stuff.

I wasn't promising it would be successful, but I am sure they will give it one more shot. No time soon. Maybe in 2-3 years.

I don't doubt that Sony could potentially try again with a handheld device, but the idea that perv games and niche RPGs could cause a device to sell 30m in Japan was a tad OTT. The Vita has only sold 3.6m there.

Kevin fully knows & appreciates the greatness of Fast & Furious, so he's alright in my books.

Edit: In this context F&F refers to the franchise & not the 4th movie, in case anyone was confused.

I wasn't saying that it would sell with those games. I think Sony has shown with the PS4 that they can learn from their mistakes and open their wallet for exclusives that can sell consoles.

IF, and it is a big IF, Sony can get Monster Hunter to be exclusive on the next handheld, that would be a good start.

I'm the same way. I remember a recent episode of the Bombcast in which Jane Austen came up as part of a Saints Row IV discussion and Dan Ryckert said "I don't know who that is." My brain did a backflip.

How can I take your opinions on videogames seriously when you clearly have a severe lack of cultural context for discussing them as an art form?

What?! There's no excuse to not know who Jane Austen is. Especially if you're in the game industry.

Stride & Prejudice

No matter how hard the Gamecube failed, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, and Wind Waker have a very special place in my heart.

Man, Fast and the Furious was the first movie I ever saw on DVD. I've never seen any of the sequels, but with how ridiculous they sound, I feel like i'm missing out now.

Getting Monhun on a Sony platform again would probably require a financial burden, especially if the platform sales (and potential buyers) are significantly better with Nintendo, by almost a factor of 5x for just the handhelds alone. And given that it's still not a sure thing in the west and the PS4 is performing poorly in Japan, it'd basically be sending the game out to die if it ended up on a home console.

Regardless, i'd probably buy it on any platform though. I know i'll get at least 200 hours minimum playtime from a mainline MonHun title.

I honestly don't see Sony making another handheld for a very long time, especially with the way it's currently propositioned alongside the PS4 as a companion system. Honestly, the best-case scenario (and probably the most financially stable) would probably be a more powerful Nintendo handheld successor that would allow for some ports to the Vita. The Vita is good enough to last at least another 6-ish years easily as a PS4 accessory that gets some cross-buy games.

youre my boy blu!

as for music, yeah, i have several friends who refuse to acknowledge good music can be made in the 21st century

To add on to the tips, I don't know how far you've advanced, but I found it best to focus on survivability and more gold drop upgrades. It helps make almost every run net you an upgrade or two at the very least.

New to the thread, keep up the great work P1P!

I've heard alot of complaints on the enemy turn times in Codename Steam. While I completely agree they are barely tolerable, the whole point is that the enemy units are moving around in turn, providing you a chance to spot their location as they scuttle about. The New 3ds is not going to *fix* the "load time" because its not a load time at all.

Maybe they aren't load times and certainly not to the extent that you hear about on different podcasts.
But there is no reason that it takes 2-3 seconds for an alien to complete their turn when it only has the command of "stay stationary in overwatch" for the whole duration of a level.

I completely agree they take way too long to execute actions or set themselves to 'wait' ,It was just evident to me that it wasn't simply the processor grinding away.

Thing is with Sony mobile struggling where does that leave Sony in Japan? One where they potentially have no platform of note in Japan? In a position not terribly far away from MS?
