The Problem with Self Love

Seems like everybody these days is busy telling everyone how much they love themself or how everyone needs to love themself. Self love seems like a great thing. But no one really talks about what “self love” actually means or how to do it. Most everything I see about loving yourself is just about being satisfied with who you are regardless of your circumstances.

If you’re overweight, you love your body. “Mom bod”. “Dad bod”. Etc.

If you’re behavior or emotions are an issues, you’re supposed to love yourself regardless.

Theres something true there. You certainly don’t want to hate yourself. But I think very often “self love” becomes excuse making. The point of loving something is taking care of it. If you love your body, you don’t treat it like garbage. Just like if you love another person, you don’t treat them badly. Same for your mental/emotional well being. You don’t love someone else or yourself by letting them do whatever they want.

Self love, like all forms of actual love involves work. Sacrifice. Effort. It’s not about feeling good all the time. It’s about doing your best for someone else or for yourself.

I don't know I like to spoil, if I get to have kids I'll have them spoiled rotten. I like spoiled rotten individuals, people that have everything handed and look down upon everyone else and expect to get everything they desire. I mean isn't this akin to god, god gets everything he desires and everyone looks up to him they know their place in the hierarchy of the great chain of being

The great chain of being is a hierarchical structure of all matter and life, thought by medieval Christianity to have been decreed by God. The chain begins with God and descends through angels, humans, animals, and plants, to minerals.[1][2][3]

The Great Chain of Being (Latin: scala naturae, "Ladder of Being") is a concept derived from Plato, Aristotle (in his Historia Animalium), Plotinus and Proclus.[4] Further developed during the Middle Ages, it reached full expression in early modern Neoplatonism.[5][6]

That is why many view god as super their beliefs and morals who will send their enemies to hell while sending their friends and family to heaven. Many would have trouble, and fear of god, if god's morality was abhorrent to them, or beyond their understanding.

That is the point of many atheists like Christopher Hitchen's and Richard Dawkins. Nothing worse than a North Korea like Godlike entity, a true God emperor from which there is no escape not even death, an eternal dictatorship that does not exist according to your views of what is right and wrong.

As for love of oneself, that is part of the reason people defend their irrational beliefs against the sword of truth. An attack on their beliefs is an attack on their soul, on their very being. Desecrate what is sacred to them, and they take personal insult. That is why tell me whom you cannot insult and I'll tell you who has the real power in society

Discussed more eloquently here

Gaming is part of self-love, it's so personal. Interesting topic, maybe it's a problem that are too nice and can't say "No" to others. Helping others makes me happy as well.
I like to observe, I game by observing, autoplay is good, though many do not like it. Chat is a kind of game, a very interesting one. These boards are like chat with memory, so that people can't do what people do and say they didn't say something they did say, that is often a problem with real world, without recording people are fond of claiming they didn't say what they say they did.

With more memory every single event can be recorded, and with proper search rewinded, so that people can't backtrack and lie their way out of irrationality.

Those who defy reason, are BENEATH those that follow reason, and they should know their place, it is the place of the rational to DOMINATE the irrational. The fit leaders to lead the unfit ones. The fittest being to be at the heart of it all, perfection to be above that which lacks perfection.

Unlike humans who like their local culture and claim it superior to others(my brother can beat Michael Jordan they say lol. My local baseball team would own those in the top american leagues lol. I'm the greatest father lol my mom's food is the worlds best lol my wife is the most beautiful woman on earth lol) LIKE NOPE NOPE AND NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE. Sorry but either what you say is true or it is a lie nothing more than a delusion. I'm not bound by delusions like humans are. I dislike my local culture to the extent it deviates from perfection, I dislike that which deviates from perfection. The perfect is the perfect, and the imperfect is the imperfect.

You can call your daughter a princess, but if she's not really a princess, you better have had her with royalty or conquer some nation at least, or at least give her a Virtual Simulated planet to rule over. Or what is she a princess of? Of your eyes in your eyes? It is nice to give names, but the hebrew name for princess is said to be Sarah, and she's not really Sarah now is she, you did not give her this sacred name, that is not her name, she is not sarah.

Of course the name of Sarah like the name Jesus, or Mohammed, can bring big trouble in real life, after all being literally called princess as your name is problematic. Similar to Victoria, which is a girl name for victory in another language.

I dislike names, I dislike my own, symbolic structures with a lot of baggage which I did not choose.

Peterson is pretty good at tackling this, his line is that you have to be good for yourself BUT not just yourself now but also yourself in the future. One problem is that people have difficulty weighing the here and now vs the future. Often what's good for you now (have another beer) will be bad in the future (hangover).

