More than willing to pressure CJ into a DQ IX game club even if no one else wants to join we can do it in 2-3 episodes at major chapters.

I guess we just need some DQ IX experts to let us know where the 3 acts start/end.

Episode 457: Showtime Pizza?

This week! We start off with some Gamescom stuff (CRACKDOWN!), Time’s Virtual Reality cover, and Bungie recasting Dinklage. Then we go into a light dusting of what we’ve been playing, including Rare Replay, F1 2015, 3D Streets of Rage 2, King’s Quest, Picross e6 and Galak-Z. So, you guys mentioned the old Kings quest games. I've never played any of them. Are they connected? Or can I just jumped in the middle and play any random one? If so, what's the one Kings quest game I should play?

Why not play the new one? It's quite good. Aside from that I can't help you.

Also, I realize we didn't mention Scalebound. So I'm mentioning it here. Scalebound. (Sorry, I've gone back to not paying attention to Platinum again.)

Well, I like adventure games anyway, and I figured it'd be neat to play a King's Quest game before I play the new one. Also, I'm kind of burnt out on the episodic nature of adventure games, and I'd rather wait until it is fully released before buying it (same with something like Life Is Strange. That, and I hope for the potential of a physical release).

Sidenote, and someone can fact check me if they are crazy, but I think this episode was the first use of the crickets sound effect since an Animal Crossing discussion a few years ago after Phil made a joke about Ringo being the least valuable beetle on the island.

The games are connected and you can buy all 8 of them from GOG for less than €20. If you wait for a sale then the price will be about half as much. How familiar are you with playing old adventure games using text parsers?

Very. While I wasn't a Sierra player back in the day, I did play all the LucasArts ones and one of my favorite text-parser games is Roberta Williams' The Colonel's Bequest. I also played the first Police Quest which, if I remember, is a text-parser.

The interface in the first four games are similar to Police Quest. 5-8 uses the standard point-and-click system instead. I played all the games as a child, but I don't think I ever beat any of them. Partly because my lack of patience, but also because of my limited vocabulary in a foreign language.

I remember liking them, but I have no idea if they hold up well. Maybe we can do a let's play together with the P1P crew once they're done with Bully and whatever else they promised their backers.
 
The King's Quest games are definitely worth playing. Just remember that the first few are very early Sierra games. The parser can be really finicky.

They are connected, but not in a way that you lose much if you don't play them sequentially. Some of the characters are related to each other, and some of the lands you visit will be mentioned in other games.

The first King's Quest game I played was the sixth one, and I think it is widely regarded as the best. I'm not sure how well it holds up now, but to a 10-year-old with an entire summer vacation to play it with a friend, it was really magical. It draws on a lot of fantasy tropes and has some fairly epic puzzles, so if you let your imagination run wild I think you will get fairly immersed in it. That might be the 10-year-old in me talking, though.

I picked up the entire KQ collection either through a Humble Bundle or on steam/GOG for pennies a year or so ago, so cost will be a very small barrier to entry.

Doesn't seem like there's much to be said. He said something really dumb things, it got attention, he got fired.


I was surprised no one was bothered at all by the Might No. 9 stuff. I basically agree with everything Sewart said, but the fact that it's a Kickstarter and people found out about the delay from sources other than the company they've already given money to seems pretty crappy, especially when they're also running the Kickstarter for the Legends-type game.

I still haven't given to a Kickstarter but I would have been annoyed at the lack of communication.

I don't think Phil is associated with the game any more, and I think he said something along the lines of it became a mess after 8-4 stopped working on it. And they did talk about it for awhile if you didn't listen to the episode, they just said they didn't see much wrong with what went down.

Did some work for them.

Two years ago.

During the couple months prior to and the month of the actual Kickstarter campaign.

I have precisely nothing to do with MN9 these days.

During that time I was also working for 8-4, who was running the campaign at the time and as far as I know is also not affiliated with the game now.

Regarding the release date shift, it's unfortunate but these things happen. Hell, two other games I backed around the time of MN9 (Shantae: Half-Genie Hero and Hyper Light Drifter) are a year past their due-by dates, and I have no idea when to expect either of those to arrive.

I can chalk up the announcement of it as being a cross-wiring of the game now having two distribution channels (Kickstarter and a traditional publisher). It would have been nice if the backers had be informed first, but that retailers found out first through the publisher could be a simple case of miscommunication. As someone who backed the game for a relatively large amount, who I heard about the delay from doesn't bother me.

The real problem is Comcept denying the delay rumors only to confirm it a few days later when the Red Ash Kickstarter ended. I believe I pointed out how skeezy this was on the show. Just like when Double Fine waited until the Massive Chalice Kickstarter ended before coming out to say it needed more money for Broken Age.

Not to mention how horribly run the Red Ash campaign was. Again, I believe I'm repeating myself, but it was pretty clear that 8-4 wasn't involved with Red Ash--that campaign was not handled with nearly the professionalism as the Mighty No. 9 one.

Man, you just don't go get a job working for Nintendo and then hit up podcasts talking like you represent the company. That's just dumb.

Although anyone wanna hear about the inner workings of Nintendo Power?!

To be honest, through, my very tangential dealing with Nintendo, they were pretty cool--if not occasionally stubborn--to deal with. They also made sure we were able to have a final few issues so we could go out on a high note.

I think I'll play them backwards until I get frustrated or bored with them. 6 then 5 then 4 (I've heard good things about 6 and 4, I think).

But first I'm going to play through Gabriel Knight, which I think Mike said is one of his favorites?

More than Mario 64 and Zelda OoT, Quest 64 was the N64 game I wanted to play the most (owned a PS1). I was disappointed to learn later in life that it was bad. Perhaps one days I'll give it a shot and live out a long lost dream

Screw you guys, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is awesome!

Kevin is 100% right about the smaller New 3DS. I recently imported a Japanese model and I am very impressed. It's the first Nintendo product in a while that feels expensive when you hold it. Further, it's the first handheld since the SP that I feel like would survive being flung at a wall. I really hope Kevin is right and NoA releases it here because it's the definitive version of the system.

Also, you absolutely do not need to enforce your copyright to maintain it. On the other hand, you do need to enforce trademarks, so that might be where Greg got that idea.
