1C and Ubisoft Announce IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover

World famous IL-2 Sturmovik series of flight simulators roars over Britain. 1C Company and Ubisoft announced that IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (for PC) will take off in March 2011.
IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover is the latest instalment in the acclaimed IL-2 Sturmovik series from award-winning developer 1C: Maddox Games.

IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover takes place in 1940 during the pivotal aerial battle for the skies over Britain between the British, the German and the Italian air forces.
Key Features:
• New aircraft: incredibly detailed true-to-life modeling of aircraft systems based on thousands of hours of dedicated research. Every single aircraft component can be damaged for realistic and immensely satisfying results.
- Flyable aircraft – Over a dozen famous and highly detailed English, German and Italian aircraft available, with all crew positions open to players. All flyable aircraft have been painstakingly researched, resulting in incredibly accurate cockpit interiors (including Spitfire, Hurricane, Messerschmitt and the Stuka).
- Non-flyable aircraft – 13 AI controlled additional aircraft are also available to allow an even more accurate and immersive experience thanks to a varied aircraft.
• Immersive game modes:
- Exciting Single-Player Campaign – The campaign thrusts the player into the middle of the battle. The player will join the British Air Force to fight the German forces and renegade pilots on his own side, or join the German Luftwaffe and take part in meticulously recreated historical battles.
- Massive multiplayer – Customizable modes range from simple deathmatch-style free-for-alls to epic, ongoing 128 player battles that can last hours, days, weeks, or even longer.
- Interactive training – Comprehensive interactive training for new players – fly a real WWII trainer plane with a computer controlled instructor through a series of training missions.

• Brand new setting – The battle will take place on a large area spanning London and southern England in the north, to Northern France and Belgium in the south. The huge map will contain thousands of historical cities, towns, roads, airfields, radar stations, ports, and industrial areas – all located exactly where they were in 1940.
• New 3D engine – Latest-gen graphics engine with DX10 and DX11 API support. Huge variety of photorealistic ground vehicles, buildings and other environmental elements recreate minute details of 1940s Europe.
• Customizable difficulty – dozens of realism options allow newcomers to the franchise to reduce the difficulty and focus on the fun while learning the ropes of being a pilot.

1C and Ubisoft also announced that IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover will be available in a special Collector’s Edition, along-side the standalone version.
This Collector’s Edition features the following collection of exclusive pilot material assets in a premium packaging:
- The Windows PC version of IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover
- A cloth pilot escape map showing The Battle of Britain strategic locations
- A replica of the Pilot’s Notes on the Spitfire I Aeroplane, provided to RAF pilots during The Battle of Britain and reprinted from the RAF Museum original document
- An in-depth 150-page ring binder pilot instructions

So I'll kick off the skepticism; Ubisoft is distributing and it says "Internet connection required to activate" but not "Internet connection required to play". DRM specifics?

Didn't they recently get rid of the always online while playing drm? The games with it just do a check when you start the game now, I think.

I'm not a huge fan of the Battle of Britain era and it looks worse than some IL-2 mods and a lot worse than Wings of Prey, but I won't care if the 128 player online works well and has enough players.

Hopefully they get back to work on the Korea expansion.

Oh my god, don't pollute the thread with the ETERNAL COPYRIGHT DRM BULLSHIT DEBATE that has been a total plague in every god damn thread lately. ENOUGH! NO MORE! Can we talk about gameplay on GAF? Discussing the issues endlessly wont change a thing at all.

On another note:

I picked up Wings of Prey last week to play with my X52, and its a pretty awesome game so far. I also bought IL-2 1946, and I think I bought the wrong game or something, the graphics were incredibly primitive, and the menus were incredibly awful. I believe its the old 2001 version? I need to actually spend time with it. The old interface and primitive graphics are such a turn off to me :(

It's pretty awesome that they are using a new engine for this one, I can't wait to buy it. How is the damage model in Il-2? Strangely enough, its an important point for me.. Wings of Prey is a graphical powerhouse, but its a bit annoying how there are like 3 types of damage models.. The engine blows up, or a wing gets cut off. It's kinda neat the first 10 times, but eh.. I want more details!

I'm really interested in that multiplayer mode.. Is this game going to on steam too? I've heard epic tales of multiplayers battles in the previous titles, but that the community is really serious business (tm).

If the DRM is so intrusive that it interrupts gameplay it becomes part of the gameplay. I got kicked out of my shitty free copy of HAWX 2 several times because a keyboard button I used was also the "quit when you internet craps out" button.

