The Steam Backlog A-Z Thread

The idea for this thread started in another thread Here. For many of us who purchased far too many Steam games during the Steam Holiday sale and other sales, it is difficult to decide which game to play next. To solve this we are just going to play them alphabetically.

I have over 100 games in my backlog, many left over from 2009's Holiday sale. Since many were part of publisher packs I would likely never get to them unless I follow this system.

FAQ

Q. What is this thread?
A. A place to track your progress through your Steam backlog. Preferably alphabetically.

Q. What if a sequel to a game comes first alphabetically?
A. Don't be a moron, play the series in order.

Q. What about my console backlog?
A. This is a Steam backlog thread.

Q. How should I track my progress?
A. Make a post with your backlog list, as you complete games, make a new post about the game you finished. Preferably with screenshots and a short review. Then you can edit your list and strike out the titles. You can also add links to the posts you make after you finish a game next to the game title.

Q. What about Multiplayer games, City/Nation building games, and Puzzle games?
A. If the game does not have a traditional single player campaign it is hard to know when you "finished" the game. In these cases just play the game until you are satisfied you have experienced what is has to offer.

Q. What if the game just sucks really bad?
A. You can try to force yourself through it. But if you gave it an honest try and you are not enjoying yourself, just quit early and give your reasons. If you purchased publisher packs, you probably have a few games you are not interested in. Give them a try, you may be surprised.

Q. What about a games in progress?
A. That is up to you, you can wait until you hit that game in the list. Or you can just finish it now, or play multiple games concurrently. Also you can bold these titles to set them apart.

I have bolded the games I currently have installed and am attempting to complete. Hopefully I can finish a couple of them before the end of the month.

I'm only posting the games I'm currently targeting for completion. Posting my full list makes zero sense, as I'm 145 games deep, and have no intention to attempt beating all of them.

Thus:

Alpha Protocol
Batman: AA
Crysis
Crysis: Warhead
Dead Space
Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age: Awakening
Fallout 3
Front Mission Evolved
The Last Remnant
Recettear
Risen
The Witcher: EE

The bolded = I'm at least halfway through them.

I recently finished DA:O, and it felt good to complete something. I tried to start Awakenings immediately, but I was totally burnt out on Dragon Age.

My next targets are Dead Space -> Alpha Protocol -> Awakenings.

Currently have 2 chapters left in Dead Space, and am at least 50% of the way through A.P.

After that, I'll change the pace with a WRPG like The Witcher or Risen.

My goal in 2011 is to buy no more than 5 retail games, as I take chunks out of my Steam backlog.

Well good luck to you, but I think that you´re doing it wrong if you actually try to complete each game you buy on Steam.

I myself have games like Company of Heroes and Arma2 which I have bought for skirmish games, not for the campaigns. I also have games like Deus Ex and Thief: Deadly Shadows categorized as "Why not", which are games I have bought because of the price and their status, not because I actually have an interest right now to play them until the end credits roll.

I wouldn´t exactly let games like those keep me from playing more interesting games.

Well I just finished Call of Duty: Black Ops, which was a game I already had in progress so I just decided to finish it out of order.

Not a bad game, but certainly not as good as Modern Warfare 2. It suffers from the same issues as the other Call of Duty games, too many scripted sequences and shooting galleries.

There is a mission where you infiltrate an island, and you must use stealth to avoid detection. Except the mission requires no thinking at all, you just follow an NPC and knife kill the guys it marks for you at scripted locations, there is only one path to follow. This could have been a great mission where you make your own way through the island and use stealth and your own decision making skills to proceed.

You feel like they are holding your hand too often, like in the helicopter sequences you can't control vertical motion, so you just blindly go forward it it automatically raises and lowers you where appropriate, this ruins immersion and also just feels cheap.

Difficulty in this game just comes from throwing tons of bad guys at you with better aim, there is almost no enjoyment in fighting 20 guys in a room vs 12. The challenge should come from situations where real strategy will prevail instead of just hiding in cover and memorizing where you need to snipe someone.

Anyway, I enjoyed it, but if the Call of Duty series wants to evolve, they are going to have to add some more open and free-form levels. You can keep some cinematic scripted sequences, but give the player some choice.

I forgot to take many shots during this play-through but here are a few screens:

Next up: Alpha Protocol

Lost and the Damned
I loved the alternate perspective on the events of GTAIV but I suppose a lot of it was lost on me since I beat GTAIV two years ago. None of the characters were likeable especially Johnny Klebitz. I'm glad Rockstar rectified that with RDR.

Warhammer Dawn of War 2- Chaos Rising

I just beat this a couple of hours ago in anticipation of Retribution. The singleplayer campaign was much much better than Dawn of War 2. While the plot is paper thin and on its own uninteresting, it harmonizes together with the gameplay mechanics in a way that few games do. Without giving away spoilers, the Corruption/Retribution mechanics which governs the type of weapons you choose and can use/squad abilities/who to bring to the missions, and objective conditions play a huge role in what ultimately happens to your Blood Raven squad.

But ultimately is it better than SCII's campaign? Plotwise they're both very hollow but I personally think that Chaos Rising takes the cake simply because of this interconnection b/t the story and the gameplay. Ultimately, The choices you had to make in CR were far more compelling than the tacked on upgrade grind from SC2.

So I think I am done with Aliens vs Predator. No I did not beat it, but really I am not having fun with this game at all. I think I paid $5 for it on Steam so I don't feel bad really.

I didn't expect the story or characters to be compelling, and they aren't, so no surprise there. The visuals are nice but the gameplay just isn't that interesting. On the Marine missions I hoped for some intense battles in an atmospheric and tense setting. But there was almost no tension most of the time, there are several sections where you are just running from checkpoint A to checkpoint B, then aliens come out at predicable moments such right after you hit a switch somewhere.