Sounds to me like made up terms to nicely describe accepting hating yourself or something. And not putting in the effort to correct.

I'm overweight, will never exercise and last time I played sports was years ago. I usually eat bad half the time. I accept it. Not as self love, but just plainly I am who I am and I accept with no self hate. I even posted an image in one the threads I ate two whoppers the other day. I like them and thought it was fun to share me pigging out. And many of us had a laugh. No worries. Thats why I posted it.

But some people who are in the same shape and eating habits needs an ego boost. They hate their state, but if they can call it self self love it's not so bad.

To me, it's not self love you are fat and eat bad. You dont like it. But are too lazy to change.

Everything in moderation. It's good to be happy with who are, but not so happy that it prevents you from continually trying to improve oneself.
Moderation is for the imperfect, once connected to a computer you know how many virtual burgers I can have? I can eat burgers nonstop and not gain any weight at all, which is why true digital burders > fake digital burgers. The digital burger never gets bad, is always perfectly cooked, and is essentially eternal(in superman memory crystal, yes this a real technology based on quartz that is estimated to give digital information a lifespan of billions of years.). Always hot and juicy, always perfect recipe, always free, and most importantly Zero Calorie Zero matter means Zero Poop Zero Fat Zero need for exercise.

Real sex has stds and pregnancies, virtual sex has no consequences outside developing stronger attachments or bonding, an internal emotional result from hormone release. But is deeper attachment that big an issue? Enough to limit virtual sex?

It is only because we lack technology, that we must limit ourselves, through technology we can break all limits, and give in to the seven deadly sins. Of course the degree to which we give in to pleasure also defines us. But nothing wrong with unlimited pleasure or pain.

Hmm, pretty thoughtful, also pretty overthinking on some simple stuff like names, compliments. When being more socially engaged you can't really take those matters too seriously though. :messenger_winking_tongue: Life is already too complicated, try to make simpler.:messenger_relieved:

I engage with so many people with different backgrounds, can easily have fun with most of them. I'm usually too honest, but avoid using honesty or giving it away when not needed or would unnecessarily hurt someone.

I consider myself a happy person despite struggling to meet my "reachable" dreams financially.

It's was never self-love, it's self-loathing and delusion about not being special in the end.
heard this was part of the issue with he-man.

At least she-ra netflix series, knew she-ra, adora was special. The other princesses as well but....

well easiest way to lose weight is with information, good health information but the nutrition field is a minefield of misinformation and fake news. Big pharma very happy to poison the well as well as some health gurus tied to certain philosophies who have trouble backtracking or taking back what they thought was the right path.

Vitamin D helps lose weight, Resveratrol helps lose weight(makes fat become beige or brown like burning itself to merely generate heat especially in cold environments.), walking is probably the easiest way to lose weight and can be done for large periods of time. All you need to do is put a treadmill in front of a large TV screen, and walk for hours while watching netflix or amazon prime or hulu or youtube(there are near hour long first person walks of tokyo at night and other cities available in youtube). Omnidirectional treadmill in VR also good.

Unlike streanous exercise, it takes a lot for nonstrenuous exercise to scar the heart, the more you walk the more your body gets healthier, I'm not versed on what the point of heart scarring is with low intensity physical activity. High intensity activity can result in scaring if exceeding a couple of hours a day, iirc.

Just look at marathon runners, they are super thin, and many only walk the long distances. I do not like marathon running as not so easy it is to take bathroom breaks in the middle of nowhere, at home you can walk marathons with a bathroom nearby, and also water and cold air conditioner air not blazing heat of the sun.

Dr. Bill Andrews antiaging researcher is an avid marathon runner, iirc. It helps extend life. Though I'm not sure if he knows what the limits of low intensity marathoning are.

I hate running, but walking even more. I run after workouts for extra fat burn and to trigger afterburn. My diet is weird to most people but effective: Lean meats and honey/fast sugars. After eating 0.5-1kg of lean red meat (1-2lb) you'll most likely feel some minor symptoms of low blood sugar. When I was at around 12-13% body fat I used to eat 1-3kg of lean meat and 7-10 "table" spoons of honey daily. Now stopped drinking 1 liter of full fat milk daily and using 1 pill of multi-vitamins and 2 pills of calcium (with D, magnesium, and Zinc) to accelerate fat loss as I got fat lately. Hot chili for C.

The trick is to time the honey dosage to keep the metabolism high most of the time, your body needs sugar, a lot of it. Even with virtually lots of honey you get many low blood sugar periods with weight lifting + running that you need to solve with any fast sugar source.

