I still haven't made it through the GOTY show, but god dammit, Badge Arcade. "It has really good writing!" based on what? Cmon now.
 
What did I just hear...Splatoon didn't sell consoles in Japan? :o

It's the best selling WiiU game in Japan and carried the system alone for 2015. But obviously it's no replacement for a system having complete 3rd party support.
 
These guys really opened my eyes to patreon this episode. I enjoy the content they create immensely. I love BIMP, G16, and P1P enough to toss a couple dollars at them.

Being the highest selling console in Japan by 750k units doesn't seem all that awful to me. I'm not a Japanese expert like Kevin though.

I think the GameCube sold around 4 million in Japan over its life, so the WiiU will probably finish around that same number, depending on when the NX releases.

I do? There are very few things I hate. One of them are shallow blanket statements without anything to back said statement up.

I can only guess it is about the VR stuff? How I don't understand how people are angry at the $600 price point?

Totally possible I did a poor job making my point. I meant to point out that I don't understand peoples anger when something they want is price out of their budget. Like they are angry just because they can not buy something on day 1.

If anything, I feel like I am over protective of gamer's and their rights, especially when it comes to their purchases. I think you have all heard me rant too much on how I feel about digital rights.

It didn't make the console successful. It sits at 3 million units after being out for 3 years. Did Splatoon help with consoles sales? For sure. But it did not give the console a big enough boost to make it successful.

The discussion we were having was "What does NX need to be successful?" A new Splatoon, ported Zelda WiiU, and Mario Maker isn't going to do it.

Compared to what? The PS4 which just started getting real Japanese software support in 2015? Also don't forget the WiiU came out a year earlier. PS4 had a strong end of 2015 and there are a ridiculously long list of Japanese developed games coming to it in 2016.

I will agree that the money is on the phones and to a lesser extent the 3DS/Vita.

To me there are varying degrees of what success in video games means depending on what market you're in, who your audience is, etc. Is the Wii U going to catch the Xbox One and PS4 based off of one title - unlikely. But, Nintendo has several million-selling franchises on the Wii U and that is something a lot of game makers on other platforms would be very happy with. Same with Amiibo - despite the Wii U's sales, Nintendo has been able to eke out a profitable business. Being number 1 in that business would be good but Nintendo takes gambles that other hardware manufacturers don't/wouldn't take. Sometimes, like with the Wii, it pays off - other times, not so much (GameCube/Wii U). I love that Nintendo takes those risks and it looks like NX will have another out-of-the-box interface, and I'm more than fine with that. :)

The NX does need more than Wii U ports to be successful. Nintendo has been running many games as "live services" though and I would love to see those somehow continued in a way that I could play them on NX. If that's backwards compatibility, great - they don't need to do re-releases. But man the Wii U has had some of the best games of last gen and it'd be a shame if they stayed walled to that platform.

Probably FFXV? The problem with the Sony platforms in Japan is the lack of big titles. Sure, there are a lot of titles coming up, but they just don't spike system sales. The fact that many of these titles are also on PS3/Vita presents another problem. Why bother upgrading?

Nintendo's consoles have the opposite problem: it's mostly big titles, but a dearth of games means there's nothing to maintain those hardware boosts. NX needs to fix that to succeed, and, if the NX has some portable component, then that's probably easiest in Japan where the 3DS is very clearly the dominant traditional platform.
 
I guess I'm curious as to what "success" in Japan looks like? If around 3.5 - 4 million isn't a success, what is? Seems like things have only gotten harder for home consoles in Japan post GameCube yet the WiiU is going to sell about the same number of units. What's a reasonable expectation for the NX?

Just messing with you. I find it funny because you seem to be doing this in every episode you show up in. I don't seriously believe you hate gamers and love whenever you're on the podcast regardless (more retro game talk is awesome).
 
According to Wikipedia, PS3 sold 6.3M in Japan in its first 4.5 years. Don't know how reliable that data is - or source - but 3M in three years doesn't seem terrible,especially if they've been trending higher.

