Seems like everybody these days is busy telling everyone how much they love themself or how everyone needs to love themself. Self love seems like a great thing. But no one really talks about what “self love” actually means or how to do it. Most everything I see about loving yourself is just about being satisfied with who you are regardless of your circumstances.
If you’re overweight, you love your body. “Mom bod”. “Dad bod”. Etc.
If you’re behavior or emotions are an issues, you’re supposed to love yourself regardless.
Theres something true there. You certainly don’t want to hate yourself. But I think very often “self love” becomes excuse making. The point of loving something is taking care of it. If you love your body, you don’t treat it like garbage. Just like if you love another person, you don’t treat them badly. Same for your mental/emotional well being. You don’t love someone else or yourself by letting them do whatever they want.
Self love, like all forms of actual love involves work. Sacrifice. Effort. It’s not about feeling good all the time. It’s about doing your best for someone else or for yourself.
