[The Rare Canceled Game Art Thread]

Don't think those are avatars, tbh.

This was another Rare project:

Now it's your turn to learn what this is, Amir :D
I bet:
Kameo Begins - Prototype #45364

By your [Micrsooft] request we've decided to overhaul the game(yet again). In this pitch Kameo is a young girl living in a modern day era. Gameplay involves dancing, hanging out, going to school and playing with dogs in various Kinect minigames.

p.s. if this doesn't get greenlit we'll go bonkers and fling shit at the wall of Kudo's office when we visit you next year.

Haha, not quiet!

@IOnEI_Falcon There's a half finished zombie version of her as well, if that gives you a clue.

So the bunny and the girl were in the same game...

i loved rare back in the days. a couple of month ago i tried to replay all of their games and i have to say they didn't age good. the first dkc (and maybe the second one as well) is probably the only game i would still consider good.

You wouldn't happen to have a high res version of the original artwork?

Could these also be from the same game?

Thats so sad, such an amazing fall from grace. It would be really nice if Nintendo brought them back from MS.

Unless all of the key folks come flocking back, it'd be worthless at this point. Just buy Banjo from MS for a mere fraction and you're gold IMO.

Since this is the catch all Rare thread, in the latest newsletter they pretty much confirm that they will stop doing newsletters every month.

I guess there's no news.

And they would make them make their games in Japanese so they can get away with not publishing them in US.

And even if DKC is the only Rare game I've played, this thread is sad. So many good things in the industry went to the abyss since 2000

:(

Really, you never played Goldeneye 007? Crazy!

I can't fathom playing fps using pads, it makes me feel really bad.

anyway, I never owned the console. My gaming platforms were:
Atari 2600->pc->pc+genesis->pc->pc+ps2->wii->wii+ds->?

However, I've played the 007 Golden Eye on wii almost half-way through, but it seems i should stay clear of comparing it with the original from what I have understood. I don't like regenerating health.

I'm with ya there. Mouse, Wiimote/Move, or nothing at all. Pads suck ass for FPS.

You can turn regenerating health off through the difficulty level. (it makes it very tough, though!)

And yes, Goldeneye Wii is not comparable to the innovative(but poorly aged nowadays) Goldeneye N64, its single player campaign is one of the better campaigns across all platforms. Much better than your CoDs etc. Eurocom did a great job for the most part.

And with that statement it's sad to see what Rare's turned into. I wonder if "better days" can even possibly be ahead, what with the general decline of the UK's game industry this gen.

I doubt it. The latest mini-scribes had a very "Yes, we're still not making anything other than Kinect sports. Best leave now." tone.

Throwing rocks at those stupid enough to still believe. ;-;

The only way I can see it changing is if something major happens to microsoft, which isn't going to happen.

So Chris Tilston still works at Rare yeah? But he wasn't credited in KS as far as I can look up. I wonder what he is up to. Being the Lead Designer, Gameplay programmer and Project Lead at Rare is pretty big!

people still have hopes for rare? seriously? if this thread has taught us anything its that rare will never go back to their roots and whatever they're currently working on is surely not anything that any of us will want to play so lets just forget about rare and move onto something else

That's pretty big yes, that's why he's gone.

Since Rare adds the rather convenient 'Rare family' to their credits you can assume that everyone not in the credits of Kinect Sports is no longer working at Rare. Except for a few guys doing contract and freelance work.

He's not at Rare anymore, he left during the 2009 reshuffle. Some guys just don't bother to update their LinkedIn profiles ;)
You should be looking forward to what he's doing ;)

New executive producer seeked at Rare: http://jobs.next-gen.biz/job/397/executive-producer/

You’ll focus on Kinect Sports, our massively successful franchise which has redefined motion-controlled gaming.

Yay, more Kinect Sports coming.

Rare, develop and publish games exclusively for Xbox 360, Games for Windows and Windows 7 Phones.

?

• Building and leading a world-class production team

That's actually needed. The prior executive producer's task was "destroying a world-class production team".

Brendan McNamara would be a great fit for that position.

I've got the crazy feeling that Nintendo's somehow related, because why else would anyone be looking forward to what an ex-Rare person is doing really? :P I'm probably totally wrong though.

I think some of the ex-Rare leads had enough of huge productions and huge teams...after PDZ and years without any release (I'm looking at the Conker and PD teams) they chose the 2D Boy way.

Some push for iPad apps (Nyamyam), whereas others work on stuff for other downloadable platforms.

I don't think Nintendo is involved in the Tilston production though, whatever and with whomever he might be working now.

Hmm, bummer. BTW, any idea of any Rare staff in particular is with Nintendo anywhere? All I can recall... was a Keyboard Tapper from Banjo being at Retro during DKCR.

You certainly wouldn't want to go from Rare to one of the two NoA studios...especially if you want to have some creative freedom.