The Alien gameplay was a little better, some of the controls are wonky but it didn't take too much getting used to. Sneaking up on guys is fun and the intro for the Alien campaign was actually pretty cool. Uninteresting missions are soon to follow though.

Predators are fun to play, I mean they are bad-asses, but I didn't feel like the levels really took advantage of this. More linear paths. Turok on N64 had more open and convincing jungles.

The MP is fun but not good enough to hold my attention for long. You actually feel tension though b/c human controlled Aliens are more skilled. It does feel pretty balanced and the level design is better than single player.

I'm crossing this game off this list despite not completing the campaign. It has some good points but just does not seem worth the time.

I just finished Alpha Prime.

This is a pretty standard FPS, but I had a lot of fun with it. It plays like an old school FPS, no regenerating health, lots of weapons, no auto-saves, no cover system, oh yeah and it has bullet-time. It was nice playing a game like this, it was challenging and you had to keep an eye on your health going into battles which isn't something you need to think about in modern games. You are rewarded for searching bins and lockers to get more ammo.

The story is pretty bland, some evil mining corporation wants a rare mineral and especially this artifact called the Heart. They kill people on a planet to get at it, you go there to rescue a friend blah blah... Some of the dialogue is pretty bad, but there are some amusing characters such as Paolo Bellini. The story at least makes sense, is simple to follow, and provides the reason as to why you are there.

The enemies are a bit challenging, they all seem to have super vision and the ability to snipe with any weapon from long range. You will take damage fast if you aren't careful. The game starts to drag around level 6-7 because you are sick of corridor shooting galleries. Level 8 opens up with an outdoor level and a drivable vehicle with horrible controls. The game ends with a boss battle, which is a basic do damage then activate switches to kill boss battle.

The graphics look nice, the engine feels smooth and has a Doom 3 vibe to it.

46/69. I think I'll get through them alphabetically once I finish off the ones I've made a lot of progress on. Dead Space is almost done along with Super Meat Boy.

I'm shocked looking at that because I have no console backlog to speak of. Damn you, Steam.

racooon said:
Why is STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl not on the list? Do you have it on CD instead?

I already finished that game :)

This is just my backlog, not my full Steam catalog.

I might actually put a few CD games I have in here such as The Witcher, but mostly this is about getting through my Steam list.

Tbh I'd recommend skipping Clear sky if you don't have fun with it. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as SoC.
My laptop isn't good enough to run Call of Pripyat though, so go nuts with that by all means.

So I know I took a huge break from this thread. First of all after the Skyrim info landed I got back into Oblivion (modded of course) and that threw me off. Then I played Portal 2 and it took a while to get back into the groove. The latest Steam sale added a few games to my backlog as well.

Anyway, I did play a good amount of Alpha Protocol. The game is good, but it wasn't able to hold my interest. I played all of the Middle East and Taipei missions.

The Good:

- Stealth is fun
- RPG elements
- Upgrades affect game play noticeably
- Open mission design
- Buying upgrades

The Bad:

- Story wasn't engaging
- Level/mission design was a little bland
- Could be too easy at times if you set off alarms and just decided to go guns blazing

The setting was cool, a stealth/espionage RPG. You don't get too many of those, that is probably the games biggest selling point. The RPG elements are done well, the open mission structure is cool. You feel like you have control of shaping your character. However, these elements don't mean anything if the game isn't fun. The game is fun, just not that fun. I enjoyed what I played, but it was starting to get dull. I almost felt like my motivation to play a mission was just to improve my stats. The missions themselves should be captivating enough to warrant playing them.

I may finish it at some point, but it is low on the priority list. Maybe if I get bored and have nothing to play. (Doesn't seem likely)

I forgot to take many screenshots, only have one:

I just finished Amnesia: The Dark Descent

I was a fan of the Penumbra series (even though I haven't finished a game in the series) so I was really excited for this one. So this is probably the scariest game I have ever played. The fact that you cannot defeat enemies is a big factor, you are forced to run, hide, or barricade yourself. This makes any time you encounter an enemy a very tense moment.

The game does a wonderful job with atmosphere and environment. The sound plays a huge factor. The puzzles are smart, but not frustratingly hard. There were only a few parts that really stumped me and it was usually because I missed something obvious. The story is pretty good as well and kept me interested. The story adds to the mood and gameplay and reading journal logs is important to solving puzzles.

The game only took me a little over 6 hours, but I'm not sure a scary game could be too compelling if it was too long. My heart can only take so much. I highly recommend this game if you are interested in puzzles/adventure/survival horror.

Didn't remember to take screenshots for most of my play-through, but here are two:

Post Steam sale thread revive!

Hmm I might start this back up. I have to update my backlog list of course, I think I have added another 20 games :(

Just finished VVVVVV though.

Is there any easy way to copy+paste one's Steam game list?

Edit: Beaten.

How do you make your list?
My collection is too big for me to manually type it in...

Well there isn't a really easy way. I went to my Steam Profile page, had it list All Games, then I used Chrome tools to edit the HTML and hide everything except the game titles, then I used a find and replace to remote extra spaces... took a bit but faster than typing in all the games manually.

edit: updated my list..

I didn't realize I have so many games, I'll never finish it all, and then I'll buy more. Lol.

Done with Shatter. I love Breakout, and Arkanoid only improved upon it. Shatter is an awesome Arkanoid clone with beautiful backgrounds and an awesome soundtrack.

Good idea. Cheers. :) I'll post mine later, if I don't forget.
