Based on sale, Nintendo can pack themselves on the back for coming out of 2020 dominating out of the big 3.

Switch 2 or Pro (which ever is the ones that will refresh the current hardwares) will likely come out during a time where the big PS5 and Xbox title will arrive, So alongside software, the hardware is going to have to be something good to keep up.

We've heard tidbit on what they may be doing to make sure of that (4k, OLED display, dock only console etc)

But what could Nintendo, being Nintendo..... do to screw this up?

Going Cardless? emphasis on Cloud gaming?

What could go wrong?

anyway, I don't really care about OLED as my switch has been undocked exactly four times since launch day.

I just want Mario Kart in 4K/60fps 🤷‍♂️

"Something good" rules out cloud by definition.

This is Nintendo, they will never do this. It requires infrastructure, and they don't want to invest in this. They want to sell you hardware, cartridges and digital games. A shit service with roms as well, but having powerful machines stacked somewhere to deliver high-end graphics from the network ? Yeah no, this is Nintendo.

Worst case scenario is just an overclocked Tegra X1 with a different screen so that some games might run at 900p instead of 720p docked.

DLSS would be the ideal solution for Switch and from my understanding would be pretty cheap to implement but despite all the rumors I still don't buy Nintendo going the extra mile for this revision.
 
Nintendo needs to forget gimmicks and innovation this time round. Power is the word on everybody's lips this gen due to XSX & PS5 and nothing less than a supercharged Switch will do. We need to see games that look and perform on par with the better offerings of the PS4 Pro and One X (at either 1080/1440p). 4k isn't going to happen on what will be primarily a hand held.

I would argue it is already gone wrong - and I say this as someone that loves Nintendo's games, and have a Wii(for cube), WiiU and Switch plugged in to use in our house. The WiiU's early problems weren't so much a lack of confidence in Nintendo producing new great TV games, eventually, and I would argue that the best first party games to appear on Switch are all WiiU ports at a design level that helped in the Switch get a better reception than the WiiU.

IMHO the Switch's main success has been to ride the tail of the Miyamoto-san era of software development and to appeal to a 3DS audience with a non-switchable Switch model that offered a large catalogue of games with the vast majority being digital only indie, or old console emu/ports/remaster offerings.

I believe the Switch is no longer a home console, but a hand held that has a version that can dock and provide a WiiU hardware level experience on a TV. A Switchable Pro model can neither keep pace with current last gen consoles (PS4/X1) and remain portable, so a Pro is actually either got to be a home console, or a Lite Pro, but not both - and even if DLSS could fake that, the first party software offering is world's away from the N64/Cube's high point of Miyamoto/iwata-san, etcs home console game output and the third party AA/AAA game support.

My assessment is that the Switch has been a major financial success for Nintendo, but at the cost of them leaving the home console market, and if a Switch Pro doesn't follow the handheld success of the Switch lite then the barren home console game offering by Nintendo's current teams will be a repeat of the WiiU following the Wii/3DS - only that every meaningful remaster has been used already on previous systems, and now they won't even have that option to fill a sparse release schedule.

We're talking about a 1.5 teraflops system with DLSS which should be more than enough for Switch to remain relevant for the next 4 years which is what Nintendo claimed to want for the ecosystem. Again it remains to be seen if they'll go all out like that but it's definitely in the realm of possibilities.
 
Why hold onto to physical in an age of massive and plentiful updates? People have to come to grips with not being able to keep games forever.
I don't own any switch carts.

The faking of that scenario would be a closer comparison between the Vita and PS3. You can't put a fully functional PS4 - no shortcuts with reduced mobile cpu and graphics precision, etc - in that form factor and still get good battery life. Or at least not within a price point that you can sell to a 3DS/Switch lite consumer market. It would be an amazing feat if they could achieve that, as someone buying from expensive Nvidia - versus Sony doing it themselves in the Vita days.

A Switch 2 yes, a Switch "Pro" no.
Switch Pro games have to run on the base Switch limiting the scope of what you can do on the Pro.

Or you can make games Switch Pro only, like DSi or New 3DS games, but at that point, you simply release a backward compatible Switch 2.

But it wouldn't be "an amazing feat". You've got Nvidia mobile chips like Orin that can approximate a base PS4 computational power in a handheld form factor. Add DLSS on top of that and you'd have a system that can run games at 4K/60fps, with of course some concessions made in terms of architecture and number of polygons pushed. Basically a modern console.

What hardware from nvidia or anyone can do 1.5tf as a portable, and for $399?

As someone who has only "docked" my Switch exactly four times, an OLED screen would be a neat feature.
 
OLED would be awesome. I might consider one. I've sometimes been thinking about a Switch but def gonna wait for Pro announcement.

OLED was awesome on Vita, though sadly not a lot of native resolution content was released. Its also awesome on my Galaxy Tab in native 1440p.

SONY and MS would kill to have Switch sales.

As I said, Orin. And of course when I say as a portable I mean while maintaining the form factor. This level of performance would be in docked mode, in portable you'd have to significantly lower the performance to save battery life. Even if you think Orin is unrealistic (and it is, I'm just talking about the absolute best case scenario here) a Xavier based SoC would provide a significant performance boost compared to the current architecture.

Of course I'm not saying any of that will happen just that it's possible in theory.
 
The only cloud gaming I want on the Switch is XCloud or PS Now. Even then, it would need to be when I am near a network which only happens at home and work. I don't see Nintendo dropping cards yet, just like I didn't see Sony and Microsoft completely cutting out discs this generation. It will happen eventually, but not yet.
 
I hate to be the guy who says it, but 50GB+ Carts just aren't happening. The next Switch (Or Pro), will be either Digital Only, or they use UMD-Style discs.

There is no realistic option right now for larger Carts, due to the costs.

I would think it would at least be as powerful as the ps4 especially if it comes out next year or the year after. It would be nearly 9 years next year and 10 by 2023 since the launch of the ps4 so why couldn't a handheld be as powerful as a last gen console. I wouldn't be mad at that considering how pretty some of Sony's games has been during the ps4 era.

I could see 32gb carts being the new normal, and subsidized 64gb carts for some of the high end games.
 
I'm not certain yet Nintendo will even bother to release a mid-gen upgrade given how well the Switch is selling. In the middle of COVID uncertainty, they may decide to leave well enough alone and focus on their next-gen device in 2023.

With Nintendo it's possible lol. I think that could be the worst possible direction for me aka not releasing anything at all.
