There is no value in the cutting edge

You always just need to find something to play that you're interested in. I play a lot of new games. I just bought Vampire Crawlers on release because I know it's something I'll enjoy after playing the demo and Vampire Survivors. But I also play tons of stuff from my backlog and retro games. Hell, I've spent over 200 hours playing Final Fantasy XI since January.

Play games because they're fun, not because they're pretty to look at. Your time on Earth is limited.

There is no value in living in the cutting edge of this hobby. In fact, if you stick around long enough, mostly everything is free. So why do we care about day one sales, day one reviews? What's the point?
Thats soyboy bluesky point of view, if u wanna be casual gamer its ur call and choice obviously, but we here are hc gamers who are hyped af for games(not all obviously, but plenty of them) and we will compromise basically with all other things to make time/money for our hobby :)

If game is of high quality and im hyped for it like a motherfucker, u best belive im gonna buy it at launch, same with hardware, will other parts of my life suffer- likely, but thats fine, spent well over 1,5k usd on gaming this year and yeh, my dating budget is non existent at least till end of may, but so be it :D

I don't buy every AAA game out there for sure but the ones I know I'm gonna love I buy day one because I want them to keep making these games (that's the part people forget...if we all wait for a sale then they'll stop making them) and I've been most likely waiting for it for a while.

With so many people not willing to pay a fair price for games it's no wonder the industry is in such a mess and has publishers chasing GAAS models and filling games with microtransactions.

Pay for your games.
Fair Price ? $70 for broken games that rehash the same shit yearly or $40 for some live service slop they then shut down the servers in less than a year. Fuck most modern games

Maybe if games don't release in the broken, unfinished and unoptimised state they usually do these days. You can't blame people these days for being willing to wait 6 months to a year to buy the games
with the hopes it will be in a functional state.

Don't pay for broken and unfinished games,

If theres a game Im excited to play... I pretty much always buy it day one.

Dunno. Im excited to play it, and yeah. Glad its available. So I buy it.

I do it for games I know what to expect from them. Sure, I can save some money by waiting a few months but with these long development cycles it means basically waiting an extra year. I work to support my hobby so...

Most games I can wait for a bundle or a sale or whatever. For example, don't plan to pay more than $20 for RE9.

Last game I bought day 1 was BF6 after playing the beta. I didn't regret it. I'll buy Wolverine for PS5 on day one two but I already know what I'm getting. Either they do it right or not but so far I've enjoyed what Insomniac does.

Funnily enough, that's the same line I use to explain why I left social media, seldom watch TV/youtube, and have drastically reduced my gaming time. OP's revelation strikes at the weak point of blind consumerism. Games don't suddenly expire because they get old, phones last way more than two years, and cars can run forever with minimal maintenance. Corpo marketing culture has done everything possible to breed contentment out of our lives.

If I can and I want to play a game, why wouldn't I play it as soon as I can? Tomorrow I might be dead.

Life is fragile. I might be fine now, but in a couple of minutes I might be dead for whatever reason. So...

The only reason at all I buy something day 1 for me is if from a developer with a great track record for a game/genre I'm dying to play and the game holds up in reviews. If FromSoftware or Larian releases something, I'll likely buy it day one. I'll also play day 1 releases if they are on gamepass because there is no downside. Otherwise, for the most part I refuse to buy most games on release anymore when they almost always require tons of updates/patches. Just makes sense to wait, buy it a few months later once all the bugs are ironed out. You get a cheaper version but get a better game. Or even better, a year or two later and get the game and all its DLC, getting a cheaper better game that is now actually complete. I could game for the next few years and not run out of stuff to play on my steam and playstation backlogs so I am in little hurry to buy.

Maybe there's a reason why it's more of a thing in the past for you. I enjoyed it a lot as a kid too.
I had my kid at 45, I enjoyed the early PS5 hype cycle a lot, PC hype the last thirty years. In the eighties it was mostly getting my most recent issue of Nintendo Power and renting the game at the video store. But you're probably much older and wiser than me so please, enlighten me.

This is the #1 most correct answer. Wait and get a fully patched, fully functional, cheaper game.
For what it's worth. games are super cheap these days. 1 hour of professional boxing training costs more than 200h long game.

I tend to be Day 1 with Nintendo, and legacy franchises that I enjoy: Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Metal Gear, etc.

But Nintendo's "vAriAbUL pRisINg" is starting to change my habits.