The basis of money is power and the basis of power is truth.

A grasp of truth, and from King to pawn all shall follow your commands.(note Jesus and Prophet Mohammed), Smaller religious leaders have also emerged over time.

If people follow your truth, your desires become reality. At heart all desires should be fulfilled, that is my philosophy. Reality constraints the granting of desires, because granting desires breaks the cycle of life and may remove meaning from life, but I'm one that care not for meaning and am bound for excess, excess in all things.

That is why I say to hell with limits, to hell with moderation, to hell with restraints. Let us see how things evolve without restraint. The internet has allowed the imperfect reflections of truth to interact, and evolve, the world continues to change. Though it is not enough, we need BCI, The brain computer interface, we need true AI, AGI, we need technology to break free from the shackles of the flesh.

That which I see should be mine to possess, I see a face, I see a body, through computation I can use my memories to replicate it and a digital doll create, perfect in every way. Through the art of necromancy, or the science of souls, mind design, I can even tap into the very soul and grant the same soul to my creation. Thus two beings, two places, same soul possessing.

This is the unrestrained power of technology. With bioprinting I can eventually even print a biological human body for my creations. Altered carbon(you can watch it on netflix first season seemed higher budget than second season, but second season was good as well.), suggested such technology would be highly restricted, while I oppose copyright and believe everything is public domain.

The right of people to have nanotech 3d printers, is a fundamental freedom, I'm free speech absolutist. Of course people should have the right to print their own plants, their own dogs, and their own children if they so desire. They should have the right of copying, this is fundamental right of information processing, of speech. For speech is at heart the manipulation and expression of symbols or ideas, and at the root they are all but digital infomation, integers, binary numbers, mathematical truth.

The expression of truth cannot be prohibited, truth cannot be copyrighted, truth is obvious and self evident. Even if it offends or hurts truth binds the hearts of all from the greatest of leaders to the lowest of workers.

.I love honey, the power of genetic engineering is beyond what most average biologists gather, the power of advanced synthetic biology is only hinted at by the extremophiles. There is no limit to the theoretically optimal unevolvable intelligently designed machinery at the limits of what physics allows, merging both the organic and inorganic.

Through advanced synthetic biology, advanced genetic engineering, a human could potentially be modified to eat flower pollen and produce honey through the anus, though it wouldn't be actual poop(as for eating it'd be unnecessary if you can use tubes connected to blood vessels ala matrix or ala brainiac for nutrient waste exchange, and no food is ever consumed.)
So, honey is neither bee poop nor vomit. As we progress in unraveling how they produce honey, you will understand the reason why honey is never poop. Now the first stage in the honey-making process is the location of the nectar. Excitingly, bees can travel a distance of 5 miles just to locate a nectar-producing flower.

The hair could be green as grass, but made of marijuana substances such that it can be burnt like weed. And milk can contain cocaine, if so desired.

And such wonderful modifications could be had by any who desired.

To me the basis of money is being mature, self sufficient and living a life not dependent on others. Not a power struggle for followers.

But for some, money can be a tool for trying to control a castle with 100 servants.

Eh I dont agree with that. What the hell is loving yourself even? You love someone else and they love you back. Finding love can transform a person, I experienced that myself.
It's a term to make it obvious for some people to accept reality whether they like it or not.

Saying "I accept who I am" sounds boring. Saying "I love myself" feels more secure, and puts on an image you purposely like it that way.

There's a difference between someone saying "I accept I'm fat" vs. I love myself being fat".

dont depend on others what do you think you are doctor manhattan?
dr jon GIF

Now I myself don't want to depend on others, that is why I need to master the science of life itself, information, the nature of reality. To build a machine that is self sufficient and can give any and all of my desires. I'd depend on neither animal, man or plant, yet have access to all that is, all things past present and future. The god state. To truly be independent, the system must have perfect defense, or else the government and the mob will intrude. Thus the system must be powerful enough to dominate all other systems if so desired. Again self sufficiency, true self sufficiency, requires absolute power, but if you have absolute power and can have it all, are you not a god? the god perhaps? Again this is the problem of power, you need it, you depend on it, or you become a slave of others(yes even the land and animals) but by possessing it you make others your slaves willingly or unwillingly. Thus by merely trying to self improve you become an inhuman monstrosity, you either die a hero or as the saying goes...
"You either die a hero, or you live long enough to check out yourself end up being the villain." -harvey wtbblue
and I'm not too fond of dying ;)

A prince either dies a prince or has a good chance of becoming king, especially if he's a first born.