It's not about them going back to their roots, that's not happening any time soon. It's just that I believe that there's good stuff on the horizon that isn't Kinect Sports-related. They had three separate teams at one stage. While that set-up may have been halted during the re-shuffle I still think it would be foolish to assume that all the staff at Rare are only working on KS; there's bound to be other ideas being worked on and more games in the pipeline and it is this that I want to focus on and be positive about rather than declaring Rare to be dead. Another game was supposed to be shown at E3 but obviously at the last minute someone decided that they were still in a 'not ready to be shown' stage.

Please don't confuse me for a completely blinded fanboy though; I've always thought that making Rare do Kinect-only stuff is a complete waste. They'd be much better off being able to develop games that used a controller with Kinect supplementing that experience; it opens up so many more opportunities. Just think of a new Viva Pinata in this style, it would be amazing!

http://www.unseen64.net/2011/07/11/savannah-xbox-360-prototype/

Savannah was one of various prototypes in development at Rare Ltd. during 2006/2007. As the project remained in prototype stage and was not greenlit, only few elements were set in stone, but it could have been some sort of nature simulator, more than a realistic Viva Pinata. Sadly we don’t know exactly for which kind of gameplay these models could have been planned to, and sadly we’ll probably never know, as the project was lost forever in one of many Rare’s internal restructures. Only few images and animations remains to preserve the existence of this project.

Poor Rare, if Nintendo fought for it back then, we probably had a good follow up to Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini and probably some Killer Instict follow up....

No, you shall not forget about the 2006-2008 years. We would've got twenty DK games, many casual titles, and see as many people leave (How do I come to that conclusion? Take a look at NST and Retro). Big publishers like to destroy game studios, that's their goal ;)

Yeah, no I don't think the destruction would be as prolific as it has been.

Little new thing for you guys :) Ben Talbot now works for Ubisoft. I believe he might now be becoming their new Online Marketing Manager!

What's hilarious to me is that Microsoft has access to all of these IPs and they haven't done squat with them. They gutted the company, refuse to use the IPs, and have talent working on avatars and Kinect games. I think it ranks as one of the worst acquisitions in gaming history and for all parties involved.

Gemini I remember having quite a bit of collecting, yet if memory serves me right BK gave you quite a bit of leeway with how much you had to collect. Something like, 80 jiggies and 800 notes out of 10 worlds? That's not too bad, especially since SM64 had a similar amount of stuff you had to of collected before completing the game.

So no, I'd say DK64 was where collecting stuff in Rare games went from feeling natural (or at least didn't take away from the rest of the gameplay) and went to pretty much being the sole focus, along with SFA.
SM64 only required you to collect a little over half the stars available in the game and the only things you had to worry about collecting were stars, coins and red coins. Banjo Kazooie required you to collect closer to 75% of the collectables(Notes and Jiggies). Not even getting into collecting Mumbo tokens, Eggs, feathers, golden feathers, etc.

With that said it was tolerable in Banjo Kazooie, it was a tad bit excess but easily forgiveable in Banjo Kazooie. Rare took it to the max in latter games though.

Yeah...Battletoads, Blast Corps, Perfect Dark, Conker, Killer Instinct, Kameo, Viva Pinata, It's Mr. Pants and Banjo...even Grabbed by the Ghoulies!

A sensible request from a fan

Q: Dear Rare,
Since for reasons unspecified you refuse to make the action/adventure games your fans have been demanding for over a decade could you at least put some of the beloved characters from those games in your sports games. I think it would take away a little of the sting if I could at least play as Banjo and Kazooie or Conker in one of your sports games.
Sincerely,
Jimmy
A: Reasons unspecified: we can’t possibly create every sequel and remake and XBLA port that people bawl at us to make on a daily basis, and when it comes down to it, Kinect Sports has proven more popular than anything else we’ve done in recent years. So while we never rule out returning to action-adventure or any other genre, we also have to a) be able to afford junkfood and alcopops and b) satisfy an active audience of more than three million people who now know Rare best for Kinect Sports.

Many ideas were (and continue to be) tossed around for Sports mascots; the inevitable consensus was that the audience for this franchise is different enough to find a load of old-school Rare references bewildering rather than encouraging. Especially if one of them was Mr. Pants, which I would make damn sure it was.
Those franchises won't get guest roles even, Banjo was good enough for the Sonic Racing game but not for Sports.

Like most Nintendo fans in the UK, I always wanted to work at rares glorious studio!

Sad times.

Fuck you Microsoft, stick your Kinect up your ass!

How much did PDZ sell? Just as much as Sports I think! N64 Rare games sold just as much.

Such a cheap excuse.

"Our 3 million casual fans who have never heard of us mean more than the 10 million fans we probably have for our decent games"

Weak and pathetic.

Fuck you Rare.

Loved Rare. Nostalgic thinking of all the fun I had back in the day, up to the gamecube era. I really did like Starfox Adventures. It was a beautiful game.

Hell, I kinda even sorta liked Perfect Dark Zero.

No. PDZ was their best selling Xbox title before Sports, at 1.5 million. Kinect Sports is already at over 3 million and still selling.
