THE THING prequel (first pics)

That shot is WAY to clean looking. Seriously, she didn't get ANYTHING on her while burning a crazy space alien/virus made of warping flesh? The Thing is my favourite horror movie, but why the hell does it need a prequel?

I'm sure it'll be full of CGI too. Uggggggh.

Unnecessary. You got pretty much everything you needed to know about the origin (other than the reason for the crash) and other camp in the first 10 minutes of the original.

Absolutely nothing interesting about this project or it's premise.

Are prequel movies ever good anyway? I liked Temple of Doom but that's all that comes to mind.

Fuck yeah! It's good to know that the Norwegian crew had Americans and women with them, otherwise I never would have given a fuck!

Prequels generally suck because they tell backstories that are better left to the imagination. How much cooler was Darth Vader before you found out he was a whiny little bitch that hated stand. And how much cooler was that alien's skeleton from Alien before you found out that he was Zardoz the Giant Elephant Warrior who manufactured the aliens as a biological weapon in an attempt to save the woman he loved somehow!

To be fair, the John Carpenter version is a remake, so this isn't the first time someone has gone back to this well.

Being fair again, the videogame they came out with a few years ago on the Xbox (Which was considered a "sequel" I think) was actually pretty good....:D

Not that I doubt this will be shit, but, it's not just because it's a prequel. I believe that a good filmmaker working with talented people can make damn near anything viewable, it's just that most American produced horrors these days are sooooo fucking uninspired, you can't expect much from this.

I consider the Blood Testing Scene to be one of the greatest scenes in the history of horror/thriller movies. So suspenseful, never gets old.

they're making the remake of Escape from New York With Gerard Butler.............................

Oh fuck off Hollywood.

...Well, unless you cast Hendricks as the booby lady who hangs out with Brain

I only saw the original movie a few months ago and was blown away by it. The effects work was incredible and looked better than most CGI, and the movie as a whole was superb. I have a morbid curiosity about this prequel but that's about it, just like with the Alien prequel.

I think the two leads are very sympathetic and fresh. Great casting so far. The most important thing about the story is the guessing-who. As long as they focus on that, they might have a decent production on hand.
Well, sympathetic isn't going to cut it in a movie about claustrophobic paranoia. imo the cast looks painfully generic. The Thing needs good characters to work, and I doubt these people are up for the task. That goes for the script as well.
Kurt Russell, the epitome of awesome, is replaced by a guy, best known for his forgettable part in the terrible "King Arthur".
Also, the girl is "palaeontologist graduate student Kate Lloyd", whom the article believe will add "a kick-ass feminine touch". Sounds the usual Hollywood idiocy to me.

I also own it on BD and it is my favorite horror film of all time. This can only end up being terrible and I will try my best from now on to ignore it.

Don't forget the unknown director. Who the hell is this guy?
I honestly don't know. His IMDB profile isn't too promising either http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0374048/

I would've rather seen a remake than a prequel, to be honest. At least then we wouldn't already know how it's going to end.
Prequels in general suck, but this is possibly the most ill-conceived one yet. We already pieced together what happened at the Norwegian camp in the John Carpenter movie. We figured it out as those characters did. Any twists or turns will probably just end up devaluing what happened in that one. I just can't see what this could have to offer.

Should have just remade the original, that'd be less perplexing to fans and non-fans don't give a shit either way. Or take the premise and move it to a totally different environment and situation.

Why make a movie about the Swedes? We all know what happened. They dig up the alien, it infects them, they kill each other off, last one takes the form of a dog and runs to the American base where the hero of the Swedes gets shot in the head by the leader of the American expedition.

Everything you could possibly need to know is spelled out in the first movie, what a waste of time.

How cute, they're sending a bunch of babies to fight The Thing.

Did their parents have to sign permission slips?

That's Ramona Flowers with a fucking flamethrower. The only thing that'd be better if she got to use her giant hammer too.

Heathen!

Such good taste you have my brotha.

Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., the movie also stars Eric Christian Olsen (Tru Calling, NCIS: Los Angeles) and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost). It will open April 29, 2011.

Hey, it's Von (Vaughn? the guy with small nipple) from "Community".

It depends on how they make it. I always thought the original was made in such a way that a prequel would be easy to make. Heck the video game told a heck of a story itself and served as a good prequel. They just can't make it a special effects-fest.

the game was a sequel and told a horrible story. turned the story into a D-grade resident evil mixed with government cover up. fucking horrible. jersey shore tells a better story than the game did.

Lol @ the 2 dudes talking about the teaser:

Why did they call it The Thing? The director's name is too long to be called "That guy's The Thing".

Ha, yeah. Alex was pretty hung up on that. I don't mind.

Even with a great script, the only way this movie has a chance of standing on its own is if they make the mutations totally off-putting and spectacular. They have to go beyond gross or tasteless or even just cool. Even fans of the original should be bothered by what is shown. Yuzna's Society should look tame in comparison.

This is not likely to happen, though.

I haven't seen any CGI-Splatter FX yet that can compete with hand-made effects.
The Things' effects look better than everything CGI.

CGI can burn in hell when I see something like this
Agreed, with practical even if I know its fake it can still scare me.

Rian Johnson's Brick had the tagline A detective story.
Thats just dull, this one is oxymoronic'

It should be something like "they thought they were alone, they weren't"
or "In the Antarctic no one can hear you scream, well they can but its too cold for them to care."

Taking a quality aspect of the original film doesn't make the remake any more or less likely to be good.

In fact, if it doesn't stand up on its own two horribly mutated feet then it probably will suck. I'm looking at you, Predators. And - to a lesser extent - you, Superman Returns.
