As a GS manager I can assure you the WiiU will be there. Nintendo are doing big things to get GS employees attention to talk about it. At E3 this year if you work for GameStop and are going they are letting you in 1 1/2 hours early on Wednesday to Nintendos booth only to play WiiU without the crowd.

Also remember with that Expo, there wont be much if any GameStop people around other than some employees who are paid just to watch over the show (security, badge checkers, etc.) as the managers themselves will be in their conference rooms during that show, we see the Expo the night before, this is for FANS only, the devs, publishers, etc. are running the public show.

May I ask a question or two?
When do GameStops know whether they'll be doing a midnight launch for new systems?

I ask because there are two GameStops near me, and I'm trying to choose between the two for my preorder camping and Launch Day festivities. If one launches at midnight and the other launches at 10AM, I'm going with the midnight one, obviously.

(many thanks for your help on this one!)

It really depends, some of us smarter store managers do midnight's no matter what. For "official" times usually 3 weeks to a month in advance, sometimes even farther out depending on the title. For a system launch it just depends on company wide reserves. We only had 2 of 16 stores in our district open at midnight for Vita, but I opened my store anyways just to take care of the customers because that's more of an event and it should happen.

Yes. That's what I'm talking about. Some ninty fans just want to know that the games are there and that's it. The equivalent of a tease really.

The impression I get is that a lot of these fans don't necessarily care much about many of those games in the first place (on Wii U or otherwise). The demand for Wii U ports comes more from a desire to see the Wii U accepted as one of the "major platforms" for which third parties dedicate a significant chunk of resources.

Nintendo doesn't need to woo Nintendo fans; they need to woo the third-party fans who have a casual interest in Nintendo games, and I still don't know how they're going to accomplish this. I hope the padlet's applications are compelling enough, but I have my doubts.

Thanks for your help on this. I ask because I take time off for the week of launch, and I don't want to spend vacation time waiting for a store to open at 10AM when I could have it right at the beginning of Launch Day. (I know it's only 10 hours.. but this is just a quirk that I've always had..) :p

Speaking of pellets. Anyone else prefer the transparent version in P1 as opposed to the opaque ones in P2?
To be honest, I've never noticed the difference. What will you do if they bring back the transparent pellets, but bring back the caves.

Well I dont think they need to buy every 3rd party title that comes out. But there are certainly flagship titles that if they get poor support 3rd parties will quickly Gamecube the system. Nintendo fans cant cry for 3rd party support then ignore the major titles and expect 3rd parties to keep trying
The problem has never been Nintendo fans. There was a brief discussion about 3rd party sales in the current Media Create thread. They get their sales when they show up.

Said it before and i'll say i again: we nintendo fans need to step our fucking game up and put our money where our mouths are.

Resident Evil 6
Tomb Raider
Half Life 3
Bioshock Infinite
Bordernlands 2
Assassin's Creed 3
GTA V
Aliens CM
Darksiders II
Call of Duty: Blops 2
Cloudberry Kingdom
Castlevania LOS2
Rayman Legends

You tell me that out of all these titles that could show up on the WiiU, some of you can't even find three of them appealing? We have to do our part.
"Do our part?" I have a shelf of games I don't like from me doing my part. I doesn't change anything... they'll either support the system or they won't. No one should have to buy a game they're not interested in just to make a point that no one will listen to.

You should still try :(

I can't imagine choosing not to transition.
Technically I wouldn't say I'm the same case as most that undergo the transition. I've always felt off, but it was never something that got to me. And as time went on I just found less of a reason to tell my family (as progressive as they are I'm the last "straight" male of the line). So I be me. Female in male body, bag of neurosis.

I think my family is beginning to question more and more why I've never been in a relationship for longer than a month, and none of them have ever been "confirmed".

I am who I am. I'm still attracted to women, but just much hairier than the insides feel.

When it becomes reservable go to each store and talk to the manager. They should tell you what their plans are.

In bold is what needs to change. Can someone really honestly say that nintendo first party titles are all that they desire to play? Not one third party game peaks your interest? I know when I didn't have a 360, I really wanted to play Bioshock.

Well I got some of the prequels for my 360 and PS3 and I'm really not interested in any of those except for maybe AC3 and GTA V. I have nothing against those games, but I probably won't get any of the rest.

Edit: If the Wii U's online is on par with XBL then I will get CoD Blops 2 for the Wii U.