What settings? Use OpenGL and set every to "Perfect" and it looks pretty good for a 2001 game engine.

The damage model quality is all over the place, but all aircraft do have damage to most major parts and pieces . Some planes are from the original release and haven't been updated. Newer planes are detailed and well done.

This is Storm of War, right? I see Maddox mentioned.

What I don't see mentioned is co-op, though. What gives? Lack of this would be a major game-killer.

That Collector's Edition is to die for, though. Coolest CE ever. I have a Cold War era silk escape map of Greece. Escape maps are awesome.

EDIT: http://www.ubi.com/UK/Games/Info.aspx?pId=9329
"Be involved in strategic cooperative missions"
I guess this could be separate from the main campaign.

I don't think it makes sense to have the entire thread be a discussion about the issue or the ethics or whatever, but I do think it's important to clarify it because it's a make or break deal for a lot of potential purchasers. Getting an answer on what the DRM is isn't polluting the thread, it's providing important information.

Yes I assume that they changed the name. Oleg is the key.

I 100% guarantee it has co-op. IL-2 does.

Was wondering what was going on, since I thought the IL-2 successor was being called Storm of War: Battle of Britain.

Anyway, great news that it's hitting so soon. Love IL-2.

At first glance, I'd say Wings of Prey has the graphics edge.

Yeah I would expect it to, since this version is sure to have much more going on under the hood in terms of physics and damage modeling and such. I don't think Oleg had much to do with Wings of Prey.

thanks for the laugh
the slow burn of realization that came with clicking on this thread was a unique and wonderful feeling.

this is storm of war, the near mythical sequel to the unrelenting genre king, still polishing its crown after a decade. and it's out in two months.

I wish this was done more often. "Hey, this awesome anticipated game is for real and it's out in two months, have a nice day" should be the norm, not announcing stuff years before it's ready to be released.

well, it was technically announced a long time ago, before oleg maddox and his cabal of aeronautical physicists went into full entrenched russian genius mode and severed all contact with the outside world.

Putting the ex-Soviet Union aircraft designers to good use imo.

I will be all over this on release day. Hopefully the multiplayer is well done; as this will be a nice suppliment to Falcon. : )

We need a neogaf squadron~!

It took a little while to sink in, between the name change confusion and the questionably capped PR screens. I initially glossed over the feature list PR and the trailer, but now I'm reading and watching and exclamation points are cascading down all over my face.

Day 1.

I personally have no problem with DRM, provided three things.

1) It does not require an "Always connected" internet status
2) It does not have an overly limited activation methiod. I don't mind a machine limit or number of times per month, but don't lock me out of the game forever because I installed and deleted the game 3 times over 4 years or what ever.
3) Don't open any gaping secrety breaches.

Even then, if the DRM provides problemtatic, I can just crack it.

Hope the campaign selection is more user friendly in this game then the old Il-2.

128 player battles
Whhhaaa. Oh my, thats sounds simply great. I haven't put to much time into the other games in the series, how large were their multiplayer modes?

Hmm, not as impressive as I expected. Wings of Prey seems to have the edge over it. And as someone who prefers only semi-real the ability to turn off spins, redouts, etc is not nearly as good as made-from-scratch "arcade" mode.

Oh wow that collectors edition is going to cause me problems.

Any word on this having anything close to IL-2s level editor?

It doesn't, it's activation. If it was always connected it would say 'permanent connection required'.

Nah, it would just delete the word "Activation", and leave it at "Internet Connection Required"

And I like how it seems the training mode improved, I disliked how in the old Il-2 it just showed a 'video' of how to do it.

I also hope there is some faster pased compane missions along with the normal stuff, it is just dull flying in a stright line for 8 minutes to get to the point where you can start doing anything. Can't even make us of the ability to speed up the game or else something cause the plane to shift angle, and ends up going into the ground.

Sucks that air combat simulation games are not popular anymore.

I was a huge fan of EA's U.S. Navy Fighters.

Drkirby said:
Anyway, what is with saying it is the true sequel, Wings of Prey not good enough for you!
I didn't say that, the thread title was changed. dumbed down consoler version of the original thread title. I like wings of prey though (and apache air assault). but it's not really a IL-2 game.

Evolved1

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
Those cockpits look amazing... omg. No animated pilot right? Just the cockpits?

Haha, yeah. I remember one session I played with my co-op buddy. We were in a 2-seater, him piloting and me being rear gunner. We just spent a couple of minutes flying to the mission. I think we died because I was reading a book or playing DS.
