The Witcher 3 | Review Thread

I doubt it, he likes to put end game scenes into his reviews. TW2 review actually had a pretty major scene at the end in his review. I never watch his reviews anymore for games I plan on playing.

Yeah I wait till ive finished it to see if I agree with his points these days. He should avoid doing that in my opinion

JK-Money nailed it in the PS4 gameplay thread. It literally looks like an oil painting that came to life.

That's lovely, but unless Geralt is wearing a vibrating codpiece, that water is completely unrealistic. Or maybe he just gives new meaning to the phrase "rippling thighs."

No XBO copies were sent out for review.

They didn't send any PC copies out, reasons unknown. They did mention that they have been hammering on performance for past two weeks, but I doubt that as reason for holding PC copies back as this hammering should also affect PS4 version.

Well, the PC version has to take into account hundreds of different hardware configurations.

I can see the console versions being completed first, in that aspect.

I hope they don't have any hiccups with the PC release. I always hold my breath when it comes to PC performance, so far as the game simply functioning as intended out of the box vs. waiting 3 or 4 patches later for the dust to settle.

Wow the pages flew up. What am I missing? Framerate causing a big stir?
On ps4 at least. But CDPR is good with post game coverage and they're already hard at work on providing a later patch for the game so it runs better. Some reviews are saying it isn't that bad others are saying it's bad. So I guess it's up to your individual tolerance

-Anxiety about "fetch quests" - This game likely doesn't have "fetch quests" in the traditional sense... not like "collect X of this" as in Dragon Age, and more like "go on this journey and return to me this item" with a sub-plot to back it up.
-Anxiety about combat system - I admit, every time I see fighting in the video reviews, it doesn't look too shit hot...
-Anxiety about framerate / tech issues / level of dirt detail - meh. Hopefully will be ironed out. But may not be at this late point.
-Anxiety about Jeff Gerstmann's tweet that upset everyone (he's not that into the game) - link to this?? (I know thread has a warning, I don't want to discuss, just read it)
-Anxiety about whether or not this will be GOTY - It likely will be for many publications. Gametrailers gave it a 9.8 for crying out loud...
.

No, that's not what I am getting at or what I said. Why are you so defensive about that?

I am not willing to blindly hail the accuracy of a "10/10" from Gamespot or a particular reviewer as some sort of gospel truth. For me MGS4 as a 10/10 is so ridiculously off the mark, ergo I am less likely to agree with a particular reviewer's opinion (since I haven't played the games he reviews at the time - in the case of all launch reviews).

Completely disregarding that, looking around at plenty of these outlets shows variable criticisms suggesting it is not a perfect game. My opinions regularly don't match most outlets, but do frequently match collated user review scores, which is what I will look at when there are enough of them, then decide whether to purchase or not based from that and friends opinions.

Why my disagreement with MGS4 being a 10/10 game is enough for you to lose your shit, when you mention it isn't a 10/10 game for you either, makes no sense to me.

maybe you should read my post again. and to make my point, the original post said "oh well he gave mgs4 a 10/10 so witcher 3 being 10/10 is lulz."

if you are going to generalize as such, then there is no 10/10 game because no game is perfect. yet, with all the flaws, witcher 3 is in the 90-100 range of scores. a 10/10 from gamespot isn't an outlier, nor is it the exception to the rule. no one is saying it is a perfect game, gamespot said it is a 10/10 game.

Skyrim is large as an ocean, deep as a puddle.

Witcher 3 seems to be large as two oceans, and deep as a...lake ? :)

In any case, it seems like first AAA RPG that sucessfully joins quality story/characters/quest design with huge open world ripe for exploration.

Next contender: Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

That's more or less the conclusion I reached as well after looking at some reviews, but it's only by playing it that it will be obvious to see if CDP succeeded or not. :p It's already tempting just by the extra gameplay bits that they added, like swimming and horse riding / fighting. I'm sure that even if the combat won't be on par with what From offer, it's going to be superior to the latest Bethesda offering easily. :p

That's lovely, but unless Geralt is wearing a vibrating codpiece, that water is completely unrealistic. Or maybe he just gives new meaning to the phrase "rippling thighs."

Funny story, from the Triss POV in Blood of Elves, Witchers give off a pleasant vibration sensation when touched by a magic user.

Slightly worried about the lack of reviews for the Xbox One version, which is the one I have preordered. The framerate drops the reviews have found seem to be CPU-related, so they should not be worse in Xbox One...I hope

This is like anything in games at the moment; it isn't really meant to be realistic. We could complain about lens flares and heavy over saturation all day

Amazing reviews so far, but Kevin's 10 (gamespot's review) is not special since he gave Dragon Age: Inquisition 9/10 and didn't mention the bad fetch quests and the other bad things in the game. Anyway, I'm huge fan of the series and I can't wait for my copy.

Marcin Iwinski, Community Manager CDProjekt

“This is the last stretch and we’re pushing hard -- over the last two weeks, we’ve increased performance on all platforms and started working full speed on the expansions, Hearts of Stone & Blood and Wine.”

So I assume this means the review copies are not yet fully up to date with patches.

From IGN's complaints about the main plot vs the stronger side plots, my problem will be:

- main story may not interest me enough to motivate me to finish it if I focus on that
- sub plots may burn me out before I ever get close to finishing the game

I'm starting to get a little worried about the combat..

Witcher 2 combat almost made me stop playing a few times. W3 really needs to be a big step up in that regard.

Well, it seems like the X1 version Dynamically Scales™ from 1080p down to 900p in order to counteract framerate drops. Fingers crossed.

Well no, actually that isn't what the post say. All I saw and still see are these:

10/10 from Gamespot!? That's massive, they don't hand those out left and right.

They gave MGS4 a 10 and it was by the same reviewer. Yep.. MGS4.

mgs4 was a 10/10 game, though.

I'm afraid I'm also of the opinion that MGS4 is in no way a 10/10 game.

Many said they weren't and even are waiting for these patches to drop before giving scores.

I thought it was the PC version still waiting on a big performance patch. The review copies already had a performance patch to help, although more bug fixes are on the way.

All this coverage and I haven't see any giant spiders.

Don't wanna get my hopes up, but is this a fantasy RPG without spiders everywhere??

GAF's most anticipated title for 2015 per the poll, right? looking like a good call, gafhivemind.

I guess I'm in now too. I give myself over to the hype.

edit:
That's lovely, but unless Geralt is wearing a vibrating codpiece, that water is completely unrealistic. Or maybe he just gives new meaning to the phrase "rippling thighs."

....
where would one get one of these vibrating codpieces, and how much are they?

Any fantasy RPG without giant spiders is automatically a 10/10.
That's what I'm saying.

Still feel like they'll be hiding in here somewhere, but as someone who has an irrational fear of spiders (and most insects in general) I ran into way too many of them in shit like Skyrim or the last Dragon Age. I actually modded those fuckers out of Skyrim on PC.

From the Gamesradar review (which is maybe the media I like the most for reviews):

Oh oh.
Uh oh =/

So, about that "insider" that told us to wait for reviews....lol

I don't think that means the insider was totally wrong. CDPR delayed the shit out of this game and it's still got a few issues here and there, according to these reviews. At the time that person either worked at CDPR or saw the game, he was probably pretty correct. It could have been messy as fuck even up to a few months ago.
