The more time I spend with the PRO and the more games I discover, the more I love it! Games look and feel so good to play that I literally found myself trying games just to check them out and not being able to put the controller down! I'm playing way more games now than I was a month ago and having a blast with many of them. With the best integrations, it is just a
sublime experience and it's actually somewhat surprising that it feels that much better than the base PS5 to me. I didn't really expect as much given the specs going in but the sum of it's parts literally elevates PS5 gaming to the next level.
Some context here, I am probably
THE prime target for what the PS5 PRO is about. Highest quality "living room" gaming experience with sharp 4K images and smooth 60+ performance optimized for latest HDMI 2.1 TVs with VRR. I am gaming on what I feel is THE best TV money can buy today: the 97" G4 OLED and with the highest quality audio in a 13 channel Dolby Atmos home theater (Note that the TV was a new purchase that aligned with the arrival of the PS5 PRO). To say that the PS5 PRO experience in my setup is breathtaking at times is an understatement.
Some of the highlights include Stellar Blade, FFVII Rebirth, RE Village and RE4 Remake, Spiderman 2, TLOU Pt2, GT7, Jedi Survivor, Hogwarts Legacy, and Call of Duty BO6 to name a few. Everything looks so sharp and detailed with high resolution (even in the performance modes), vivid colors, and framerates that exceed 60 in most of the games I've tried which makes playing them feel so good. To get this level of performance (approaching 120fps) but with such high IQ/resolution even on a screen as big as mine is exactly what I had hoped my $700 would get me.
The difference is now easily felt in the majority of enhanced titles to the point where I would say it's near impossible for me to go back to the base PS5 (at least in my main HT setup. I actually still have my base PS5 in a bedroom for my kids and it's fine there). Also, shoutout to
boost mode which has also improved the experience on many games that struggled on the base PS5 (Elden Ring, Witcher 3, Robocop, Immortals of Avieum, Cygni: All Guns Blazing just to name a few).
I've always felt that the difference would be larger with the PS5 PRO compared to the PS4 PRO despite that the fact that the PS4 PRO was a larger gap on the spec sheet. In short, additional RT and PSSR could add much more to IQ and graphics fidelity (better A/Bs). Also the performance jump is actually meaningful now because:
- 4K is not a new target so the PS5 PRO doesn't have to waste cycles trying to just push resolution like the PS4 PRO did going from 1080p to 4K
- The vast majority of games today are actually GPU bound and not CPU bound as was the case during the PS4 era. Since the largest improvements are on the GPU side of both PRO consoles, that difference is more meaningful on games today
- We now have new tools such as VRR being much more prevalent to unlock framerates and get more performance benefits than was the case during the PS4 era.
Keep in mind what I said at the start...the more time that passed the better my impression of the system as I was able to see what it is capable of in a variety of titles. If you were to ask me week 1, I would have given the PS5 PRO a
7.5/10. Obviously it's not perfect and the rollout from Sony was flawed in many ways. There should never be games shipping on the PRO that are worst than the base console versions and there were a number of games missing patches at the launch that we really wanted to see. Of course, PSSR has been rather hit or miss overall which isn't the fault of the PRO console itself but rather the software and QA on the part of the developers primarily. However, even in games that are labeled as problematic for PSSR (i.e. Black Ops 6 and Jedi Survivor), the good outweigh the bad and the results are still noticeably improved over the base PS5 (disclaimer: I'm playing Jedi Survivor in quality mode which looks much better than the performance mode and still feels pretty good to play).
All in all, today I would give the PS5 PRO a solid
8.5/10. It simply invites me to play and enjoy more games and delivers a superior experience to any other console out there. The best part, this is the
WORST that the PRO will ever be as it will continually improve over time. PSSR by definition will only improve and evolve over time, perf improvements will get better as developers get more familiar with the hardware, and the brand new games over the next few years will better showcase what the PS5 PRO can do to improve the core PS5 experience. It's still early days but the future is looking brighter as we go. Now please give me solid patches for Helldivers 2, FFXVI, and Black Myth Wukong and I will be fully satisfied
