[TheGamingBritShow] The Silent Hill 4 Analysis

Damn... In the time it would take to watch that video I could beat the game.

Silent Hill 4 is the only other release in the franchise that is on par with the first installment in my book. Third installment is complete sequel schlock and the second is trying way too hard to channel Lynch with shocking visual metaphors but without making a lick of sense. The fourth has a unique story to tell and it nails the execution with the exception of the infamous water prison puzzle.

Highly recommend people look up the SH Wiki moderator circumcision controversy that came from this game.

More entertaining than the game itself.

4th is my favorite beside 3rd.
I like most of SH, but the 4th have special place IMO
I think it's time I will need to replay the 4th : )

I bet bloober will remake 1-3 but not this ☹️
Game is awful. Interesting idea but bad execution. Furthermore it's really too long. The second half of the game we are forced to revisit the all previouses areas; when I realized it, I have to give up and stopped my gameplay session.

The second part of the game is when shit really hits the fan and you are just trying to keep Eileen safe by minimizing travel. The first half of the game is like a stroll in the park compared to the second and the finale is the best climax in Silent Hill franchise.

Half of the game is to recomplete recycled areas, no thanks horrible cheap trick. The only idea to go through the same places again destroy my interest to go on. I want new places to explore not the same shit again.

The point is you see the reverberating effect Walter Sullivan has had on the areas you were previously in before facing him. Going through the areas is greatly expedited the second time around.

P.S. Most of the nightmare areas of every Silent Hill are recycled.

But the recycled areas in the previouses Silent Hill wasn't exactly recycled. In the nightmare dimension things are more scaring and the areas are quite changed. In Silent Hill 4 you can see it's just a cheap trick to save the development time.

But the execution was a league ahead. In the nightmare dimension the areas are scaring and quite different. In Silent Hill 4 they are barely changed and not even to rexplore.
By the second time around the protagonist is familiar with the areas and that plays into the narrative and his goal of not letting more people die due to Walter Sullivan.

P.S. The first Silent Hill had the protagonist return to the hospital to gain insights as well.

Silent Hill 1 is more "opened" and revisiting the same area find some logic plus the nightmare dimension adds tension and variety. In Silent Hill 4 everything is more linear and you perceive immediately they just recycled half of the game to put less work to end it. It's quite evident and not funny to experience from my gamer perspective.

For me, of the first 4 games, its probably 1,2,4,3. I think 4 had that disturbing dark story and some amazing music and atmosphere, held back by some game design and gameplay elements.

I do enjoy some lore videos on games I'm invested in, but I don't know if nearly 4 hours is doable. Has anyone watched it? Any reviews?

The game had some good parts but it was ultimately a poor Silent Hill game...

As a horror game, it is quite creepy and atmospheric. I particularly liked the sound design and the sections of the game where the safe room becomes 'unsafe'. That was a nice idea and executed well. The actual saving grace is that it is genuinely quite a creepy experience with a very dark plot. I particularly enjoyed the floating ghosts and focus on isolation.

The game unfortunately falls apart in just about every other aspect though. Puzzles and gameplay were pretty trash, story sucked, graphics were quite poor even for the time.

The initial concept/setup was very interesting, and I think it's still very relevant. It could even be revisited in the future, set in modern Japan too.

😂😂😂.

It's like comparing the movie Alien 1, which is an original film, with suspense and terror, with the movie Alien Resurrection, which is more of an unintentional comedy film.

I tried to slog through silent hill 4 (8 hours) but its sadly the worse one. The room area is really cool but the enemy designs and areas are mid, also the story just has no emotional weight. I dont think the music has any bangers either.

Silent Hill the The Room had it flaws but god damn it was legit one of the scariest SH game.
It felt scary in the first 3 levels, then the levels got progressively more boring and the backtracking through each level just destroyed any buildup the game made. In the end they made the game "scary" by adding unkillable or not enough items to kill every enemy types.

The last canon entry to me. The funny thing is I hated at its time, but I apreciate it far more nowadays. Partially because some things being clearly lost in western entries (including the remake), but also because I enjoyed it in my second playthrough two years ago. I was more into its atmosphere and its ideas...and well...I was enough cautious to keep my companion unarmed (faaar less frustrating). I won't deny it's a very flawed game, it's still my least favourite japanese Silent Hill game. And it's understandable not liking it. I could consider it like a rough diamond. But sometimes a rough diamond is far more interesting than a polished rock.

Cradel of Forest FTW.

I wanted to laugh at the rooms with the giant head of that one character.
I actually thought that was the one good scare in the whole thing do the randomized nature of it. I mean it's a simple jump scare but considering how dire the rest of the game was it basically high art in comparison.

Yes, the wheelchairs doing cute little spin moves, burping nurses, and Sullivan's shitty fan fiction ass were so frightening.
If you take into account that in the forest scene Walter Sullivan's is chasing you with a saw and hitting Bumblebees while Eileen shoots them with an Uzi... The scene is just as delirious or more so.

The worst game in the series.

So you are saying that Homecoming is better?

No. Having just rewatched Alien (which was mid like SH2) I would find Silent Hill 4 more comparable to Covenant (dark but satisfying) while the original is closer to Prometheus (even better). Downpour would be comparable to Resurrection, Homecoming would be comparable to Romulus, and the threes of each franchise would line up. None of them are on the level of Aliens.

That is how I view every invincible enemy in horror games with the sole exception of the Hunter from Dead Space. That bastard gets all his limbs and head blown off only to get back up intact and attempt to berserker barrage my ass.
