The Wonder Years wasn't very realistic in terms of Kevin's age...

... I managed to get all the episodes from somebody on 21 CD-Rs for free online, and I'm watching them now from the begining...

Kevin is still 12 and so far he's:

- Had his first kiss that wasn't some small peck on the lips
- Smoked ciggerates (didn't even cough for his first time)
- Drank beer (didn't end up vomiting)
- Shoplifted a sex book from a book store

Plus Winnie has turned into a slut and is going out with an eigth grader.

Keep in mind the time era this is supposed to be taking place in.

I don't think that's all that unusual for a 12-year-old. I was in seventh grade when I was 12. I didn't do any of that stuff but I know people who did.

I forgot what happened to everyone at the end of the show. Didn't his brother become a pothead drifter or something?

This stuff happens all the time, even in the past. They make it seem like that in the 50's that this stuff never happens, but it's a lie.

Speaking of unrealistic, Kevin turned down the goddess Madeline Adams at least twice for the so-called "Super Cooper". :lol

Mmmmmmmm.....

Julie Condra was 20 when she played "Madeline Adams" who was supposed to be the same age as Kevin (14). I mean, I knew she had to be older, but I didn't suspect six years (though she looks and acts it, of course, in retrospect).

Btw, she's still hot:

Oh yeah. I just don't think she holds a candle to Madeline. Though I guess that was the point. Winnie and Kevin were supposed to have something special that went past superficialities.

Yeah, I never understood that...Madeline was a million times hotter then Winnie. Plus Madeline wasn't a bitch, while Winnie pretty much defined the word. Stupid Kevin.

The hottest Wonder Years woman BY FAR though had to be Kevin's teacher Miss White/Miss Heimer (the one who had the baby...wish it was mine), played by Wendel Meldrum.

I saw her in an episode of Bliss a few months ago, and it took me a while to recognize her since it's been a few years since I've watched the Wonder Years. She was still as sexy as ever though...especially in this episode. One of these days I'll grab the torrent...

As I sit back and think about this show and others around that time... I can definitely say we had some quality Television back then -- stuff that you scheduled your lives around watching. I can't say that any show does that for me now, hell I rarely watch TV. The content is so over dramatic these days, and "souped up" that it's not even realistic anymore. There's no feeling in TV now, it's just a hollow shell of its former self. Pretty sad, but oh well!

IAWTP!!! x 1,000,000

The Wonder Years was the last truly great show to grace television. I watched it religiously every week. I remember probably every episode even though I've seen most of them just once. Such a good show!! Why the hell isn't this out on DVD? This is one series I would actually buy!!

God, please don't start this in this topic. There was a lot of shit television back then too; you just don't remember it because, well, you likely skipped over it for the shit you liked

Actually he may be on to something - think reality TV.

By the way here's how it ended:

In the last show, the narrator tells us that Paul went on to study law at Harvard, that Karen has her baby and that he looks like Kevin, that Norma goes on to become a board chairman and that Wayne takes over the family furniture business after Jack passes away two years later. Kevin and Winnie write to each other every week for the eight years after she leaves for France to study art history. When she returns, Kevin is married and has a son. Kevin realizes that nothing turns out how you plan, but that his memories of childhood will be with him forever.

Reading that gives me goosebumps.

Which a decade ago was "sitcoms", which the decade before was "cheesey action/primetime soaps", which the decade before was "cheesey ass comic-based shows". Granted I hate reality TV more then the aforementioned categories combined, but every generation of TV (and all forms of entertainment for that matter) has it's groups of lemons. As long as you can get what you feel are a few gems admist the muck, it's all good.

That said, Wonder Years was defintely one of best shows I've ever seen...probably right behind Batman TAS, Early Edition and The Cosby Show for me.

I agree completely, but I'm talking about the fact that TV as a whole was better in the past than today.

I would have said that a few years ago, but now I watch and love with a much more critical mind:

Curb Your Enthusiasm
24
Lost
Alias
Scrubs
Arrested Development
The Daily Show

I don't think the past compares, if I could possibly speak objectively.

Yeah, there's a lot that I appreciate about the show now that I couldn't have at the age of ten. Such as the narrator mocking Kevin's perspective on things.

In my opinion, the overall quality of human beings has gone down condiderably so the quality of television has followed, it's only logical. But that doesn't just apply to television of course. I definitely think the OVERALL, (with overall being the keyword) quality of TV is much worse that it was 10-15 years ago. Reality TV is the worst genre of television ever conceived, and it thrives because people regularly watch it...(Or maybe it's because its been shoved down ourr throats and we have no choice or selection? Hmm, who knows..) What does that say about today's society? I'd rather infomercial anyday.

This is one of those shows that everyone seemed to have watched excect me, aside from maybe a few episodes throughout my life. Am I evil?

Sure, some TV programming is really dumb, but the existence of a show like The Wire tells me that there's also a distinct increase in intelligent programming compared to the past. Unless you're only talking about network television, in which case it might be a tougher sell, but I think between network and cable channels there's a lot of crap and a good amount of high quality stuff too.

Wonder Years was great but come on... after you figure out the moral lesson from watching the first 5 minutes of the show, it kinda wears on you too. I just grew out of it and became too preachy for my tastes.

The show is rarely about "morals", though.

Remember the episode where Wayne goes out with Carla Gugino, and then she cheats on Wayne with Kevin?

God The Wonder Years rocks.

moral lesson = preachy narrative at the end of each episode.
Either you've only watched a handful of episodes and you have a skewed perspective on the show or you need to consider what "moral" actually means. For one, in order for there to be a "moral lesson", there would have to be moments of immorality which never really took place. I'm telling you, the uplifting narratives at the end rarely had anything to do with morality. It was mostly about growing up. The show's basic premise is one of change. Each particular episode has this in some form, whether its Kevin letting go of a childhood remnant (the forest), his sister being a confused hippie, Paul changing and Kevin having to accept that, or Winnie and Kevin becoming friends after a break-up.

And it goes without saying, relationships were always at the heart. Some episodes solely dealed with the complexities of Kevin with his father, mother, or brother. Nothing about morals. Simply the true nature of family. I empathized with so much of it, which made the show even more powerful sometimes.

And no, it wasn't preachy either. I think you're trying to say that the narrator's intention is to pull at your heartstrings and stuff. Well, yeah. It's a family show and has a particular structure. I never minded it. Especially since it was often very well executed, though sometimes cheesy (the dental hygeinist episode - she was hot, but blah).

When I said moral lesson I didn't mean just moral. I was thinking "moral lesson" in loose terms meaning "the lesson it's trying to say", "the message it's trying to express", or "the lesson learned on each episode". ie. pick an arbitrary episode of Seinfeld and suppose the "moral lesson" is that... shit happens. It doesn't have to be "moral", just talking about the general message of the episodes it's trying to show. And no I don't think the show is immoral at all. But my mistake, I shouldn't have called it moral lesson but JUST lesson/message.

And I did liked Wonder Years a lot, at the time, but when you yourself experience what life really is about and how complex it is, you really grow tired of and out of the show itself. Let's just say that you don't enjoy it as much anymore since you know better. Things sometimes aren't as simple as it is but yes, it's just a TV Show but I think it does try to be much more than just that.

Though it does have its moments and still a good show but far from the greatest IMO.

Well... no. I still think it's very relevant, even though it always puts a happy face on things by the end of each episode.

Just want to clarrify that I'm not saying that "you" as in you, just in general. It's an entertaining show I agree but hasn't really aged well IMO... at least the narratives but maybe not the relevance.

And no I didn't know about Winnie and Kevin not ending up together. All that drama for nothing. I hate it even more now.