I actually agreed with Kevin's point on the PS3. Launching at $599 wasn't good, but it was necessary to get it started given the situation they were in. Had they waited to launch it only when Blu-ray and the Cell processor's manufacturing allowed for a much cheaper price then it would've been dead on arrival. It needed to be $599 in 2006 with middling sales so that it could be $299 in 2009 with great sales.
 
Sony was fortunate to be the market leader in the previous generation, otherwise the PS3 would have been a disaster.

There was a point where it had become a viable also-ran console, but to Sony's credit they did a lot of work building the library and really competing. (I see MS putting in a similar effort this gen, but I don't think they're going to get the results that Sony did... the less powerful machine is one factor, and I think there's a lot more goodwill towards Sony).

To the point on the Oculus, I agree with the conclusion the podcast kind of reached -- that Oculus is playing the long game with this technology. I also agree with the idea that $600 is an easier pill to swallow for a PC gamer. In part because PC gamers spend more on hardware. I think one other aspect in Oculus' favour (vs. the PSVR) is that I think there will be fewer questions about obsolescence, because it's a peripheral for a platform that won't be phased out (whereas the PSVR will be launched 3+ years into the PS4 cycle... hopefully it will work with Sony's next-gen hardware an Sony will be clear about that).

I thought Kevin was talking about metal gear v not Zelda triforce heroes. Rising came out in 13, got to try a demo with ground zeroes and it had a middling online experience that really requires you to be connected.
 
Dare I ask how much Greg's new PC is worth?

Also, I'm going to go to Boston and start stalking Kevin so I can pick up after him anytime he drops $4.

Yikes. I was pricing what I felt was a decently powered gaming PC... I find it's hard to get the total appreciably below $1000CDN.

What pushed up the price for you? Big-time GPU?

The i5 6600k and the GeForce GTX 970 are the two expensive bits.

Just a webcam pointing to a table like Kevin's setup would be enough, but I understand if you can't do it.

I hadn't built PC's in nearly 10 years until my little nephew wanted to build one earlier this year and I helped him out. It's actually more fun that I remembered.
 
Hearing Greg talk about it made it seem that (as expected) it is a super personal story that will affect those with kids or those who have had personal experiences with cancer a ton. As was mentioned, I'm not sure if I would want to expose myself to that, even if it is a well crafted experience.
 
I agree with CJ in his response to Greg's mistakenly using the PS4 Share Button. Which controllers had the pause button on the left side? I'm fairly sure they've all been predominately on the right side whenever there's been both a Select/Pause button.

However, having said that, I suffer from the same problem as Greg (yep, despite what I just wrote). I hit that Share button more times than a care to admit in situations where I wanted to pause.

Don't know why. Do. Quite a bit.
 
I may be the only person who didn't have any issues with the original US Saturn pad. The shoulder buttons were a bit cruddy, I guess... but really didn't have a ton of games that used them.

? If I said that I meant it more as an observation that he hasn't been on in the podcast's recent history than "he's off the show, that guy!" He's still on the weekly emails about scheduling and we'd love to have him back if things were able to align.

I'd support a patreon for a podcast to have the guys purely recount stories from their ziff davis days. As someone who was subbed to EGM, EGM2/Expert Gamer/Gamenow (lol) for a good period of time so it'd be a lot of fun to hear more about things that happened when they were all working together.

The regular recording time just happens to coincide with when I get to see my kids. Tough to reconcile that one.

I've been listening to pretty much since the beginning of P1P and I remember when Mike first came on - I was like "who's this guy? He fits right in like he has always been there!"

It's unbelievable how amazing this show is and even more amazing to think that it's longer running than any other media I have partaken in.
 
I understand what a challenge it must be to get everyone together, what with their different schedules and all, but is there any chance this could get worked out so that recording could happen on a different day/night? No offense to the great guests that have filled in but the show really isn't the same when Mike is never on.
