These Coloradans say Earth is flat. And gravity’s a hoax. Now, they’re being persecut

It's one thing to suggest that thousands (millions?) of people are lying to the population and have created this grand deception to force our brains to think a certain way.

If all it was was people "lying", then maybe....but in order for flat earth to be true, that would mean everything from math, to physics, to chemistry, to geology, to biology would have to be fake, too. Like, someone invented fake math and physics to perpetuate this lie.
Not just the sciences, but everything from aviation to transportation to travel agencies would also have to be in on it. Plus military, politicians, any industry reliant on satellite (TV, GPS, etc) , and the list goes on and on. Tens of millions would have to be in on it.

Don't have time to explain right now, but it is gravity. Earth has an atmosphere and, say, mars, doesn't because the density of earth is much higher than mars. So the gravitational force on particles is stronger (but also weak enough that lighter molecules like hydrogen and helium actually can escape to space).
As a person who believes in gravity, I accept this answer :p

The Globalists are extremely powerful, you know!

I just found about that the whole "Flat Earth" movement actually exists couple months ago because my coworker showed some of Kyrie Irving's posts. I must say it took me good 30 minutes to even try to grasp that there are people in 2017 who believe that Earth is flat.

Now, the big question is if Earth is on top of the Elephants, Dragons or a giant Turtle. I am going with the 4 Elephants on top of the Giant Turtle. Terry Pratchett would have been proud.

I wonder if any of this recent increase in flat earthers can be attributed to massive increase in the phrase "globalists" over the last few years. Hey if someone is dumb enough to believe the world is flat .. I could see it.

To be fair they are all under the command of the Jewish globe producing consortium that runs everything. It's all about those damn globes in classrooms. Wake up sheeple!

We need more crazy conspiracy theories to counter the Flat-Earth. Concave, bowl, football, chicken-winged, etc. Fuck.... Now I want a Chicken-Winged shaped Earth. It must be why Aliens keep coming to Earth. Our planet looks delicious!

They believe compasses point to the center. How would they accurately travel in a straight line? Baring the fact that if they had such a tool, they wouldn't test it anyway.
But you can observe for yourself that that's not how magnetic fields work with a compass and a couple of bar magnets. Christ.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.

Who makes the magnets?

Scientists.

The magnets only tell you what they want you to think.

The level of stupidity I have read online today is just mind boggling. My head hurts because I tried to process this shit. This is what happens when progress falters for just one Nano Second and here in the US progress will be halted for a minimum of 3 and a half years. I could only imagine how stupid people will get in that time frame.

I thought Mars' atmosphere was thin because the planet lacks an EM field to protect it from solar wind stripping it away. Or is it a little of column A and B?

It's both. Maybe using mars was a poor example for that reason.

If we didn't have the magnetic materials in the earth creating a EM field that deflects solar wind away from the planet, then yes, the atmosphere would be stripped away by that.

The effect of gravity stops the particles that make up our atmosphere from just wandering off on their own due to random motion.

If you somehow had a planet with the same size and magnetic field as earth but much less dense, you'd lose more of the lighter particles in the atmosphere than in earth

Which is why this one is so crazy to me. So many people in so many fields woudl have to be in on it, along with thousands of pieces of misc technology.

And for it to be true, flat earth requires all kinds of technology, mathematics, physics, etc, that just don't exist.

A friend of mine. Not a close one. Have gone over too this shit. Have tried many times trying to discuss this.

But serious its impossible to do that with a FE. They are so fucking stupid.

This is just ridiculous. I know there are things that are hard to believe in this world but believing that Earth is flat is something really special.

are flat earthers only in america? if so, i understand
A British women I worked with was a flat-earther. She was also a Seventh Day Adventist, not sure if there's a connection there.

We had a very civil discussion about her flat earth beliefs where I countered every argument she had.....she quit her job by phone the very next day.

Not sure if that was related.

Haha, not sure why this made me laugh as much as it did. It's amazing so many people can be so sensitive to having their beliefs challenged and refuted

When the word spread around the office that she'd quit my very first thought was "oh shit, I hope she didn't take my arguments home to her husband who then made her quit her job to avoid my heathen poison".

It's not like she handed in her notice and then worked her notice period, she literally called up the next morning and said she didn't want to work for the company anymore and wouldn't be coming back.

Joking aside, some of this stupidity could be countered it schools just taught basic physics as a requirement and just explained how gravity works. Even if it's just one mandatory super rudimentary physics class that every child had to take that explained common day occurrences and didn't go in depth just to explain to them why gravity and a star would cause a spherical world

Is gravity not covered in basic high school science in america or something?

