sOny MDR-700's

They sound awesome.

However, the circular shape hurts the cartilage in my hears after extended wear DJ-ing or playing QuakeIII. Every thirty or so minutes I have to take a break from them. I’m not looking to replace them right now, but eventually I'll want something more comfortable.

The MDR-700s are not so hot in my book, or in the book of many trance djs.

To summarize the thread:

1) The MDR-V700s have incredibly poor build quality and will crack and break along the hinges.
2) The MDR-V700s do not sound all that great compared with similarly priced headphones from Pioneer, Sennheiser, etc. Nor do they even compare favorably with other Sony headphones released in Europe.
3) The MDR-V700s cups are too small for most ears and are thus quite uncomfortable.

The main reason you will see many top djs using 700s is because they are easy to find and buy. Most major electronics retailers will carry them, as opposed to finding a nicer headphone like the Pioneer HDJ-1000 or the Technics 1200 headphones.

Id recommend the Pioneers (which have their own build quality issues, namely a loose connection between cups that can occasionally come apart and cause a loss of sound, but not nearly as bad as the sonys) because the sound is much richer, the heaphones are much more comfortable, the cable assembly is user servicable, and they have a stereo/mono switch for one ear monitoring. I have had the Pios for 1 year and not had a single problem. A guy on tranceaddict had to service 4 pairs in 3 months once.

My friend (who is a DJ/producer currently ranked #9 in Japan on Loud Magazines (like JPN DJ Mag) list) swears by the Technics because their loud bass response makes mixing hard dance music (techno, uk hard house, hard trance) much more fun. Pretty comfy too.

Other well respected cans include the Euro sonys in the tranceaddict link, as well as the Sennheiser MD25s, etc.

My advice, sell/ditch the 700s. Buy nicer headphones.

They're the best I've had so far, and I bought them at BestBuy as an open box item that someone else returned....all for $65.oo

I like what I spent, and it was just dumb luck to see it discounted. I also like the bag that came with them. My digital camera now resides in it. I've spoken to several dj's, but only one connoisseur at this last party gave me the low down on which ones are more comfortable than my MDR-700's
