The Surge |OT| Live Die Repeat

LOL!

Not to disregard their work, since I'm sure they devoted a lot of time to their writing, I never really heard of them. Idk how solid they are in terms of past reviews. They seem to praise the combat quite a bit but complain the game is "corridor after corridor". Reading through the review confuses me as to how they reached that 5/10 score with everything that they wrote.

And that's my review.

The combat is the one really good thing the game does, and apart from that nothing impressed me whatsoever.

It suits a 5/10 in my opinion.

Sounds like that Nier Automata OS system

That was such a cool concept, and I did get a lot of enjoyment out of setting up optimal chip-sets. But Automata never really demanded it as a necessity, you can get through that game super easily with the bare essentials -- I loved Automata by the way, some times I just wish it was a little more serious about its character action-ness. Seeing this system in a more demanding Souls-esque game is super promising, it seems like you're really going to feel the benefits and trade-offs.

Man someone spent 89 hours? Im around 10 or 11 and at the third boss. Am I not even half way? Spoiler the answer if you know.

well there are only 5 bosses, last boss is in the rocket section. there was security boss before that. I think people like to take their time grinding up gear and lvls

Pretty game is pretty.

Love your reviews Karak. I bought this one but I like how straight forward and precise you make the videos.

My thanks man. Appreciate it and glad you get some info from them

probably cuz most people have never heard of this game and immediately dismiss it when they see "from the makers of Lords of the Fallen" heh

Yet we have them for Devs who released one or two good games followed by 2 or 3 crap titles. It just no longer makes sense to be this way.

Watched the IGN review. My worry is the lack of interesting weapons and the time you'll likely spend in menus over loot that may not really impact the gameplay substantially (at least to make up for the effort needed to attain and organize them). These were some of my big problems with Nioh, which I have zero desire to go back and replay.

This is stuff that is kind of inherent to the very nature of these games and really any game with RPG elements and a big loot element. That's even part of the draw.

Later, tired right now and I love Karaks stuff but he talks to fast(I am french Canadian) ;)
The very reason I stopped watching them myself. The wordplay and run on sentences that seem to go for eternity are a bit much for my tasters as well.

No offense to Karak , I wish him the best. Maybe if he had a site with written reviews? I'm game for that.

I feel like theres a fine line between too much time in the Menu dealing with loot and not enough at all.

Nioh was too much loot.

Dark Souls is too little.

I feel like there is some happy medium in between where I don't need to spend 20 minutes going through loot after every mission but without being uninteresting finding the same stuff in the same place every time.

Personally I feel those games are incredibly light on menu time and inventory management and the like, especially compared to a lot of other RPG games. Hell even the Resident Evil games often spend more time in menus lol. I do get where you're coming from but this doesn't seem to bad from the videos I watched.

It's more that- if you're going to add systems to a Souls-type, they have to be substantial in how they alter the core experience (assuming for the better), while not detracting from the (mostly) simplistic, satisfying nature of combat and world discovery the genre progenitor series is lauded for. I love loot games (hundred of hours in Diablo/Torchlight/Borderlands/etc.) but not when they're tacked on like Nioh or even Shadow Warrior 2, usually to the detriment of play.

They manage to walk a fine line of being acceptable by not being multiplayer during the item management portions.

A similar example would be Diablo 3 on Console which not only has a similar reward loop but you also stall every other player while you're messing with your stuff in town.

In Local Coop its even worse since you have to take turns doing it and it actively blocks the other people from being able to play.

Is the footage in your review from the early parts of the game or does the game look that samey throughout the whole campaign?

So far, off to a shit start on PC at least. First, it does the crap TW3 PC implementation where you have to turn off your screen saver before starting the game, or constantly fidget with the controls so that it doesn't kick in. If it does appear, you're forever stuck with a mouse pointer on the screen (moving it off the screen doesn't do anything). I also had a hard freeze right after I had access to move my character within the first 60 seconds of the game...