The sad thing is a lot of people will just hear Nintendo and not think about 3rd party games. Today I was talking about E3 with someone at work and mentioned the WiiU and he just gave me a face and shook his head. I asked him what he knew about it and he knew pretty much NOTHING. I told him to watch the conference and read about it after E3, don't just make assumptions now. Doubt it'll work, but hey I tried.

No fucking duh. What i'm saying is that out all the titles I listed, can someone really find not one of them interesting enough to pick them up? You picking up a game you didn't like is your fault. There are plenty of gaming sites and ways to inform yourself to paint a picture of whether or not you will like a specific game.

Hey that's great. I probably will only end up getting like three outta that list myself. I wanna try out Rayman and I know the last one reviewed really well. I wanna see what all the hubbub surrounding the AC games is about and GTAV is a day one buy. I'm a huge HL fan but lord only knows when that game will see the light of day. And how the fuck could I forget about Bioshock. I'm asking for third party support because I want it and will support it. It would be awesome to be able to game on one system.\\\

Edit: Jesus Christ. Put me down for Blops 2. Treyarch really seems to be trying some new things here and if the online is competent, I'm there.

Am I a bad person for owning the first two HL and haven't yet to play them? I've only played mutliplayer and never played the single player. Probably won't any time soon since my backlog is huge, unless HL3 is announced for the Wii U :p

Oh, and to be slightly on topic the only titles announced so far I want are Assassin's Creed and Arkham City.

Until Pikmin, Zelda, Mario, Metroid... well pretty much pull from Nintendo's Happy Bag is announced I don't really have much interest in the platform.

This in combo with the new controller focus leaves me kind of iffy on the whole thing.

Usually I'll buy a game on the system it runs best on, barring stupid delays (PC versions of things) or other considerations (all my friends are getting it on 360 and it is mostly multiplayer, like a fighting game, or my better arcade stick is for that system).

So I can see myself getting a few Wii U versions of third party games.

I have the first, and never made it out of Black Mesa. I have the orange box and have played those games to hell and back. In short, you should feel bad. Don't play until Episode Three drops though. It would make the wait unbearable.

I need a reason at all to get the system. I mean... yes Nintendo's games will be there, and I'll want them, but today? Nothing. The wait between info about this system is more than a little irritating. 9 days left out of way too damn many.

What is Nintendo banking on once the other two consoles have been released?

Unique features? An established userbase? Or will success simply (once again) come to its own franchises - both new and old - keeping it afloat?

Or is it banking on its competitors only going with a marginal increase in power?

Controller, power and price. :)

I'll keep this in mind. HL3 probably won't be announced for a good while anyways :p

I pretty much do the same thing. I usually end up with the 360 version of a multiplatform because my PC is garbage.

See guys, if it wasn't for Thraktor's (quite elaborate and eloquent) response I'd have never seen bg's original paging. Who said something about WUSTs slowing down on the community side? Anyhow, let me try and answer the darn question.

I largely share Thraktor's take on dedicated/primarily raytracing-targeting silicon in the wiiU. We are very close to the next threshold in visualisation where quantitative accumulations will bring to the next qualitative change (see http://raytracey.blogspot.com, http://igad.nhtv.nl/~bikker/, IMG's raytracing SDK, et al), but that will most likely not happen during this pending console generation. Or at least I don't expect anything large or paradigm-shifty ..Well, save for the odd ambitious indie dev toying with relatively low-res output devices coupled to relatively powerful console units *wink-wink nudge-nudge*.

Speaking of what viable enhancements nintendo might have got into their amd-grown gpu, a possibility there that has been largely neglected over the past WUST talks is that it could be something *not* ALU-related. We have already discussed the role a gpu-local edram pool could have. But everything so far has been largely inferred from the way Xenos used its edram - i.e. as a very performant fb. The advent of GPGPU has brought to the gpu landscape some very non-graphics tweaks like local storages/caches shared between ALU clusters, and basically all kinds of niceties mainly addressing the *data paths* in the gpu rather than what gpu ALUs constitute (ok, those too, but that's been rather evolutionary).

Surely Thraktor is absolutely correct to say that whatever nintendo might have come up with, amd & nv must have already considered, or even implemented, into their current/future architectures. But let's not forget what nintendo are bargaining for here: they are not ordering some unheard-of tech integrated in an off-the-shelf part, no - they are bargaining for the best bang for transistor. To translate that into simple terms, you can think of nintendo cherry-picking from the amd gardens to a fruit basket that best suites nintendo's fruit salad (aha! and you thought bad metaphors were only cars-related ; ) What does that mean? Not any alien tech, that's for sure. That simply means that:
a. U-GPU will have its own ISA (derived from known amd ISA(s), but still unique), and
b. U-GPU will put its (rumored) fat edram pool to the best possible use, i.e. beyond Xenos' use case.

