THE THING prequel (first pics)

The first images from the Thing prequel popped up online today, and as soon as we saw them, we thought—Do we really have to wait until April 2011? Can't we see this movie right now?

There's no Kurt Russell to battle the evil shape-shifting alien creature this time around, as in John Carpenter's The Thing. Instead we have Joel Edgerton (King Arthur) as Sam Carter, a helicopter pilot who's essentially taking on the role of Russell's R.J. McReady for the movie.

Also on board as palaeontologist graduate student Kate Lloyd is actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), who will no doubt bring a feminine touch to the movie—make that a kick-ass feminine touch, judging from her action shot with the flamethrower.

The Thing prequel relates the story of what happened to those Norwegian researchers just before the 1982 film opened, putting all our questions to rest once and for all (at least we hope so).

Here's the official synopsis:

Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they're infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up.

When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.

Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., the movie also stars Eric Christian Olsen (Tru Calling, NCIS: Los Angeles) and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost). It will open April 29, 2011.

What do you think of the pics? Do you think the prequel can possibly compare to John Carpenter's 1982 film?

Looking forward to it! Makes sweet love to the thing :D

It prequel might end like in the beginning of "the thing", when they find
the destroyed houses with the cube of ice

I first saw the original movie about two years ago and I absolutely loved it for special effects(dat dog transformation) and leaving the aliens origin vague. I hope this movie doesn't kill the two things I loved about it.

Pretty much. The Thing is an amazing movie and this seems entirely unnecessary to me. I'm sure it will just end up being a total rip off of the original with updated special effects.

I liked the original's emphasis on paranoia and isolation rather than "omg it's an alien!" The premise for this already has me worried they'll just sell the alien transforming CG effects more than the characters.

So, in the end of this movie, EVERYONE except the Chopper Pilot and Kurt Russell's brother-in-law dies, and then flies off to chase the dog?

Well, no need to see the movie now. :D

They need to show the monster, because that was the real star of the original. Sadly it's likely to be some shitty CG thing.

NO! what made the movie good was that you didn't know what exactly "the thing" was (how it looked). I hope they leave it like that.

But you know you're going to be dissapointed when we see the monster in this prequel.

I would've rather seen a remake than a prequel, to be honest. At least then we wouldn't already know how it's going to end.

The casting is terrible, no Carpenter or Kurt Russell and we already know how it ends? Well, that sounds tempting.

I think the two leads are very sympathetic and fresh. Great casting so far. The most important thing about the story is the guessing-who. As long as they focus on that, they might have a decent production on hand.

Geez this is gonna be a depressing movie since we already know how it ends for all the characters--very badly (I suppose you could say that about the first movie too though).

The Carpenter version still holds its own after so many years.
I bought it on Blu-ray. I love that movie.

I also own it on BD and it is my favorite horror film of all time. This can only end up being terrible and I will try my best from now on to ignore it.

Don't forget the unknown director. Who the hell is this guy?

picture is fail. cast is fail. the first movie had a believable cast, this one seems like standard hollywood casting of good looking people.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead? too pretty and too young.

i will still watch it but i expect it'll be something on the level of predators at best.

Agreed. Should have been Sarah Polley.

they're making the remake of Escape from New York With Gerard Butler.............................
Actually Butler dropped out way back.

And chalk this movie up as one of those unnecessary films. Last I heard about it was several years ago, and figured it got shelved. But now they're bringing it back? *Spit*

Huh, based on one of the pics at the link...the characters go inside the alien ship.

Interesting, and to be honest I'm still really interested in this prequel. If only so get some more background info on the camp and its crew.

It depends on how they make it. I always thought the original was made in such a way that a prequel would be easy to make. Heck the video game told a heck of a story itself and served as a good prequel. They just can't make it a special effects-fest.