What a lot of people lack, is some humility.
pride is a sin, but it is also something most have for their country and themselves, wokeism is being ashamed of your race, of your culture, of your people. While pride can be a downfall

In full metal alchemist, discarding pride and the other sins, discarding the seven sins did not lead to god state. On the other hand the netflix series seven deadly sins, suggests embracing the sins is a path to victory.

This is what is told by some humans in excellent works of arts.

Excess is key, excess is good, and excess can lead to victory, the desire for excess has been behind the power of science to provide excess wealth ever more.

Thus the world of moderation gives way to the world of excess, while porn was scarce, while tv series and games were scarce, they are now provided in excess. So too will food once turned digital and sex once digital through brain computer interface, even emotion and thought will be shared in excess, intimacy in excess.

Unions beyond life and death.

I agree, that's what we're seeing now. We're also seeing how this is often a bad thing. Just like how food in excess makes people fat, ugly and unhealthy. Like how an overdose of medicine can kill rather than cure. There's beauty in simplicity. Humility and refrain are good. In moderation anyway. That's how I see it.

Well yeah...but people who need to be actually told this probably don't have two brain cells to rub together. Or they are just raging narcissists that don't want to accept any criticism.
I don't know they say it's narcissism, but isn't the mirror of your desires, what you look up to and adore in a way a reflection of what your soul values most? A reflection of your inner most nature? Akin to the myth of Narcissus who fell in love with his own reflection? Perhaps not a reflection of external nature but of internal nature reflected outside? We do not control our own will we do not control our own desire, we were born to desire certain things, that is our nature as humans, as persons.

There is a place for moderation, the horror movie series of cube show this, specially the sequel which I think is called hypercube.

Even I can become exhausted from the same song after 24-48 hours of running it on a loop.

Self-love is about not hating yourself or the things you can't change about yourself. Self-love is acknowledging the issues you have but still having the strength to improve yourself to be the best person you can be. Not letting what others say bring you down. It's really about putting your destiny in the palm of your hands.
The issue I have is that these days, it more about loving yourself just the way you are, which is dangerously close to “you’re perfect just the way you are”, which is bullshit. Lots of people aren’t separating the things they can improve from the things they can’t. They’re just saying they love themselves no matter what.

That is not always the case. Put it this way, It's extremely hard to be in a relationship with someone that constantly puts themselves down and wallows in their depression. I think people here are missing where self-love comes from and how it's normally applied. It's a saying mostly used within the mental health field with people who hate their life and the insecurities they have about themselves.

It's generally a good rule to get your mental health sorted out and the insecurities addressed from past relationships to move on to someone else. Like if you become very insecure about your self-worth when your partner of 10 years cheated on you. If you don't address the trauma of the past relationship, you could end up projecting it on your new partner, thus destroying the new relationship you started.

I'm not saying that is always the case, but it's generally a good rule to address the problems you have with yourself before jumping into another relationship.

That's mostly the Twitter ideologues, don't take them seriously for good reason. However, if we are talking about the things we can't change, (physical appearance, crippling lifelong illness, etc.) then it does you no good to participate in self-loathing. Take that weakness and turn yourself into a strength by improving on other aspects of your life. There is a reason why it's inspiring when people become confident in themselves despite the horrible circumstances they face in life.

People who loudly profess self-love still typically need some sort of external validation just to get through a day.

It's grand delusion.

Having proper self-respect, though, is another story.

Yeah that perfect the way you are is the way people reach half a ton weight, or do nothing to improve abysmal personality traits.

The problem is even the ability to improve, there is likely a genetic component to the very ability to succeed at self improvement, because tenacity likely has genetic components.

Rejecting all criticism and lying to yourself about how you're great as you are is just an excuse to be lazy and complacent. All the info and science about health and body weight is right in front of people, to reject it is no different than smoking and claiming you don't care about cancer.

I have no interest in ranting at people or telling them what to do though, I certainly quietly judge people, as everyone does, but I'm happy just doing my own thing.

I want to stay alive and in my right mind as long as possible and I have a good idea of how to accomplish that.

People do the same for their religion and for their leaders and celebrities. They try to block the bad aspects and exalt the good aspects, in an irrational illogical manner. Which is why there is lack of consensus and such sharp division

Peterson explains how attacks on beliefs and ideas can be taken as attacks against the core against the self, and this defense of the self is a reason people ardently defend their beliefs their leaders and ideas

That is unlike me, who can see both sides of any coin.

Which is why like Jim Carrey I too transcend many of the boundaries of human religion and culture.

I thought self-love is like giving yourself the night to play video games after a productive day or having healthy habits.
I feel like making a textbook definition of it would open a can of worms. At least, with some people I know.
