I think that that was only speculation, because only the PS2 version was 100% complete when Acclaim went under. Didn't sound like it would take much work to fix the remaining bugs, but I guess a publisher still might not want to do that.

BTW, drohne -- is it just me, or have you not posted at all in a while?

Xbox version was finished too. Just not FINISHED finished.

The PS2 version came back from certification. It LITERALLY was completely, 100% done & certified. Xbox version was sent to be certified, and came back with some things to be fixed, but it was literally like under a week's worth of work.

awesome news. i love what i've played of the game (wink wink) and will glady pick up whatever console version gets released.

by the way, what team is responsible for this one? i'd like to comit them to memory as a team that makes good games :)

Before Acclaim folded, they sent us a mostly complete preview build of the game, and I honestly don't see why people are so rabid over its release. It's a pretty cool little shooter, but it's not as though it's mind-shatteringly awesome. Does the comic just have a larger fanbase than I originally believed or what?

hmm, i'm not a hardcore shooter fan, nor someone stuck on retro gaming.

but red star nailed that "old school" feeling, with absolutely terrific gameplay. its just loads of fun to play, and doesnt seem to grow old.

It was the Acclaim Austin studio (formerly Iguana). They also made all the Turok games as well as Vexx. The Red Star was looking quite good. I played it briefly on an Xbox demo kiosk but not long enough to form an opinion of it. I'm glad it's finally getting released.

I saw someone playing the demo at Best Buy months back. I only saw about half a minute of playthrough but it did sorta seems to play like Contra but with some melee action thrown into the mix. That in itself is reason enough to have hope for the game I suppose.

edit:Ben T beat me to it:)

Xbox Nation received a review build for The Red Star about a year ago. Young Mr. Fennec Fox wrote the review for the game and, as I recall, it scored an eight out of a possible 10.

It's fucking awesome. I've played through it with two of the three playable characters and would gladly pay $30 for a legit copy.

Based on the rantings on the Internet, you would think that this would be a hotly anticipated title that is unjustly being held back from the public. Sadly, the first NPD numbers after its release will show otherwise. I say Psychonatus/Killer 7 type numbers (if that)

Internet = Vocal minority.

Does that rule apply if the game was never released? I'd love to check it out, but I'm unable to play "backup" games on my Xbox :p.

I know we have some of the game's devs here at GAF, and it's sad to see what happened with the game. Everything I played was awesome.

You rang? This is news to me somewhat, although Gossett, from what I gather, was hinting that a deal was about to be done shortly some months back. That said, I've just grown accustomed to that line from various people so I didn't take much stock in it; if true, fantastic. I'd love to own a copy of the one and only game I had a hand in.

As to clarify for the team that made it, it's not really any one team; it was a mix of people from the last Turok, Vexx, and some other Acclaim titles, as people shifted between teams during new projects. Where those people went is hard to say for sure; I'm only familiar with the design team in particular, since I was part of it. Some of us, myself included, have left the industry, while others have picked up gigs at various studios around the country; as far as I'm aware, no two designers actually work at the same studio, and a lot of the people that worked on The Red Star are so scattered that you'll unlikely see us work together again.

I'm not sure how big the comic fanbase is, but a lot of the reason that the game got attention from the gaming press had more to do with its old school mechanics and throwback nature of the game. That and the unfortunate timing of Acclaim's demise left the game in a perpetual teaser state; the public go to play it in pieces at E3 and on the OXM demo, while some of the press got to play the entire thing. Frankly, I'm just glad people like the game, and I'll be ecstatic if the game actually comes out.