The difference is that the primary gameplay focus of Nioh and Souls is the combat and world-building, so the more time spent *not* fighting or wandering around into the castles and off hard-to-see cliffs, the greater it can be to worsening the overall experience. Where as with Diablo 3, the loot hunt is probably the sole reason most people choose to play the game.

And with the early Resident Evils (up to 5, really), much of your progress relies on developing proper inventory management skills. It's a core tenant of the gameplay that you expect to have to deal with going in.

I've not finished but I'd probably give it 7. Its got some great combat and the system for leveling up is sweet for changes and upgrades. The design of the map is great but it all bleeds together visually and can make exploration confusing as hell. Its rather small in scope and the story, while starting strong as if its going to be much more in depth then something like the Souls games and ends up.... just very basic and boring.

Thanks Karak.

I did that for LoTF and felt I got my money's worth, really enjoyed my time with the game. Will do the same here. Looks like this has some interesting mechanics so should be fun when I get round to it.

You bet man. Its better than Lords of the Fallen but brings its own problems as well. Thats good though and there is no doubt they learned some valuable lessons.
How is performance mode on ps4 pro? I bough the game on PC but i can't seem to run it at a solid 60fps with my setup.
FPS its good but it still has many of the same issues with textures and so forth.

Okay so I started the game on PC and I'm running into two problems:

1. It seems like my game is jumping back and forth between a locked 60 and then locked 30 fps, like it can't make up its mind, it is really jarring and making the game impossible to play.

2. I keep getting random dashes as if I pressed the dodge button when I'm not

This sucks...

for the record i have a gtx 780

With regard to #1, disable vsync. It's traditional double-buffer vsync, so if 60fps (60/1) can't be maintained, the framerate will drop to 30fps (60/2), followed by 20fps (60/3) if the framerate dips further still, etc.

TheSixthAxis - 8/10

Bugs and a weak narrative aside, The Surge is a much more confident take on the emerging Soul-like gameplay style. It takes the known tropes of being challenging and having progression dependent on learning attack patterns while adjusting your play style to accommodate, but it also has some fresh ideas that not only make perfect sense, but could shape future games. It’s nice to see a developer give a gameplay style a second shot and Deck13 have almost nailed it here.

Usually not a fan of your GAF posts but your review seemed fair and confirmed my worries about the game. Definitely waiting for it to come on sale now.

I like your reviews, they are always very fair, detailed and to the point. Infact I like them more than any other reviews for this very reason as it's not short where everything is crammed into 4-5 minutes not are they too long (like 30+ minutes) with lots of unnecessary stuff.

However I must ask you, is the level/enemies being similar that big of a deal to have you rate it "wait for sale"? Cause majority of your review is nothing but positives and even high praises when it comes to sound design, controls, upgrade system and combat. Plus the fact that it is quite unique in its approach and feeling with the changes it brings, despite essentially being a Souls clone, which is honestly quite unheard of in these sort of games for the most part, Nioh being an exception ofcourse.

Speaking of which, I recall your Nioh review where you mention about the game's problems which are not unlike the ones you speak of in your Surge review along with a cluttered upgrade system which Surge seemingly doesn't suffer from. And infact from your wording it felt like you were disappointed by the repetitiveness more over there but yet your verdict on that game was an absolute buy.

I'm just trying to understand what made you ultimately decide your different verdicts on both these games as they both seem to share quite similar flaws but with a lot of positives and being fun to play.

The game is only 5.6 GB? or am I only downloading part of it for some reason? (PS4)
It's the whole game. I'm pretty sure it's because:

1) They do tons of stuff in real time rather than bake the data.
2) There is below average to average variety in locations (meaning less textures to use overall).

Probably because the flaw here is much more extreme.

Nioh has enough enemy variety for a full game, it just goes on wayyyyyy too fuckin long and we'd already seen a large number of these enemies since alpha.
The levels are too big, and for whatever fuckin reason the game loves that one yokai too much.

The surge similar to niohs human enemies, has enemies which use the same weapons as you but it really does not have much else. The overwhelming majority of enemies are human enemies with X skin + Y weapon.
