For those who have never heard of it, never owned a DVD player or been to a movie theatre -- the modern classic, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, is being presented on FOX for Thanksgiving. I think we can all give thanks to that, especially now that the greatest film of all-time is within our reach...

You misspelled "Training Day". An easy mistake to make, the letters are all so close to each other on the keyboard... :D

Patrick : Hey, Paul....

*Paul looks up and sees Patrick holding an ax already in mid swing*

Paul : Ahhhhhhh

*Huey Lewis continues playing in the background*

In closing, Batman will rock harder than BOTH of these bug boy movies. Which in turn will set up BATMAN vs. VEMON, the movie in which Batman kills Brock and takes the symbiote for himself.

Spider-man wasn't even the best movie that opened that week, and I don't even know what else opened.
Yeah, I'd say Woody Allen's disappointing Hollywood Ending was probably the better film.

Can someone link me to that GAF recommendations that suck thread? :p I'm just messing of course though. But I'll be honest and say I'm definitely no Spidey fan, much less any other superhero.

This is kinda ironic, my cousin and I were just talking earlier about how the Spider-Man movies are really over-rated. He loves comic book movies and I hate them, but we both agree that while the Spider-Man movies were good, they didn't deserve nearly as much praise as they got. What exactly about these movies do you like, Willco?

Dead

well not really...yet
They seriously get worse with each repeat viewing. I saw 2 twice, and the second time I just couldnt stand any scene that didnt feature Alfred Molina. The first one is completely unwatchable to me now.

Everything.

*sigh* ♥ ♥ ♥ *sigh*

... The first one is flawed, but an insane amount of fun and was a wild ride in theatres. I love Willem Dafoe in it, even through the costume everyone hates, and nothing will ever replace the initial thrill of seeing Spider-Man really webslinging in New York City.

The second one is brilliant and about as close as you can get to seeing an issue of Amazing Spider-Man in motion. Complete with all those Sam Raimi sensibilities we know and love. There's not a thing I'd change.

I'm sad that we'll end at just three.

It's funny...the way a lot of people find the Spidey movies overrated, I find the Burton Batman movies overrated. They're just boring and medicore beyond belief, but they get oooh's and aaah's because everything is dark...yah. I'd rather watch Condorman.

For such blasphemy, I sentence you to 86 lashes. Batman was great, Batman Returns, however, did suck balls. Jack Nicholson and Keaten did a great job in the first IMO, and Kim Basinger was hot as hell as Vicky Vale. That said, Batman ain't near one of my favorite movies.

The greatest film of all-time is.............................Pulp Fiction. Good cast, good story. OK, we can lock this thread now. PEACE.

Are you kidding me? Alfred Molina had some of the worst scenes in that movie. Not through his own fault, but until his wife died, all his scenes ended in me grabbing for a sick bag. It's like they said, 'okay we don't think the audience will get how the death of his wife will send him over the edge, so we've got to do some subtle as a sledgehammer lovey-dovey crap first'.

Seriously the films have some of the worst attempts at character development and moral complexity ever. The only reason people are fooled into thinking that it's worth shit is 'cause they go in with low expectations for a comicbook movie having any semblance of characters, which frankly I think I may even prefer to having to yawn and cringe through anything involving Peter, Uncle Ben (who was dead! Dead! But they brought him back just to piss me off), Aunt May, MJ and Doc Ock and his wife.

Dead

well not really...yet
Well I kinda meant any scene he was in when he was Dock Ock, guess I shouldve worded that better.

Yeah obviously. But there wasn't enough of him 'cause they had to cram the film with Peter soul-searching to find his inner-hero (which was just rehashing of the same crappy stuff that bogged down the first film) and MJ being a self-centred, attention whore, bitchy slut.

Spider-Man sucked! The CG is horrible! And did anyone else question why a Spider-man's identity was not revealed after he showcased his skills maskless in a highschool and also signed up maskless for that dumb wrestling match. STOOOPID

Ugh I hate that whole school thing in the first one. It makes no sense that no-one would remember that.

But it pales in comparison to quasi-Messainic train scene in the second one. That plumbed new depths of utter suckitude. Like they would really all form some spontaneous pact to protect the identity of Spiderman. And I curse the dumbing down for a lower certificate stopping the scene ending how it should have done, with Doc Ock massacering every person in that carriage who got in his way. We didn't even get one short, fat, balding middleage white guy getting pushed out the window and plummeting to his death.

That whole scene was supposed to be making fun of the utterly dreadful bridge scene in part 1, but in the end its just as bad if not worse. Worthless.

I don't think anything could have been as bad as the bridge scene. That must rate as one of cinema's lowest points.

Seriously. Between that train scene and the "Everybody knows nuclear fusion can't stand water!" ending, Spider-Man 2 was just dumb as hell. Still pretty fun but forehead-slappingly stupid.

Of all the people to deeply deeply admire, Sam Raimi?? Was The Evil Dead that big a part of your childhood or something?

Spiderman 1 and 2 aren't even the best Raimi movies, let alone all around best. I'd rather watch Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, Darkman, Simple Plan...hell you could even throw the Quick and the Dead in there..a movie I always thought was underrated.

the Quick and the Dead in there..

That movie is infinitely better than both Spidermans. At least it knew it was corny and ran with it, instead of trying to interject Evil Dead-goofiness into somewhat serious subject matter (sans the superhero stuff) and pretending it's all natural.

Hate to break it to you man...but you're wrong. Batman was a boring illogical piece of shit, with shit fights, zero dedective work, and just some idiotic scenes (Batman blowing up an entire warehouse full of guys just to get Joker, then shooting at Joker in a street full of civilians and missing...oh yeah, can't forget Vicky waltzing into the Batcave like it was some fucking strip mall). Keaton did nothing for me as Wayne or Batman, Vicky Vale was absolutely useless, and Nicholson's Joker bows at the feet of Mark Hamill's. Batman Returns isn't even worth talking about.

Mask of the Phantasm is the best comic-based movie by miles (only Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker comes close), and that's just the way it is. Though hopefully that'll change in May.

With that all said, I did like the two Spidey flicks, even with all their flaws. I'm not sure I've ever been more annoyed by a scene in a movie I like then the nonsense on that subway train though. Seriously, this whole nicing up of New Yorkers in the post 9/11 world needs to fucking stop. New Yorkers are (with few exceptions) assholes. Cunt licks. Dick strokes. Let's just accept that reality instead of trying to make 'em out to be Nova Scotia South.

Quick and the Dead ruled BTW...really fun flick.

As for the best movie I've ever seen, it really varies...Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark tend to flip back and fourth, but Seven, Training Day, Mask of the Phantasm and Glengarry Glen Ross all rank up there as well.

The Quick and The Dead does rule. All Sam Raimi movies rule. Except the one that we shall not speak of, for it was not a Sam Raimi movie due to internal sabotage.

That said, only two movies have Sam Raimi and Spider-Man, who is tied for the greatest comic book character of all-time, so Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 are the greatest films of all-time.

Ed Wood is on? Throne of Blood? The Royal tenebaums?

personally, I prefer Batman Returns to Batman. The first one had a good amount of detective work and chemistry though. It was enough to thrill the hell out of a twelve year old, thats for sure.

Which detective work was this? You mean when he paused the screen and suddenly remembered that Joker/Jack Napier was the same guy who put his parents on ice? That's about the only thing I can think of.

Well he figured out the formula to the Jokers poison and made an antidote. Plus he always seemed to have a contingency plan. The movie did play up the action and psychology more than detective work, but certain issues of the comic have been the same.
