14. Turks

You call it "Mad Men." They call it Tuesday morning.

Given that their homeland straddles two continents, it should be no surprise that Turkish people have a fairly cool outlook on life, embracing a diverse range of cultures, cuisines and plumbing standards.
Bathroom fittings aside, the Turks display their rich heritage with casual pride -- nowhere more so than in the shabby but breathtakingly beautiful city of Istanbul, home to one of the liveliest nightlife scenes either side of the Bosphorus.

Icon of cool: Mahir Cagri. One of the Internet’s first global celebs, Cagri’s broken English overtures to women (particularly his catchphrase “I kiss you”) is believed to have inspired Borat.

Not so cool: The Turkish passion for mustaches gets up some people’s noses.

13. Belgians

Yep, you read that right: Belgians.
OK, so it's small, damp and has a grim rep as a haven for European Union bureaucrats and sex offenders. But a nation that has made art forms of beer, chocolate and, yes, finch warbling can't be all bad.

In the past three years, Belgium has been hit by a political crisis that has left it without a government for months on end. In most countries, that would trigger anarchy, looting and offshore piracy. Belgians, however, have nonchalantly been getting on with it.

Cool icon: Herman Van Rompuy. Gray hair, gray suit, but great name. The former prime minister-turned E.U. president also has a nifty sideline in poetry, hence the nickname, "Haiku Herman."

Not so cool: No matter how you look at it, it's still Belgium.

12. Nepalese

Like all pimps and players, you’ve never seen a Nepalese in a hurry to get anywhere. Yet from this mellow-gold group have also come the feared Nepalese Ghurkas, among the toughest fighting men in the world, and Sherpas, who you might know as semi-outdoorsy types.
Icon of cool: Tenzing Norgay. Reached summit of Mt. Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary, but casually stepped aside and let his hiking buddy hog all the credit.

Not so cool: Draconian government regs and local ne’er-do-wells turn off a fair amount of travelers.

11. Australians

Any nationality so lazy it finds the need to abbreviate or shorten any word possible is definitely cool. Your mates Darren, Sharon and Barry become Daz, Shaz and Baz.

The emphasis on brevity allows more time for breathing and drinking. After all, it is pretty hot most of the time.

Add to that beaches, barbecues and bikinis -- yes they’re stereotypes, but for good reason -- and Aussies lead one very cool existence. They have their own fauna, flora and “holier than thou” small-person syndrome that inspires them to take on anyone in sport, and more often that not, beat them. Cool? Fair bloddy dinkum’! So cool are they, Australia is more than happy to keep Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. Work that out.

Icon of cool: The frosted, cold beer stubby.

Not so cool: The warm stubby. And the gold bit of the Green and Gold -- the Wallaby jersey and the Australia’s national one-day team’s World Cup outfit are downright embarrassing. The accent can be pretty cringe-worthy, too, depending on whom you ask.

10. Chinese

Not the most obvious choice, but with a population of more than one billion, statistically China must have its fair share of cool people. Besides, it's prudent to include the Chinese in any list like this because, if we didn't, China's resourceful hackers would simply crack into the site and add themselves anyway.
Not to mention, they’ve coolly managed to accumulate most of the world’s hard currency.

Icon of cool: Brother Sharp -- a homeless man whose rugged good looks unwittingly made him an Internet fashion sensation.

Not so cool: Concept of personal privacy still largely unknown in the Middle Kingdom.

9. Botswana

With a tax-evading Wesley Snipes and a vacationing Angelina Jolie entourage always a risk in Namibia, it falls to neighboring Botswana to pick up the regional cool crown.
So chilled it's a wonder the Kalahari desert doesn't frost over, the Batswana -- as they prefer to be known -- cut their own groove, particularly when riffing home-grown gumba-gumba jazz or laid-back hip hop.

Even the animals are relaxed in Botswana. Home to Africa's largest elephant population, the country chooses not to fence in its wild beasts like some other safari nations.

Icon of cool: Mpule Kwelagobe. Crowned Miss Universe in 1999, Kwelagobe actually made good on those "I want to make the world a better place" pledges, campaigning relentlessly for HIV/AIDS awareness.

Not so cool: One of the worst HIV/AIDS infection rates in the world.

8. Japanese

We're clearly not talking about identically suited salarymen who obliterate the humiliation of their day jobs with drunken karaoke impersonations of Elvis at his sweaty best.
Japan's torch of cool is defiantly held aloft by its shock-haired adolescents whose capricious embrace and manipulation of the freakiest aspects of modern consumerism, fashion and technology frequently dictate what the rest of the world will be wearing (we mean you, Lady Gaga) and doing with its thumbs.

Icon of cool: Former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi may have been the coolest-looking world leader ever, but former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama is our choice for leading man. Forget teenagers, this man knows style, particularly when it comes to shirts.

Not so cool: Japan’s legacy of mass conformity and ageing population. The future is very gray.

7. Spanish

Before everyone realized a couple of years ago that all that money wasn't real, most of northern Europe was flocking to Spain to spend it on vacation homes.
Why? Because sun, sea, sand, siestas and sangria aside, Spain is cool -- and so are the Spanish, who don’t even start the party until most other nations have gone to bed.

It's a shame everyone had to go home.

Icon of cool: Javier Bardem. Antonio Banderas 2.0 bagged Penelope Cruz.

Not so cool: We still haven’t forgotten the Spanish Olympic basketball team’s slant-eyed “tribute” to China in 2008.

6. Koreans

Ever ready to drink all comers under the table with never-ending rounds of soju-whiskey bombs -- it’s a personal affront in Seoul if you don’t throw down “one shot!” on the spot -- Koreans may be the best drinking buddies in the world. As reigning leaders of nearly all current Asian pop culture trends -- in music, fashion, film, Koreans dominate -- they’ve earned the right to brag a little when that “one shot!” turns into ten or twenty.