Will that make U-GPU extraterrestrial, omnipotent, etc? - Nope. Will it make it a very darn impressive gpu for the amount of transistors it has? - Quite likely.

Oh, and btw, did I ever mention GFLOPs do not a gpu constitute?

I agree that a hardware raytracer is not going to be there. Would you be able to fake GI/Radiosity though with a fixed function "thing" like a TEV 2.0? Is that something that could be built into hardware?

Like for instance could you have a fixed function sort of hardware solution, that says ok what geo is close to me, it's shader is this color, and based on distance adds a percentage of that color to it's self. I think I explained that right.

I know I'm screwing up some terms here so sorry about that, hopefully the idea comes across so it still makes sense to you.

Yep. I've never played Pikmin so I'm definitely going to get Pikmin 3 but if the Mario game isn't in the vein of 64 or Galaxy then count me out--I never could get into the 3D mario games save maybe Yoshi's Island and NSMB.

I thought Capcom said there isn't a WiiU version of Resident Evil 6 in development? Now BioShock Infinite should really get a port, what with the delay to 2013.

There probably isn't, but I think they'll eventually bring it. They have a pretty good relationship with Nintendo, so it would be weird for them not to eventually port it over.

Optimistic posters have used Capcom's wording surround the game to suggest that there actually is a WiiU version in development. Just threw it up as an example really.

The only way I see myself getting any of these for the Wii U is if it has something significant over the PS3 versions.

I don't know. It seems to me that for a lot of stalwart Nintendo fans, the AAA console space has simply been progressively moving away from what they want. I have relatively broad tastes, but not everyone does, and I can hardly fault them for what they like.

What I would specifically like to see is more third party developers attempting to unlock that Nintendo secret, going forward. Rayman Origins is proof that it can be done (and, in particular, by a Western developer).

For me just being on the WiiU is enough. The less clutter surrounding my TV the better. But you present what will certainly be another interesting challenge for nintendo. How do they win fans like you over? Why get Blops 2 on WiiU when all of your friends have it on the 360 already?

I can see that. I'm not a dude bro by any means but come on. Not every AAA third party effort is a dudebro game. Take Portal 2 for example. That game is so nintendo.

I buy games on the console I'm most comfortable playing on as priority 1, priority 2 is if I have someone(s) I want to play with then I'll give a point towards that console as well. I generally don't care about quality differences unless it's something so blatantly offensive, which is rarely the case for me. Ignorance is bliss (or not caring enough).

Pretty much. I just took a look over my Wii games and I don't see many 3rd party games at all, and the ones that are there are exclusive. I would not have a problem getting it for the Wii U but something about that version really has to stand out so that I just don't go for the PS3 version. I have a 360 but I detest the controller so I got most games on the PS3 this generation, even though the vast majority of games run or look better on the 360.

If Nintendo could do something like Link in Soul Calibur 2 that would push me towards the Wii U, but the games just looking a bit better or stuff on the controller probably won't be enough to change my mind, I hope that 3rd parties show some interesting ideas for the controller and not just say BS like "it opens up many possibilities" or "we are very excited" they need to do something not Nintendo.

I've seen glimpses of great games in the third-party repetoire. Like, there are games I like, but only a few I truly love. Like this:

Eh, the late-in-coming ports from 360/PS3 are only a problem for WiiU for the time being. After awhile the third-party games will release day and date on all three systems.

That is, until the Xbox 720 and PS4 come out a year later, at which point WiiU's back to the same situation the Wii in regards to third-party games, lol.

But if I get the Wii U version, how will I get Trophies for my PSN account!?

And RE6 on Wii U, in 2012? LOL

You're right. It's as likely as a new Viewtiful Joe game getting announced.

I'll stop now :p

Seriously, it might come further down the line but definitely not in 2012 if Capcom isn't lying.

Yikes, I spend a day outside this thread and Ace is perm'd, and jump button and Poo are gone as well. We're the latter two perms as well? Anyways, it's depressing but not overly surprising and Nirolak's post is very helpful.

Just nine more days, guys. :/
