The Sega 32X appreciation Topic!

When I finally bought a 32X I was more than underwhelmed. To me for the most part, all it did was match the SNES.

Sound was still far superior on the SNES, and outside of say VF and VR the graphics weren't any better.

I have Doom for 32X, SNES, Jaguar, 3DO, N64, PSX, Saturn, and GBA. I think that's it, until Xbox DOOM III special edition comes out.

You have the Saturn Doom what is it like? Is it like the 32x Doom? I enjoyed the 32x doom a lot when I had the system. I have always wanted to play the Saturn doom,
I will also be getting the Xbox DOOM III special edition when it comes out.

Can someone do a comparison of the Saturn Doom and 32x Doom.

All I know is the Saturn Doom was based off of the PS1 program of Doom it had the lighting but I heard it ran slow. But you could adjust the window size to make it run faster.

I wanted to appologize to you, for my reply(ies) to you, yesterday. looking back, I feel that I was really rude. I'm sorry :(

I still feel the same way about the conversions/ports to the 32X, but I could've been alot more polite about it.

That's OK. I didn't think you came across as rude at all. You just felt stronly about your opinion. Though, you're probably right as I haven't played the arcade version of Afterburner is quite some time.

hmmm, Instead of the 32X, Sega should've made the SEGA-CD a better upgrade

I feel that the 32X should never have come out, at least in the way that it did. I think Sega should've put any upgrades into the Sega CD. while Sega *did* put more processing power into the SegaCD with the additional MC68000, audio chip and the ASIC that provided scaling & rotation, Sega, unbelievably did not bolster the Genesis' sprite handling or color capabilities.

for the love of God why not? because of this, the SegaCD with all of its extra processor power, couldn't really rival the NeoGeo in sprite pushing power, or the color capabilities of the SNES, or even the color capabilities of the much older PC Engine/TurboGrafx.

In my, much more ideal alternate Sega universe, Sega would not have released the 32X which never really got used very well. instead, Sega puts EVERYTHING into the SegaCD. extra sprite handling and color capabilities. now obviously since SegaCD comes out in 1991, Sega cannot put the same type of hardware into it that the 32X got in 1994, however, since Sega is putting more into the SegaCD than the SegaCD really got, and since it is going to be used MUCH more and much better than the 32X capabilities were used, it wont matter that my fantasy SegaCD is not as powerful as the real 32X. It ends up being enough with proper software development from 1991 until 1994-95 when the Saturn arrives, and even after the Saturn comes out, SegaCD is still supported until 1999 when the Dreamcast comes out.

SegaCD gets the enough sprite & color handling capabilities so that it is able to handle any Sega arcade came, through the System24 line. thats about 2000 sprites. the base Saturn then gets to handle all System32 (sprite) and Model 1 (flat shaded polygon) games, and the Saturn upgrade allows the Saturn to handle upgraded Model 2 (texture mapped polygons) ports, and downscaled but decent Model 3 conversions, and then the Dreamcast handles upgraded Model 3 ports.

oh yeah, almost forgot, my SegaCD also gets a double speed CD-ROM drive, so that games load reasonably fast. this SegaCD is able to take on 32-Bit systems like the FM Towns Marty, Commodore CD32, 3DO, as far as viability, marketshare, software support, even though some of the early 32bit systems are somewhat more powerful.

this way, Sega keeps its 16-bit and 32-bit lines complete seperate.

Master System | Genesis, SegaCD | Saturn, Saturn2 upgrade cart | Dreamcast

HELP!!!!!

I lost the cable to hook the 32x to my first gen genesis. I cant find one on ebay. Does anyone know how to hook it up without it, or if you need that stupid little cable to use the 32x on the second or third gen models.

thanks for the help

I couldnt even tell you how many hours I logged into Doom for the 32X. I played it all day, every day. I remember playing one part in particular on the hardest difficulty w/ god mode would crash the game (i think there were too many enemies on screen).

Man that game was awesome.

Ew, that could be a toughie. The cheapest thing for you to do would be to buy a Model 2 Genesis(You do have that cord, right?). You can buy a Sega Genesis for under 10 bucks on Ebay.

I think the Sega CD and the 32X both were mistakes. The Sega CD was really a response to the PC Engine's CD add-on in Japan, which was killing Sega's Megadrive in sales. However, the Turbo Grafx 16 didn't really take off in the US, so releasing the CD add-on over here was pretty much point-less. A 300 dollar add on for a $150 console? It's surprising the Sega CD was as successful as it was. I think Sega got over-confident in their own brand name and figured they were infallible. I think Nintendo could call into this same trap if they're not careful - what with all these handhelds coming out so quickly. Difference here, of course, is that Nintendo is a time-tested brand, while, at the time, Sega was pretty new to most people.

Buuuuut, on the other hand, if they never released the Mega CD, we wouldn't have gotten Lunar 1&2, Vay, Sonic CD, Snatcher, Keio, Robo Aleste, etc. :)

i have one of all the genesis's i never tried to hook the 32x up to any of them but the first one because its the original one i got. So with the second gen, you dont need the cable i lost.

I've got fond memories of the Sega CD myself. Other games that were pretty good-Silpheed,Flink,SoulStar,Batman Returns,PitFall the Meyan Adventures(fun game enhanced by much superior character animation, its CD audio soundtrack was really awesome.) I wish I had it to listen to nowdays.

Oh, yeah, the Sega CD has more quality titles than some people give it credit for. Other good ones we haven't mentioned yet:

Shining Force CD
Eternal Champions(I'll admit the Genesis version wasn't the best, but the Sega CD version was AWESOME.)
Night Trap
The Secret of Monkey Island
Heart of the Alien
Fatal Fury Special(Eh. It was decent)
Samurai Showdown(Eh. It was decent)
Wonderdog
Spider-Man VS the Kingpin(GREAT soundtrack)
Earthworm Jim: Special Edition(Groovy!!)
Terminator 2
Time Gal(choppy version of the arcade classic)
Space Ace(choppy version of the arcade classic)
Dragon's Lair(choppy vers...ah, you get the idea. Sega went overboard on the FMV, eh?)
Mickey Mania
Prince of Persia(Yes, another PoP port)
Sol-Deace(Same as Sol-Feace...but with cut-scenes!)
Lords of Thunder
Wolfchild
Final Fight CD
Popful Mail
Ecco the Dolphin CD(Sure, its the same as the Genesis game with better sound, but the sound is great!)

DOOM for Saturn is nothing like the 32X version. It's based on the PSX version and is almost exactly the same except for weak graphics. The transparent effects look terrible and you have to play in a tiny window to get it to run smoothly.

If you mean the video cable that connects between the 32X's video out and the Genny's video in, you need it for Genesis 2 as well. Get another 32X?

That little cable and the extra power supplies 32X and SegaCD require are really annoying.

One quirk of the 32X Virtua Racing: there's a huge open area hidden in one of the courses that to my knowledge wasn't in any other version. My friends and I used to do "demolition derbies" there. For the life of me I can't imagine why.

Interesting.... I wonder if any pics are available (yes I know that sounds stupid to some, but whatever).