Maybe they're onto something. Maybe all planets are flat and are trapped in a perpetual game of ultimate frisbee with the sun.

I dunno, maybe I'm trying too hard to dumb myself down to their level so I can understand what it's like to be so dumb.

Things like this aren't believed out of lack of education typically. 90 percent of the people are general conspiracy theorists or anti-intellectuals, so they will believe whatever is against "them." There's a reason this sort of stuff has risen to prominence in the wake of people like Trump.

I'm not seeing the problem here.
If they want to believe the world is flat, just let them, it isn't affecting my life in any way.
People believe all kinds of bullshit every day.

Let's say it's true and the earth is flat and gravity is hoax. What would be the point of the lies? I mean, it's not gonna change how I live my days.

"Hey, dude, the earth is flat"
"Ok..."

Yeah but stupidity and pseudo science are like a cancer that spreads. Sure you start with the crazies, but then you get one that's a bit sharper and realizes "hey let's try and use smart sounding words and phrases to try and legitimize ourselves". Then you get people in the middle, those that don't originally side with the crazies but are not really educated either that hear some "convincing science talk" and that shit spreads. The world, sadly, is mostly filled with these middle of the road people who can be coerced if something sounds educated even if it isn't. Look at the anti vaxers and how they started

wait, so if the earth is flat so is the moon and the sun etc?

According to the Flat Earth Wiki;
"The moon is a rotating sphere. It has a diameter of 32 miles and is located approximately 3000 miles above the surface of the earth."

And, the sun is the same size and distance.

EDIT: I should note, that with those dimensions, the sun and moon would appear bigger in the sky than they actually do. This is measurable thanks to good old angular diameter.

The idea is that you will change how you live your days. You are no longer an insignificant spec in the vastness of a cold ever-expanding universe. You can feel confident that you matter in an important play.

Suddenly, the earth is once again the center of the universe, its true origins unexplainable by physics, and the only conceivable answer as to how it originated would be with a creator diety. You can feel confident that the creator diety has placed you here for a reason and given you purpose.

This is the true nature of flat-earthers.

Jesus, this is so dumb but so fascinating. Why are the sun & moon spheres but the earth is not?! Fucking hell.

I think if people knew that gravity isn't a force pushing you down and instead is a contraction of space, then less idiots would believe in a flat earth. They argue that if gravity was real then we wouldn't be able to lift our arms because the same "force" holds buildings from escaping into space.

"Hur dur, it's just a theory."

Only good point I ever heard from a flat earther is why none of our commercial airplanes fly over Antarctica or near it and instead take the longer way on flights where doing that would make sense.

Can any aviation guys or anything explain to me why that is?

Thousands of years ago people knew the world was round. Being a flat-earther is just a cry for attention, if you actually believe if you're a moron. Simple as that.

one presumes safety, since, you know, crashing anywhere on the continent would be instant and certain death

(although it turns out there are flights to Antarctica: http://www.antarcticaflights.com.au/)

A quick Google search suggests it's a matter of safety and not actually typically saving that much in terms of distance travelled.

Aviation rules for flying over the Antarctic are apparently required to have special survival gear on board which would limit seats and require specialist training by staff on how to use it.

Unless you're specifically going to Antarctica, it's generally just not worth going over it.

A rule called ETOPS limits how far away from a runway a 2-engine passenger plane is allowed to fly, to account for emergency diversions. It used to only be 60 minutes, which is why all intercontinental trips were done in 3 or 4 engine planes. These days, it's up to 180 minutes (with extensions by special arrangement) which allows planes to fly pretty mucheverywhere.

RKthCqK.png

Except for Antarctica. It's just so remote.

Also, get a globe out (or Google Earth) and look at the South Pole. Now try and find two destinations a reasonable distance apart whose Great Circle flight would actually cross the pole. There aren't really any. The few that just about count are nowhere near big enough to warrant a 747 or A380 (the only 4-engine planes still in widespread use)

Finally, it's just a horrible place to make an emergency landing. High altitude = high landing speed and then everyone would freeze to death.

Saw a really good explanation of this recently (may have even been in this thread).

Because it's a wasteland. There's no radar, no towers, no communications in the area, and crashing there would just be the worst thing ever.

The expense of gas and time flying around it is worth it.

It's like if we are living in times when facts don't matter. Those scientists, dedicating their lives to discover shit for the good of the humanity. Does not matter to the stupid.

Have you really seen these "tens of millions"? Or maybe it's all just one big scam and you're falling for it.

It takes almost a year to make a baby, and the world is only 6000 years old. If you do the math, it's impossible for there to be millions of people