Icon of cool: Park Chan-wook. The film director’s twisted visions freak out fellow countrymen, but have achieved cult status among emo film majors worldwide.

Not so cool: Kimchi breath.

5. Americans

What? Americans? War-starting, planet-polluting, over-consuming, arms-bearing Americans? Surely we can't be suggesting that the people who voted George W. Bush into the White House (twice!) are cool?
Yes we are because, like it or not, we must.

The evidence is legion. Global politics aside, the world has done rather well out of Americans. Where would the hipsters of today be without rock and roll, classic Hollywood films, great American novels, tail fins, blue jeans, jazz, hip hop, “The Sopranos,” 360-degree slam dunks and that ultimate embodiment of cool -- surfing?

OK, someone else might eventually have come up with the same ideas, but the point is they didn't and America did.

Icon of cool: Johnny Depp. So cool he left the country, went to Europe, moved in with a French model and tried to become Keith Richards.

Not so cool: Pre-emptive military strikes, random invasions, rapacious consumerism, pathetic math scores and Walmart fatties would also place Americans high on any “most uncool” list.

4. Mongolians

Along with a carefully crafted air of quiet mystery, these unflappable souls pretty much perfected the freewheeling, nomadic cowboy existence, throat singing and yurts. Fur-lined everything -- boots, coats, hats, undies -- adds hearty splendor to the historic mystique. And who else keeps eagles as pets?
Icons of cool: Actress Khulan Chuluun, who played Ghengis Khan's wife in the very cool film, “Mongol,” and matched the arch badass arrow for arrow, barb for barb.

Not so cool: Yak-based dairy products … at every meal.

3. Jamaicans

There's more to Jamaicans than reggae, including Rastafarian (the most kick-back religion ever invented), an accent that’s the envy of the English-speaking world and the planet’s most distinctive and recognizable hairstyle. Note to backpackers: dreadlocks only cool on actual Jamaicans.
Icon of cool: Jimmy Cliff. The “Harder They Come" singer is still bringing it at 62.

Not so cool: High murder rate and widespread homophobia.

2. Singaporeans

Finally, something worth Tweeting about, la?

Think about it: in this digital age where blogging and updating Facebook are pretty much all that anyone does anymore, old school notions of cool have been rebooted. No longer the laughingstock, geeks are now inheriting the Earth.
With its absurdly computer-literate population, Singapore is geek central and its people can therefore claim their rightful place as avatars of modern cool. They’re probably all Tweeting about it right now.

Disagree with Singapore at number two? This might change your mind.

Icon of cool: Lim Ding Wen. This child prodigy could program in six computer languages at age nine. A glorious future awaits.

Not so cool: With everyone stuck at their computers, the local government actually has to encourage Singaporeans to have sex.

1. Brazilians

Without Brazilians we wouldn't have samba and Rio carnival; we wouldn't have the soccer beauty of Pele and Ronaldo; we wouldn't have the minuscule swimwear and toned bodies of Copacabana beach; and we wouldn't have certain eye-watering procedures performed with wax.
Unless they're using their sexy, laid-back, party-loving reputation as a cover for exterminating dolphins or invading Poland, then we have no choice but to name Brazilians as the coolest people on the planet.

So, if you're Brazilian and reading this, congratulations -- although, since you're sitting at a computer instead of showing off your six-pack on the shoreline, you probably aren't that cool yourself.

Icon of cool: Seu Jorge. The favela-raised performer's soulful Portuguese-language Bowie covers make you wish Ziggy Stardust was from Brazil, not space.

Not so cool: Mmmmm, Brazilian meat and cocoa -- so delicious, but farming's destruction of vast tracts of rainforest leaves a bitter aftertaste.

I'm from Australia, and while a lot of what they said is true, Australians can also be racist arseholes so I don't know how "cool" we really are.

Also, why no Canadians? They seem like very cool people from my interactions.

Coolest nations yet the list uses the nationality form of the word and talks about people? So shouldn't it be Coolest Nationalities?

LOL. He has the charisma of a damp rag and the appearance of a low grade bank clerk.

I didn't click on the link, but was this list constructed by a bunch of different writers? Its idea of cool seems various and conflicting. But good on 'em for not placing America in the top 3.

Worst List Ever.
Too bad they did not put my country as #1 so i would look less biased when calling it.

You posted this because Australia is on it, didn't you?

I have to admit, Koizumi did have some badass hair. And he had rock music in his commercials. But I did not agree with his politics!

maybe :p

But the reasons were pretty bad. No one wants to be known as the "lazy nation", especially when we work some of the longest hours.

Why would Canada be on the list?

They're the lame younger brother constantly trying to riff the style of their cool older brother. And when they do go on their own path they come up with milk in bags.

Bagged milk is awesome.

Also if you live in Vancouver *cough* you are doing many times more cool shit than most of America.

I lold at them using 'la' in the 'Finally, something worth Tweeting about, la?'. My uni course was full of Singaporeans and Malaysians that would use 'la' after every sentence. Always made me laugh tho.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.

He's the epitome of a boring politician. The only reason he's now President of the European Council is because he's safe and harmless.

Lol reading these qoutes about Australians is so hilarious. The way that other countries seem to view Australians is nowhere near the truth. In fact Australians in general still stick to that old saying about us being laidback and all that but it isn't true at all.

Why isn't USA on this list? Kinda ridiculous since nearly all of our movies and pop culture are seen across the entire world.

Of all the known Belgian people they could choose, they decided on Herman Van Rompuy? Also no mention of french fries? :|

This article is pretty stupidly written all in all...

Has problems recognising girls
maybe :p

Some people tend to confuse the distinction between laziness and the general populace having a laid back attitude.
