After a pretty wet June, it's really started get get hot where I am these past couple of days. With the increased heat comes an increased desire for an ice cold smoothie when I get home. I was lucky enough to live in Thailand a while back where you can pretty pick up a glass on any street corner for $1-2. Now, I have to make my own and tend to follow the following rules:
- The ingredients are normally dictated by what's cheap and in season. Right now for me it's peaches, blueberries and watermelon.
- I add a few ice cubes to make it extra cold, and normally blend until they have mostly mixed in with the drink
- I'm stuck with regular milk at the moment, but I think almond milk makes the best mixer. Water is a little too thin, plus you get that from the ice anyway. Soy milk is a little too strong in flavour for a smoothie imo
- I always throw in a banana no matter which other fruits I use, as in my experience it's essential in order to help blend the ingredients into a single smooth texture.
- Vegetables can be good too. A little kale is a good choice, although spinach is more common for me right now. I'm not a fan of carrot.
- A touch of yogurt can give the drink a little added thickness and flavour. Adding ice-cream seemed common when I was in Australia, but that's a little too thick and sweet for my tastes.
- I normally don't mix more than 3 different fruits/veg, as the taste gets a little weird once you add too many
Here's a peach/banana/blueberry one I made this afternoon:
Any recommended combinations, Gaf? How about a coffee shake? Ice tea shake? The summer's just getting started and I'm looking to experiment.
